...Father/Son Relationships The Nineteen-Forties was a very patriarchal era. The father was the head of the house and his life’s works were passed down to his sons. A strong relationship between a man and his sons was crucial to maintaining a healthy household. Once the relationship began to deteriorate, the entire family unraveled. Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman displays how the relationship between Willy and his two sons creates the downfall of the Loman family. The relationship is constantly changing throughout the story. Biff and Happy idolize and have nothing but love for their father when they are children, but when they grow up they realize how their father failed to prepare them for the real world. Willy Loman is portrayed as an un-fit father. Willy never really had a father when he was growing up. He lost his father when he was very young. Because Willy was deprived of affection as a child, he smothers his sons with love and oppresses them with the nakedness of his hopes for their success. (Carson pg. 92) His older brother Ben stepped in and served as a substitute father. (Carson pg. 90) As a result of not having a true father figure in his childhood, Willy struggled with fatherhood because had no example to base his parenting on. When Ben passed away, Willy lost his last connection to his father. (Carson pg. 91) Willy’s lack of a real father has left him as an insecure person. He has been trying his whole life to compensate for his loss. Willy...

...Running head: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BUSINESS AND SOCIETY Relationship between Business and Society In today’s economy businesses have a divine responsibility and commitment to its relationship between society, family, nation, religious groups and law. In short, business is the activity which provides a good or service with a social and moral contract to society. Chewning, Eby and Roels (1990) have stated, "Christian businesspeople are to be just that – servants of God who act as stewards in the ways that shows God’s will at work, play, worship and in the family” (p. 194). I opened with that quote from our readings because I truly believe that the relationship between society and business needs to be consistent with the moral ethics of the Bible. There has been an ever changing relationship between business and society over the past fifty years. Chewning, Eby and Roels (1990) have stated, "In recent years there has been a revolution in the way people understand the relationship between business and society” and goes on to state “In the future business will be judged not only for its economic contributions, but for its social, political and moral ones as well" (p. 195). This relationship between business and society is apparent and corporations are adding in values to their policies. After ENRON, many corporations fear being labeled as unethical. Chewning, Eby and Roels (1990) tell us, “A number of other important indicators are more important for the long term: employee...

A happy relationship Brooks own opinion is that the relationship is the most important, as he says in text it doesn't matter how many setbacks you go through in your life, when you just have a successful relationship and the other way if you have an unhappy marriage, does career triumphs not make you happier, you will always feel unfulfilled. Brooks says that the relationship between money and wellbeing is complicated, but the correspondence between relationships and happiness is not. We gain happiness through our daily activities like: having sex, socializing, having dinner with others and so on. Brooks uses an example in the text, which says that being married produces gain equivalent to more than 100.000 dollars a year. By this example Brooks also maintain his claim about how happiness doesn't come through money and well being but instead from personal relationships. We live on a surface where...

...to talk about what everyone wants: success and happiness. No, I'm not trying to give you a philosophy lesson. I'm here to talk about two very simple things. That's it. Just two simple things. Success and the real meaning of happiness. Now of course, everybody wants to be successful. So, what is real success? Ralph Waldo Emerson said his definition of success was to laugh often and to win the respect of intelligent people. A lot of students say that going into a good university is success. Some people say getting into a high position in society is success. What is your definition of success? Becoming a pro gamer? Becoming a CEO of a famous company? Some may be the same, but as you see every person's definition of 'success' is different. Personal success comes in many different forms and your concept of being a success might not be the same as mine. If you want to be successful in your life, then the very first thing you should do is to take the time to decide exactly what “success” means to you. Never mind what it means to anyone else, what does it mean to you? To some people the concept of being a success is earning a lot of money. In fact society seems to base the whole concept of success primarily by how much money a person earns. I'm often amazed at how many people define success as making (or having) a lot of money. The way I see it, everybody's definition of success can be mapped on a simple grid. The way a lot of people think, success should be defined as follows: To...

...A Father and Son Relationship Life in the 1940s was a very male-dominant time. The father was the head of the house and his work was passed on to his sons. A solid relationship between a father and his sons was essential to sustaining a strong household. If the relationship began to decline, the whole family collapsed. Death of a Salesman is a play by Arthur Miller in 1949. It tells a story of how the relationship between Willy, the patriarch, and his sons, Biff and Happy, initiates the demise of the Loman family. Biff and Happy adore their father and have nothing but love for him when they are young, but as they get older they realize that Willy did not prepare them for life as adults. Due to not having his father in his life and no examples to base his parenting off of, Willy finds fatherhood to be extremely difficult. When Willy was growing up, he lost his father at a young age. His father left when he was a baby and he “never had a chance to talk to him” and even after all the time that has passed, Willy feels “kind of temporary” about himself (36, Act 1). He turns to his older brother, Ben for advice. Willy repeatedly asks Ben if he is raising his boys the right way (36. Act 1). Willy can be heard asking Ben how he should teach his boys (36. Act 1). Willy’s lack of confidence in parenting ultimately affects how his sons grow up. He knows that he has not raised them to be the best they could be,...

...‘According to Forestier, women are “the quickest way to succeed.” Do you agree?’ By Jackson Green: Throughout “Bel Ami,” women are presented as the quickest route to gaining access to the upper class. Duroy is depicted most commonly utilizing the high profile positions of upper-class Parisian women in order to climb in social status. Furthermore, Forestier is living proof that women can act as directs route to higher social and professional positions. This is compounded further by women’s deep desire for passionate love, as this desire weakens their ability to resist the manipulative charms employed by men, which make it easier for them to cultivate relationships and climb the social ladder. However, while women can aid a man’s venture up the Parisian hierarchy, they can also act as hindrances that limit a man’s ability to progress in wealth and stature. Initially, Duroy approached his goal of rising in social stature ethically, trying to work through the journalistic ranks at La Vie Francais, yet once informed of the social benefits of utilizing women, he is quickly depicted rising in social stature. Initially, Duroy is depicted feeling imprisoned in his, “cramped partly job as a reporter,” which are compounded by his growing fears of being, “without a possibility of escape.” Likewise, Duroy comes to realize that he his journalistically incompetent, which will limit his ability to progress in French society. These factors combine to leave Duroy, imprisoned in his mundane...

...one’s happiness, one may be the relationships people share with others. A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck both imply that the American Dream is primarily about achieving happiness through relationships such as family and companionship— A statement still relevant in modern society’s view of the dream. However, while Hansberry argues family is more important than achieving the dream, Steinbeck argues companionship is essential to achieving the dream. Hansberry reveals that having a family is...

...Searcy McKay English 1001-011X 24 October 2013 Success The definition of success can only be defined by the person defining it. The word success can be taken in several ways. Most learn at a young age that a people have to work hard if they want to be successful, and they spend a big portion of their life striving to become successful. Marketers make people believe that having heaps of money, living in a giant house, driving a 2014 Mercedes Benz, having brand name clothes and the latest technology is what a successful person looks like. For the average person, this is not often the case. Today’s economy and job market makes it difficult for someone without a college education to get a high paying job, and most people cannot afford college. To some success is measured by the amount of money they have; and to others success is measured by the amount of happiness or knowledge they have. My definition of success is someone attaining something that they want. In today’s world, people believe that if one has lots of money and fine luxuries that they are a successful person. In many ways, that is true. Money can make one’s life easier and more comfortable by paying for people to do things for them such as maids or an electrician when something breaks instead of doing it on their own. People work through several years of college to get a good high paying job, and having loads of money can be all one needs to feel successful. Money can buy any material item in this world and having...
