The Red Pill

The depiction of abuse in the Canadian legal system is quite broad, and can include many types of offences. These offences branch off depending on categories of action, such as whether the abuse is physical, sexual, or psychological, and the perpetrators of the abuse. One area of abuse is spousal abuse, which can also be grouped under the broader category of domestic abuse. In 2014, Statistics Canada reported that nearly equal proportions of men and women experienced spousal abuse during the preceding five years, with about 342,000 women and 418,000 men across the provinces (Statistics Canada, Trends). However, the narrative that is painted across the country is that women are the only victims, and that “female victims suffer more physically, …show more content…
In the film, Paul Elam, the founder of controversial website A Voice for Men, states that “[the red pill moment] is the day you decide nothing looks the same” (Jaye). Dean Esmay, a former staff member at the website, also explains that the red pill moment encourages people to “stop pretending women are oppressed and the males are the oppressors...it’s a hateful lie, and it’s wrong” (Jaye). Essentially, believing that narrative that women are the main group being silenced about issues such as spousal abuse is a way to keep people from the truth, which is much more complex. Examples of silencing can especially be seen in Toronto, with various protests including language such as “racist, sexist, anti-gay, MRAs, go away” (Jaye). The events depicted in the documentary were the Rally for Men and Boys in Crisis, and a speaker at UofT with talking points about men’s issues, with protestors at UofT even illegally pulled the fire alarm in order to …show more content…
One example that directly showcases this is that there are only government run support groups for female victims and male batterers, but not the other way around. This stems from the ideas depicted in the blue pill mentality, which states that men are always the oppressors and women are always oppressed. The idea that men are inherently violent is also attached to this, with the Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime citing “poor communication skills and lack of spirituality” (CRCVC 2). They also claim that the cycle of violence, involving the tension building, acute battering, and tranquil phases, is male-centric. An account that combats the idea that men are only irrationally violent comes from a Reddit thread, titled “Men of Reddit who were victims of domestic violence by a woman, what’s your story?”, in which user Unoitsso speaks about her husband’s ex-wife and says, “Her first attempt at his life, was over him eating a candy bar from her stash. She stabbed him with a screw driver and pushed him down the stairs” (Reddit). This irrational action is just one example that proves that anger is not only present in males. Another example of the inequalities men face is the lack of support for men in shelters run by the government, with 90% of them forbidding men and boys over the age of twelve. As of 2018, there

Procrastination Essay

...Procrastination – An essay on If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler written by Italo Calvino Perhaps this sentence would suit as the closing one. Well at least I have to consider it. Finally, ideas are starting to evolve now that I have sat myself down with my cup of coffee; Calvino thought drinking coffee was adequate for reading and writing, so I drink it while I do just that, read or write. The amount of procrastination this essay has received is not even measurable through the metric system; such large amounts are we talking about, well that is how my mind put it. I think the deadline was the 21st of December and today it’s the 14th of March, the accurate word for this instance would be insane. An understanding for how evil my procrastinating self can become has been stated. Let’s google procrastination, did you get the same hit as I did? “Procrastination refers to the act of replacing high-priority actions with tasks of lower priority” I could not possibly agree more. “To beat procrastination you have to win the performing-race against your procrastinating self”, well let’s start beating this procrastinating dude then, to begin with, what should I write about? Maybe I can use this procrastination situation in my essay, after all the first six pages in If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino are all about procrastination. Or should I write about how the novel is structured with every second chapter being a separate story and how that is entwined with the duality...

Philosophy

...Red Pill or Blue Pill They say that the most intelligent people in life are the unhappy people. Ernest Hemingway, Sylvia Plath, Vincent Van Gough some of the most famous people have committed suicide. When searching for truth and purpose within life one is subjecting themselves to a life of unhappiness. With every decision in one’s life one chooses whether to remain ignorant to their surroundings or to become knowledgeable to the absolute truth within life. I believe that it is in each individual’s best interest to remain “ignorant and happy”, but as the curious humans’ we cannot resist a chance to discover the absolute truth and meaning to life in general and in our own life. Through examining Platos , “Allegory of the Cave, the Matrix and other examples, it will be proven why I believe that it is in one’s best interest to remain ignorant, but as humans we have a need to discover truth and purpose within life. Plato's “Allegory of the Cave” is a scenario where 6 prisoners are chained to the ground. They are forced to stare at a wall where everyday shadows or people objects and creatures are projected onto the wall by the Sun. The prisoners believe that the shadows are real life until one day a prisoner gets a chance to leave the cave and see that everything he once thought was true was in fact false. The one prisoner tries to tell the rest of the prisoners about the truth but all they hear is echoes. If the prisoner must return back to the cave after seeing the real world...

