...Rhonda Sanford 7 November 2012 Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: The Role of Honor Honor has ancient roots in the history of man, but few periods from our past stand in comparison to medieval times. During this time of kings and castles stood a value system spawned out of the sheer and intense belief of honor. Geoffrey Chaucer’s Sir Gawain and the Green Knight excellently encapsulates this immense respect for an honorable and noble lifestyle. Chaucer endowed English literature of the time with foundation and became a fore-father of English poetry. “Chaucer was the first to conceive of poetry in English not as the product of an isolated, provincial nation located in an obscure corner of Europe but as a vital agent in the fourteenth-century emergence of the vernacular as a literary language” (Simon pg. 657). In each of the four fitts composing Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, one can easily interpret that Chaucer’s writing is developed on the basis of honor and a chivalrous approach to life. It takes no time in reading through the beginning of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight to notice the relevance and importance of honor in the culture encompassing King Arthur’s time. While preparing to feast, King Arthur, his knights, and numerous other respectable individuals of the kingdom are seated not at random nor by age, but by honor. It seems as if an individual’s seat at this dinner, through honor, represents their social status in the kingdom. Chaucer states, “Their merrymaking...

...include not just your best friend but five other best friends as well as three sisters, a brother, two nieces, and a nephew, we've come up with a list of the many roles -- almost all of them optional -- that you may choose to use in your ceremony. Maid of Honor. Usually one close friend or sister is chosen, but sometimes brides choose to have two Maids of Honor. Perhaps the most honored role a friend can play, the Maid of Honor (or Matron of Honor, if married) stands by the bride during the ceremony and is usually involved in throwing the bridal shower and bachelorette party. When a bride's best friend is a male, sometimes they nonetheless choose to have him play this role. In these cases, the role can be referred to as the Honor Attendant....

...The first quote sums up the narrator’s intention of writing this novel and the town’s fascination with the crime of honor. Throughout the span of the novel, it becomes increasingly clear that the murder had to happen. Santiago’s fate was to die for the sake of honor as well as the functionality of the town. Although, it is not even clear that he took Angela’s virginity the murder needed to happen. This demonstrates the irrationality of the values. There is no fact showing that he in fact took this virginity but the town needs to point a finger to move on. This quote is illustrative of the town’s obsession with the murder and its inevitability as fate. However, due to the town’s obsessive nature it may be that some townspeople have difficulty rationalizing the event. Perhaps in hindsight they begin to realize their guilt in the crime. When the narrator writes that no one could talk about anything else, it suggests that the event had an adverse effect on the town. It was society’s fault for creating these ridiculous standards. Many people could’ve prevented it from happening but no one did. The blame of the crime shouldn’t be placed on the brother’s because society dismissed it as something that needed to happen. However, according to excerpt the knowledge of the facts isn’t pivotal to the town’s people; this is witnessed when the narrator says “that we weren’t doing it on an urge to clear up mysteries”. Perhaps, some of the more traditional member’s of this town are more interested...

Others may see it as someone who is respected or famous in their such field or profession. ...This Essay is to explain the Army Values and how they pertain to the mistake I made. In the US army we are taught to live by the 7 army values. They are broken down to us in the acronym ‘LDRSHIP’. Loyalty “Bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. constitution, the Army, and other soldiers.” Duty “Fulfill your obligations.” Respect “Treat people as they should be treated.” Selfless Service “Put the welfare of the nation, the Army and your subordinates above your own.” Honor “Live up to the army values.” Integrity “Do what’s right legally and morally.” and Personal Courage “Face fear, danger or adversity (physical or moral).” We are all drilled on these 7 army values from day one of basic training. First we commit them to memory. Then we learn to live by them. The three Army Values that pertain the most to this particular incident are Loyalty, Integrity, and Honor. What I am going to do is define each using the Army’s definition and then state how I did not use them. First being, Loyalty- is bearing witness to your allegiance to the US Constitution and its ideals, to the Army, to your unit, to your fellow Soldiers and subordinates, and to yourself as an Army Professional. Loyalty means placing your professional obligations and commitments before your personal ones. It means dedication to carrying out all of your unit’s missions and to serving faithfully the values of the country, the Army, and your unit. Loyalty is a value that has to be worked...

...Honor can be proven through the novel to be one of the most important aspects of Colombian society in the 1950’s. The Vicario brothers that were planning to murder Santiago believed that the honor of their family could be saved by it. They also strongly believed that their sister Angela, lost her value when she lost her virginity to a man she was not married to. It was necessary to kill Santiago in order to regain their family’s name and part of their honor. On page 29 of the novel, the narrator suggests that this seems to be a morally just reason to kill someone and could have been repeated again and again without thinking twice. He states that “They would have done it again a thousand times over for the same reason”. This part of the text allows the reader to comprehend that in Colombian society honor is greatly admired, and that Colombian society is desperate to do anything in the name of honor. They believed that premarital sexual intercourse was entirely degrading and brought their familial social status underground. This can lead to the questioning of why Colombians in the 1950’s viewed premarital sex as such a degrading action for women to do but not...

...significantly to such a "choice." inadequacies in the Honor System, in the Academy environment which was to have supported this System, and in the administration of the EE 304 examination combined to make a cheating incident practically inevitable. A. Honor System Perhaps the most fundamental of the Honor System's inadequacies has been the expansion of the Code well beyond its intended purpose. Cadets have been found guilty for isolated conduct which cannot fairly be characterized as having made them dishonorable. Recently, for example, a cadet who reported himself for stating that he had done 20 sit-ups, when in fact he had done only 18, was found guilty of violating the Honor Code. A similar incident had occurred in 1970. in July of 1974, a new cadet who reported himself for telling his squad leader, who "did not remember the particular incident," that he had shaved, when in fact he had not, was separated. In 1975, a third classman was found guilty by the Cadet Honor Committee of "intentionally deceiving" in that "he wore a second class dress coat to a motion picture" during the week (a regulation prohibited third classmen from attending weeknight movies). If these cases were aberrations, our concerns would not be as great. They are, however, representative of a significant number of the approximately 180 non-EE 304 cases which have resulted in findings of guilt by the respective Cadet Honor Committees during the 1970s. The Honor Code too...

...Controversy of Honor Codes Schools generally agree to have some sort of honor code to keep students from cheating, but should this be necessary? They are enforced to keep student’s behavior in line and keep them out of trouble. The code has students thinking for themselves, making them think independently and originally. Students are obligated to report those who are violating the honor code making them feel active in a community. These are just some reasons I feel as though schools should have their own type of honor code. Expulsion can be a result of students not following the honor code they have agreed to. Being entirely kicked from a school is not something that anyone wants to happen in their life. This strikes a fear into the student keeping them on their best behavior. Nobody would want to have to tell their family that they were expelled from the school they worked hard to...
