What would living in a society where there was no say in what occupation a person had, or not being able to say me, you, or I, and being punished for standing out and being smart? What is having no control over life like? In the book Anthem, by Ayn Rand, Thier jobs were picked, where to live, when to go to bed, how to talk, or even where to be at during lunch. They dreamed of a society where they could choose all of these things. They dreamed of a democracy. A democracy is a form of government in which supreme power is retained by the people or a representative for the people that is voted on by them (livescience.com). Having the power to chose what everyone wants with limited government interference, and having guaranteed rights, and providing social equality and diversity for everyone is just some of the many reasons why a democracy is a strong form of government. …show more content…
Athens experimented with a direct democracy but only male citizens over the age of 18 were allowed to vote. Democracy was achieved by several stages of reforms linked with solon in 594 B.C, with the 10 tribes of Cleisthenes in 508 B.C. and with Pericles 462 B.C. (Gascoigne). A democracy only works if the people go along with it, meaning everyone does there part. There are different responsibilities with it as well. The adults (people over the age of 18) have the responsibility to be educated about and aware of societal issues and to vote (the voting age can vary with democracies). Political parties and civic unions are vital to educate voters, organize voter groups and campaign (Clark). Although the United States is the most common form of democracy there are many more democracies such as Germany, India, Mexico, Poland, Pakistan, and so many more.
