But why is Halloween celebrated around the world? Some people view Halloween as a time for fun - putting on costumes, trick-or-treating, and having theme parties. ...In the film they also showed famous murals for this occasion such as Diego Rivera’s famous mural dedicated to the day of the dead. Flowers also play a key role on this day; many people use yellow flowers, they say the yellow flowers have the smell of death. Before the event the women prepare food to take to the cemetery for their loved ones that are gone, many believe they come back to cemetery on this day. On November 1st , they light thousands of candles and incenses to help guide the dead to the cemetery. At midnight the dead are supposed to be there. The Day of the Dead, is celebrated during the same time frame as Halloween. Both events are centered on tradition rooted in paying respect to the dead. Though mostly different, a few characteristics of both holidays make them similar. Both Halloween and the Day of the Dead use food as part of the celebration. Halloween involves trick or treating where children knock on doors to receive candy, sweets and treats. Though food is also used during the Day of the Dead, the food is placed on alters at the grave sites of those being remembered during the holiday. In the days and weeks before the Day of the Dead, graves are cleaned and prepared for the festivities. In contrast, graves are avoided during Halloween. Both holidays use ghosts and spirits in celebrations. Halloween tends to use skeletons, zombies, ghost, and monsters, when it comes to celebrating with costumes and decorations. Skeletons are also used in Day of the Dead...

...which can restrict the opportunities they have in life. Economics play a key role in the African American literature as it effects the lives of many people. This was found in pieces of literature such as the article "How Poverty and Racism Persist in Mississippi", the novel The Water is Wide, and the poem "Note on Commercial Theater". First, the article "How Poverty and Racism Persists in Mississippi" shares the story of the author and his life as a child growing up in poverty. He tells about the struggles he went through such as only eating beans for days on end and constantly being hungry. As a child that just seemed ordinary to him as he didn't know anything else. As he is now grown up and a writer for The Atlantic, he knows different and is able to recognize the position of what he was in. Not only did he live that life, but many others did as well. Thirty two percent of African Americans in Mississippi live in poverty which is much higher than the national average....

Early myths in all cultures are populated by demons and darkness, early Egyptian mythology resounds with tales of a world beyond the physical, a realm of the spirits, to be revered and feared. Classical mythology is filled with monsters such as the Cerberus, the Minotaur, Medusa, the Hydra, the Sirens, Cyclops, Scylla and Charybdis, to name just a few. Every culture has a set of stories dealing with the unknown and unexplained, tales that chill, provoke and keep the listener wondering "what if..?" Horror films are the present-day version of the epic poems and ballads told round the fires of our ancestors. Horror movies of the 1970s reflect the grim mood of the decade. After the optimism of the 1960s, with its sexual and cultural revolutions, and the moon landings, the seventies was something of a disappointment. By 1970, the party was over; the Beatles split, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix died, while John Kennedy, his brother Robert, and Martin Luther King were all felled by an assassin’s bullet. These tragedies seemed to be just the first domino to fall, for then came Nixon...

...as a mystery, because the way they chose to live their lives was completely different than his. Most children see things that they cannot obtain as being mysterious because it is unknown territory for them. As a child, I was pretty snotty; I was slightly bossy, and other children, did not really appreciate it, but what child didn’t have their flaws. It’s not even really our fault, it’s our parents’. They are the ones who modeled the behavior that we portray. In Us and Them, Sedaris is very put out about having to share his halloween candy with his neighbors, the Tomkeys, who did not go trick-or-treating on October thirty-first. Many children in his situation would have trouble giving up their belongings, even if it may just be candy, because our young, child brains believe that what’s mine is mine, and what’s yours is mine if I like it. The only logical reason is that our parents trained us to think like this, but in all honesty our parents do play a role in what we think and how we process certain things. When we are little, we are given everything we could ever want, and when we grow up and are told to share, we don’t want to because we had been given everything since we could remember. I don’t believe what Sedaris did was right, in not sharing his candy with the Tomkeys; however, I don’t believe it was his fault that he did not want to share. He was just a child and did not understand what was happening around him. His parents had chosen to give him and his sisters, the...

...Your co-worker brings in cupcakes to work, your wife makes cookies for a holiday party, and your daughter has pounds of candy from Halloween trick or treating. Sugar is everywhere. It is a celebration, it is a festivity, it is a love. It is also a hazard. In a recent study we showed that sugar, perhaps more than salt is a vast contributor to the development of cardiovascular disease. The evidence is growing too, in New York Times Sugar Season Article written by James J. Dinicolantonio he says “Abundant sugar intake is leading to fatty liver disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, obesity and kidney disease.” Yet still people can not resist it. They know the consequence on sugar intake and they know sugar is everywhere. The reason is simple...

