The Pros And Cons Of Tuckman's Understanding Of Team Dynamics

This essay will discuss the main insights that Tuckman (1965) has brought to society for better understanding of team dynamics. He is a theorist who has done a detailed research based on team work. King, D and S.Lawley (2013:177) ‘Tuckman argued there are two key factors: interpersonal relationships and task orientation.’ Therefore it is worthwhile to examine these two aspects of his discovery because they shape group dynamics. Then I will deliberate the benefits and drawbacks of these two factors being used by other organisations. I will also discuss the pros and cons of Tuckman’s five stage performance model and Rickards and Moger’s (2000) reduced it to three stage model.

Often there is complex based on different working styles and personalities. Some members are frustrated with one another’s approach and distinctions. It is difficult to work with people who have different perspectives which is why this is a very challenging stage for team leaders.
The norming stage occurs when the team start what Tuckman calls King, D and S.Lawley (2013:178) ‘a’’patching-up’’ phase’(Tuckman 1965:392) and the ‘group norms and values emerge’. This is when team members resolve their distinctions built on their strong abilities and admire their leader. The author is trying to say that the people who work together are in the process of convening with one another.
Team members will achieve the performing stage when they are able to effectuate the team’s goal without friction. Leaders at this stage, can delegate more work and spent time developing each person to be able to perform at their best. Most teams go through each of these stages and leaders tend to speed the process up. That will help the members in the group get to the performance stage …show more content…
They try to facilitate management to an organisation. They argue that between each of those stages there is a certain barrier that acts like a wall, that needs to be broken in order for progress.
Tuckman’s model is more efficient than the one that Rickard and Moger have developed because it gives the members in the group a better opportunity to get to know each other and get used to each other's actions. It might be a more complicated way of managing groups and teams but it may result in better teamwork. The two writers argue that ‘Tuckman’s model is misplaced’. It is probably because by using his model there would be a high possibility of conflicts between the team members caused by moving from average to high performance straight away.

In conclusion, this essay has evaluated the five stages of group dynamics that Tuckman has researched. It is explained in detail how a leader needs to act towards the other members of a group in order for them to improve and be more successful.
If the structure of Tuckman’s model about managing groups and teams is used then there is a high possibility of forming a well performed business organisation. The stages are idealised and they do not impersonate what really happens in
