The Relationship Between Study Skills and Academic Performance of University Students

...Learning And Study Skills Affect Academic Performance? – An Empirical Investigation Richard Griffin, University of Tennessee at Martin, USA Angie MacKewn, University of Tennessee at Martin, USA Ernest Moser, University of Tennessee at Martin, USA Ken W. VanVuren, University of Tennessee at Martin, USA ABSTRACT Universities and colleges are very interested in understanding the factors that influence their students’ academic performance. This paper describes a study that was conducted at a mid-sized public university in the mid-south, USA, to examine this issue. In this study, the 10-scale, Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) (Weinstein et al., 1987) assessment device was administered to 107 students to measure receptivity to several skills and strategies that purportedly enhance a student’s ability to learn and successfully perform in an academic setting. The results of this study showed that the LASSI scales dealing with attitude, concentration, information processing skill, motivation, self-testing and review techniques, use of study support techniques, time management, and effective test-taking strategies all correlated positively (with statistical significance) to student GPA. There were also statistically significant differences between males and females in their mean scores for several of the above mentioned LASSI scales. Every LASSI subscale, where females significantly outscored males, positively correlated with superior academic performance (i.e., GPA)....

...Language Proficiency and Performance in Content-Area Cognitive Skills Kate O’Neill - Zayed University Peter M. Theuri – Northern Kentucky University Abstract: Literature is replete with studies indicating the need to develop students’ language skills. Little research has emphasized the importance of language proficiency in enhancing learning or performance in specific content-area courses. This study investigates whether a student’s English language proficiency can be associated with her performance in specific cognitive skills (knowledge, comprehension, application, and analysis) in an introductory accounting course. While the results show no association between TOEFL and performance, the mean of the English composition courses do show a significant association with knowledge and comprehension cognitive skills scores on the first financial accounting course. No associations were attached to the application and analysis cognitive skills. The results are meaningful to faculty in balancing language proficiency with quality instruction in content-area courses. Introduction and Reference Context: English as a language of instruction has quickly taken precedence in most of the universities and colleges around the world. What has also become commonplace is the interchange of students from country to country. The term “international students” has traditionally been attributed to students who matriculate in colleges and universities in the western world...

Academic Motivation and Study Skills of University Students

...ACADEMIC MOTIVATION AND STUDY SKILLS OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AN UNDERGRADUATE THESIS PRESENTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES, CENTRAL MINDANO UNIVERSITY PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE Danica Faye M. Quinco Bachelor of Arts in Psychology September 2013 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Motivation is the force that initiates, guides and maintains goal-oriented behaviors. It is what causes us to take action, whether to grab a snack to reduce hunger or enroll in college to earn a degree. The forces that lie beneath motivation can be biological, social, emotional or cognitive in nature. The first attempt of the researchers is to explore the academic motivations that students in a university will tend to use, usually in enduring the college life. People are centrally concerned with motivation -- how to move themselves or others to act. Everyone struggles with how to motivate others and especially on its own. People are often moved by external factors such as reward systems, grades, evaluations, or the opinions they fear others might have of them.  Yet just as frequently, people are motivated from within, by interests, curiosity, care or abiding values. Many individuals enroll into college for several different reasons, including social, economic, or intellectual. Since a degree opens more employment opportunities. Study skills are usually defined as students’ ability to manage time and other...

Contribution of Learning Strategies and Study Skills to the Academic Performance of Teacher Education Students

...CONTRIBUTION OF LEARNING STRATEGIES AND STUDY SKILLS TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF TEACHER EDUCATION STUDENTS Julius M. Raquel Francisco B. Galut Jr. Researchers Dr. Freddie Cabrera Research Teacher CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Learning strategies are the essential symbol of students “learning how to learn”, which is also an important factor affecting learning efficiency and quality. Learning strategies are used by students to help them understand information and solve problems. A learning strategy is a person's approach to learning and using information. Students who do not know or use good learning strategies often learn passively and ultimately fail in school. Like learning strategies, study skills are fundamental to academic competence. Effective study skills are associated with positive outcomes across multiple academic content areas and for diverse learners. Academic competence is associated with the knowledge and application of effective study skills and learning strategies. Capable students may experience difficulty in school especially college students, not because they lack ability, but because they lack good study skills and learning strategies. Although some students develop study skills independently, even normally achieving students may go through school without...

...time students spend studying outside of class has declined each year, with only 47% spending six or more hours per week studying outside of class compared with 34% in 2003. Nonis and Hudson (2006) identify a need for empirical research to determine the impact of student work on academic performance, and its impact on the design of academic programs. Their study found a lack of evidence for a direct relationship between times spent working and academic performance. Sullaiman and Mohezar conducted a study at the University of Malaya in their MBA program. They found conflicting evidence of the impact of work experience on student academic performance. They note studies by McClure, Wells and Bowerman (1986), Schellhardt (1988) and Dreher and Ryan (2000) finding a positive relationship between work experience and academic performance, but studies by Dreher and Ryan (2000, 2002 and 2004) Dugan et al. (2006) and Graham (2001) and Peiperl and Trevelyan (1997) found no relationship between students working and their grade point average. Sullaiman and Mohezar’s study found that work experience is not related to MBA performance. De Zoysa and Rudkin (2007) undertook a pilot study examining the relationship between academic performance and student socio-economic circumstances, which did not find a direct significant relationship between the number of hours of paid employment and student academic performance in accounting. However, a significant positive relationship between shift...

It is believed that a grade is a primary indicator of such learning. If a learner earns high grades it is concluded that they may also have learned a lot while low grades indicate lesser learning. However, many experiences and studies found out that there are also several factors that would account for the grades. No single factor can be definitely pointed out as predicting grades. It has been an interplay of so many factors – gender, IQ, study habits, age, year level, parent’s educational attainment, social status, number of siblings, birth order, etc. In fact, almost all of existing environmental and personal factors are a variable of academic performance.