The Matrix Comparison

...He is invited out by them and just as he begins to decline their invitation and the clients are about to leave, he notices a white rabbit tattoo on one of the women’s shoulders. The random whim that sprouts from his curiosity and desire for truth lead Neo to follow the instructions on his computer and go out with his clients. Throughout the film, Neo is tested and put into situations of uncertainty and spontaneity in which the answer lies in his choice in these unplanned circumstances. While in the club, Neo meets Trinity a woman who will change his entire world. He is later given the choice between a red pill and a blue pill. If “You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” (Matrix Film) His decision to take the red pill and continue on the unruly adventure despite the dangers shows courage and yearning for validity in life. Moreover, both the Science Fiction film The Matrix and the famous colorful children’s novel, Alice in Wonderland share congruent themes and expeditions. While Alice from Alice in Wonderland journeys throughout the land of Wonderland and Neo from The Matrix navigates through the Matrix, both protagonists are tested and exposed to a variety of circumstances and situations of different levels of uncertainties and ambivalence. Throughout these journeys both Alice and Neo uncover truths and certitudes from...

Matrix and the Cave

...Plato's prisoner comes to realize first that the shadows he is looking at are not the truth, they are just shadows cast on the wall by the people and animals. The characters, simultaneously experience shock and then a feeling of when they first perceive what is real. Neo (the name he assumes after the experience) is able to see how humans are "grown", hooked on wires, an element which symbolizes control just like the chains, which tie the prisoners in Plato's cave. Unlike Plato’s prisoner, who manages to find his way out of the cave without any help from others, Morpheus helps Neo. When Neo is faced with a moment of choice: would he take the blue pill and stay in the world of senses (Matrix) or take the red pill and start his “tumbling down the rabbit hole” and come to know reality as it objectively exists. He chooses the red pill thus giving himself the opportunity to experience the world of the mind, the real world and finds it as mind-blowing as Plato’s prisoner finds the illuminated world outside of the cave. There is no turning back after experiencing what is real. However, there is a need for both characters to share the truth with the others.  Just as Plato supposed his...

A Red Hot Chilli Peppers Use and Abuse

...Katie McConnell Mr. Groneman Profile October 10, 2013 A Red Hot Chili Peppers Use and Abuse Being one of the most famous rock stars in the world sounds like it would be all fun and games, right? For Anthony Kiedis it was a never ending roller coaster ride of fun, drugs, sex, fame, and also tragedy. Living the typical “rock star” lifestyle, Kiedis hit some of the highest and lowest points of his time. Many of those highs and lows involved Anthony being high, whether it be from marijuana, lsd, cocaine, heroin, or any other experimental drug he used. Struggling to keep himself together as he went on many unnecessary binges, Kiedis and his band the Red Hot Chili Peppers still managed to come out on top at the end of the rock n’ roll age of the twentieth century. If I were to paint a picture of Anthony’s personality, it would have to have many psychedelic characteristics, for he is very out-there compared to what is classified as normal. He is an artist with a completely original style, not only in his appearance but also in his song writing. In his prime time of the late 80’s into the early 90’s, he fits the description of a young, athletic body typed yet grungy looking California punk. Mo-hawks were styled, one tattoo turned into another, waves off the coast line were being surfed, and his overall attitude toward the world was rebellious with a “not giving a fuck” attitude. Kiedis simply did what he wanted, when he wanted, and ignored authority completely. Being...

Phil201/Matrix/Plato/Descartes/Libertyuniversity

...The Matrix, Plato, and Descartes Whether one elects for the “red pill of truth”, or the “blue pill of deception”, the battle for the human mind is being waged. Similarities between the motion picture, The Matrix, “The Allegory of the Cave” from Plato, the Republic, Book VII, 514A1-518D8, and Meditation 1 of The Things of Which We May Doubt, from Rene’s Descartes, Meditations on the First Philosophy 1641, include the existence of the opposing force that seeks to deceive the human (mind) soul, and hold the body captive by existing in a state of illusion. Each character confronts the enemy of deception and must choose what to do with the truth revealed to them. In contrast for some, the reality of the truth will prove to be too much. The knowledge of the truth can still be rejected and living the illusion of a lie can still be accepted. Neo was born enslaved in a pod, physically stored in liquid, and controlled by the artificial intelligence of computers and machines. Neo serves as an energy source and is fed artificial images that hold him in an induced dream state of a virtual reality. Like Neo, the prisoner of Plato’s cave, has been held in bondage since birth. The prisoner is bound with chains in a fixed position, given only the illusion of reality from dancing shadows on the walls from those outside the cave. The cave consists of people holding others captive to a physical existence and mental prison limited by their physical senses. Unlike Neo being bound by...

Comparing Reality In The Matrix And Alice In Wonderland

...To Alice, Wonderland is a dream, which is not real. Her real world is outside Wonderland. But in The Matrix, that is opposite. Neo discovers the truth from another character Morpheus, once Neo was disconnected from the Matrix: “You’ve been living in a dream world, Neo” (The Matrix, 1999). When Neo sees Morpheus for the first time in person, Morpheus makes Neo choose a blue pill, which would keep him in his “reality” inside the Matrix or a red pill to escape the Matrix and start a new life in a new “reality”. Neo picks the red pill and falls into another world. Morpheus tells Neo: “the world you live is the unreal world called Matrix, and we all controlled by an intelligence machine which is created by the early 21 century”. Neo finds out the world he lived before is fake and the real world is the one that he lives in outside of the Matrix. Reality for Neo is the world outside of the Matrix while the world he lived in before is his imagination and does not exist. We can conclude that both Alice’s experiences in Wonderland and Neo’s experiences in the Matrix bring up the relationship between perception and reality. But two...