Keeping hope in stressful situations is a trait that families with child cancer patients need to have. A family that has a child with cancer not only has to worry about the child’s schoolwork and illness, but also has to worry about the medical bills. What the St. Jude Foundation does is enable the families to focus on the child, not worry about the payments. The family of the patients at St. Jude never receive a bill for treatment, therapy, or housing. St. Jude Children’s Research Center does more than just treat pediatric cancer patients; it also plays a role in the dynamics of...

When it comes to theme parks, Disney will be the first thing that comes to everyone’s mind. Because of the great success of Disney, researchers want to look into the reasons why it is so important and so attractive to the entertainment industry. For example, Disney’s Asian theme parks usually would apply local customs and festivals into their programs. And by doing so, it draws more local tourists to attend the events. Disney always pays attention to these cultural factors and uses them to its advantages. Plus,...

...SEGMENTATION, TARGETING & POSITIONING SHUBHAM JOSHI ROLL No. 60 MBA 1st SEMESTER Markets are not homogeneous. A company cannot connect with all customers in large, broad, or diverse markets. Consumers vary on many dimensions and often can be grouped according to one or more characteristics. A company needs to identify which market segments it can serve effectively. Such decisions require a keen understanding of consumer behavior and careful strategic thinking. LEVELS OF MARKET SEGMENTATION The starting point for market segmentation is mass marketing, in which the seller engages in the mass production, mass distribution, and mass promotion of one product for all buyers. It is believed that mass marketing creates the largest potential market, which leads to the lowest costs, which in turn can lead to lower prices or higher margins. But, many critics point to the increasing splintering of the market, which makes this process difficult. Some claim that mass marketing is dying. Most companies are turning to micromarketing at one of 4 levels: (1) Segment Marketing: A market segment consists of a group of customers who share a similar set of needs and wants. The marketer does not create the segments; his task is to identify the segments and decide which one to target. Segment marketing offers key benefits over mass marketing. The company can deliver better design, price, and deliver the product or service to satisfy the target market. (2) Niche Marketing: A niche is a more...

...The Cathedral and the Bazaar Eric Steven Raymond cf text and copyright at: www.tuxedo.org/~esr/writings Abstract I anatomize a successful open-source project, fetchmail, that was run as a deliberate test of some surprising theories about so=ware engineering suggested by the history of Linux. I discuss these theories in terms of two fundamentally di:erent development styles, the “cathedral” model of most of the commercial world versus the “bazaar” model of the Linux world. I show that these models derive from opposing assumptions about the nature of the so=ware-debugging task. I then make a sustained argument from the Linux experience for the proposition that “Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow”, suggest productive analogies with other self-correcting systems of selfish agents, and conclude with some exploration of the implications of this insight for the future of so=ware. 1 The Cathedral and the Bazaar Linux is subversive. Who would have thought even five years ago (1991) that a world-class operating system could coalesce as if by magic out of part-time hacking by several thousand developers scattered all over the planet, connected only by the tenuous strands of the Internet? Certainly not I. By the time Linux swam onto my radar screen in early 1993, I had already been involved in Unix and open-source development for ten years. I was one of the first gnu contributors in the mid-1980s. I had released a good deal of open-source so=ware onto the net, developing...

...IGOROTS * Home * IGOROT SONGS * IGOROT DANCE * IGOROT TRADITIONS * MONEY ON THE MOUNTAIN IGOROT TRADITIONS IGOROT TRADITIONS When we talk about Igorot identity and culture, we also have to consider the time. My point is that: what I am going to share in this article concerning the Igorot culture might not be the same practiced by the Igorots of today. It has made variations by the passing of time, which is also normally happening to many other cultures, but the main core of respect and reverence to ancestors and to those who had just passed is still there. The Igorot culture that I like to share is about our practices and beliefs during the "time of Death". Death is part of the cycle of life. Igorots practice this part of life cycle with a great meaning and importance. Before the advent of Christianity in the Igorotlandia, the Igorots or the people of the Cordilleran region in the Philippines were animist or pagans. Our reverence or the importance of giving honor to our ancestors is a part of our daily activities. We consider our ancestors still to be with us, only that they exist in another world or dimension. Whenever we have some special feasts (e.g., occasions during death, wedding, family gathering, etc.), when we undertake something special (like going somewhere to look for a job or during thanksgiving), we perform some special offer. We call this "Menpalti/ Menkanyaw", an act of butchering and offering animals. During these times we call them...