The Matrix

... Frederick Kinley PHIL201-C10LUO March 17, 2014 The Matrix was a film created by the Wachowski Brothers that dealt heavily with the thought of epistemology. Epistemology is a philosophy of origin, nature and limits of human knowledge. In the Matrix the limits of human knowledge was pushed with the question of reality. Is reality real? Is what we see and do true? The question was portrayed in the film by Neo a computer hacker that had a life time nagging question inside that he just could not shake. Neo met Morpheus, a leader of an organization that could help Neo answer his question. Morpheus proposed Neo a plan to follow him take the “red pill” and find the truth or take a “blue pill” and forever stay the same. Neo agrees to take the “red pill” then is launched into a world like he had never seen before. The “Matrix” was a world where humans were only living virtual reality lives. Giant computers were placing thoughts, feelings and everyday life circumstances into their minds. Through their virtual lives they could work, play and even die. Is our reality real today? Are we just victims of a larger, grander scheme? The Allegory of the Cave is a synopsis of The Republic where people live their whole lives in the opening of a cave. The prisoner’s feet and necks are chained so they cannot leave or even turn their heads. Their whole lives the only truth they know is shadow figures that puppet masters cast on a wall before them....

Subconsciousness

...Guillermo Tejeda Professor Serpas Writing 1 16 April 2013 Cap Ou Pas Cap? Imagine if you could delete specific memories from your brain by only taking a little pill? The memories of happiness, fear, anger, depression, and love you once had before are completely gone. Would you dare to delete them all? How about only painful memories? Our memories are incredibly indispensable in our daily basis because these memories make us remember little things that are vital for us. In the article Memory Inc., it says that these pulls can help you remember little things such as remembering where you left your keys. Throughout our lives, we catch, copy and store short fragments of memories in our brains little by little that in the future shape us to be who we are and by deleting our memories, we lose the true meaning of who we are deep inside ourselves. In the article “Memory Inc., “the little red pill” (215), or as I like to call it “drug”, was created by Memory Pharmaceutical based off of Eric Kandel’s experiments and discoveries that he made. Memory Pharmaceutical makes a new class of drugs that help people forget memories and help us remember little things that we might have thought were long gone. Even though people have gone through some tough and horrific memories, memory-altering drugs can ultimately cause further damage because not only we will lose our memories and forget, but also we will never learn from our mistakes and repeat them over again which can consequently make us unhappy...

Wit With Tanning Case Study

...skin is no longer the time-consuming and sometimes expensive process it used to be. With tanning pills there is no longer any need to schedule solarium visits or to slot time to go down to the beach. For a long time the best alternative to the two aforementioned options was to use skin tanning lotions aka pour-ons. These lotions feature an active ingredient i.e. dihydroxyacetone (DHA), and which is a colourless sugar that eliminates the dead cells atop the skin's epidermis. This interaction results in the skin becoming tanned and the effect can last for up to a week. However, as a result of the skin shedding its dead cells everyday and the body renewing the epidermis after forty days, the tan effects also die away, leaving behind unsightly patches....

Matrix and Philosophy

...In the film The Matrix, the question being asked is whether or not anything in this world that we experience every day, from the trees that are growing outside, to the people we encounter on a daily basis, truly exists. In The Matrix film, this question is answered with a resounding “No,” that nothing is real and that the true nature around us is a harsh and cruel reality, one where the entirety of the Earth’s population is enslaved to a race of “machines.” The main character, Neo, is at first scared about everything he is now experiencing, questioning whether or not if he’s actually dreaming. However, he does come to terms with the fact that he is in fact living in the real world, and his new mission in life is to save as many people as possible from the lies of the machines. The Wachowski siblings, the two people who created the trilogy weren’t the first people to experiment with the concept of a “real” world outside of our “fake” reality. Philosophers dating back to the time of Rene Descartes, and even further back to the age of Plato, have toyed and pondered with this concept. Even though their concepts are all generally the same, the way they perceive it is very different. For example, the Greek philosopher Plato had this concept of a man who was trapped in a cavern his entire life and was physically restrained with tethers, so that he could not move. The only thing available to him was a fire that would cast shadows on the walls and he would only know these shadows for...

They claim that by taking this pill and not having to change your lifestyle anyone can reach their goal. Here is the link https://mobile.lipozene.com. and below is my critique on their advertisement. I do not think the advertisement I chose is from what would be considered a reliable source. I think this because they were their own source for advertising their own product. I found no support of their Lipozene product from something like a government health website or not for profit site. In our textbook it was stated that reliable websites often end in .gov, .edu, or .org. As you can see from the link, the website ends in .com. The Lipozene ad does claim both safe and effective weight loss. When reading the ad all it says is that studies were conducted by researchers. There is no access to these studies and the names/credentials...
