...Jason Chen Mr. Hampstead English 124 003 14 February 2014 Leaders of Yesterday Running an empire compared to a city-state is not that much different depending on who is in power. Some characteristics seem to be prevalent in history and carried over to modern times. Marco Polo conducts much analysis on the many regions of the worlds he visits but he has a specific goal in discussing leadership. Does he believe that a leader should be a moral character or more of a political ideologist? Is it better to be a smart leader or a good person? The main focus of Polo was Kaan, but his discussions of other leaders, such as the Old Man of the mountain and Lord Prester, gives insight to other leaders of the past. The Old Man of the mountain was a deceptive leader who tricked people into being his followers because they claimed he controlled a place of paradise. He trained a group called Ashishin or assassins. The Old Man would take a man from the paradise and ask him from where he came; the man would reply, “that he came from Paradise!” (Polo book 1 Chapter 24) The Old Man used this illusion to motivate men to do his bidding. The selected men were driven to do his work based solely on the desire to return to paradise. The Old Man of the mountain was a commander of deception. Even though he used an illusion he was able to secure his kingdom, making him an effective leader. He did not seem interested in invading other areas, but to maintain the system he had created. The Old Man’s...

...is organized in a superlatively efficient way, a society, which some scholars consider as an aristocratic government (Phylosophypages, 2001). Plato had it that such a society is made up of the rulers, the soldiers, and the people. In this perfect society, Plato claimed that the guardians of the state are supposed to be people with skills to lead. He was however, incredulous by the fact that this may not be achieved in the future of the perfect society. To this fact he gives an ingenious riposte, such societies will be under the guardianship of the offspring of the current guardians. That means what the future society will be under the guardianship of a not skill but the benefits of inheritance. In such a society, dissatisfaction is possibly the way of the day. Plato maintained that for dissatisfaction an understanding of the nature of the human being is the answer. That is, people are naturally different and they have where they fit in the society (Philosophyprofessor). In such a situation, they will be able to rule the society. A perfect society, I believe, is one that is distinctive by leaders who have the interests of the society at hand. That is, a society under the reign of guardians who are in favor of the members of the society and their needs. A society that is simply having rulers who have inherited power is liable to doom. This is because, in most cases, such kinds of people not only lack the wisdom to rule, but they are also corrupted by the benefits of inheritance that...

Manalili ZCH 112 – EN 11A Date Performed: June 25, 2014 Date Submitted: July 30, 2014 II. Introduction This is an experiment conducted for learners to have a good observation about measurements and understand how it does works along with Science. This activity will seek answers on how to make calculations on density, mass, and volume. It uses some particular apparatuses from the lab to make measurements more accurate and precise guided by the professor in charge of the activity. III. Materials Materials and Apparatuses: Metal block, Metric ruler, Small pebbles, and 10.0% (m/v) table sugar solution Platform balance, 50-mL graduated cylinder, 25-mL graduated cylinder, 50-mL beaker, and medicine dropper IV. Results 1. Why chemicals are never placed directly on the balance pans? Because you need to make sure chemicals are properly and safely put on and back so you wouldn’t have any trouble when you’re done. Also it was a requirement for you to be safe while measuring something. 2. Why must objects be weighed at room temperature? It should be on a fair temperature since it may affect the accuracy of the measurement. The movement of molecules while measuring may be affected by the temperature so it needs to be in balanced temperature. 3. What would be the effect on the density of a solid whose...

...was the Metals Metaphor. This metaphor states, citizens are born with innate metals within them whether it be gold, silver, or iron/bronze. This would be utilized to ensure people would understand which of the classes they are placed within the city. The Metals Metaphor has been interpreted in many different ways. Some believe this would be told to the city to ensure the auxiliaries, or working class, would be pleased with their place in society, while other have interpreted it was a means to maintain the rulers’ happiness considering they lived a life without wealth and possessions. I do not believe this tale would be told to preserve the rulers’ contentment. I disagree with this specific interpretation for a few different reasons. First and foremost, Socrates speaks on how highly valued education is. Socrates presents “The Allegory of the Cave”, and how a leader would need to metaphorically “be dragged out of a cave as far as possible” to rule efficiently. I believe a ruler, with all of the education provided, would understand the importance of their leadership and would place that above possessions and/or wealth. They are born into thinking a “philosopher-king” position is the outmost highest achievement; therefore they are bred to place that above any materialistic item. After all of their education and training, a philosopher-king would have a passion to rule. This can be compared to many things in our society today. Some of the most important, life-altering jobs do not...

...Introduction Lever is a very simple device that can measure the mass of an object. In this experiment, we are going to make a lever that consists of ruler, 50 gram weight and string that could measure the mass of a battery. We will get the mass by using the formula of moment (moment = distance×force) and based on the data that we obtain from the experiment. Moment is a force that can make object turn around if there is a pivot, for example the see-saw. Objective * To understand the use of moment formula (moment = distance×force) * To use the principle of moment to calculate an unknown weight. Materials * Meter stick × 1 * Battery × 1 * 50 gram weight × 1 * String × 1 * Scissor × 1 * Tape × 1 * Retort stand and clamp × 1 Procedure 1. Cut the string into half with scissor 2. Fold one of the strings into half and then tie a knot at the end of the string. Repeat this for another string. 3. Tape the battery on the string and then tape the 50 gram weight on another string. 4. Clamp the meter stick on the retort stand with clamp on the middle (50cm) of the stick. 5. Hang the battery on one side of the meter stick and the 5g weight on another side. 6. Move the 5g weight to make the meter stick balanced. 7. Loosen the clamp to test if the stick is balanced 8. Find the distance between battery and pivot, and also the distance between 50g weight and pivot. 9. Use Moment = distance × force and Distance1...

...important historical documents seeing what type of mistakes and miscommunications can be possible. One of the small details that was found different was about the status of the nobility versus Montezuma, specifically the event where they all meet the new coming Spaniards. In the older English version, is just mentions the nobility alongside Montezuma. This can be misinterpreted as the nobility and Montezuma are of equal ranking with no one being on top of each other on the hierarchy scale. Thanks to the new English version, there is a clarification made that when they all meet the Spaniards, it's Montezuma and Montezuma's rulers and nobles. This adds a new possessive detail in which Montezuma essentially controls these rulers and nobles. So it can be inferred that Montezuma is truly more powerful than we thought if he can be above any ruler. He is the "ruler of rulers" in a sense. Another detail that is missing in the old English version is the magnitude of the gift-giving that occurred. Montezuma in the older version was mention to have given the Spanish just "necklaces of gold and fine stone". Which seems...

...woman's sake; knowing that this is a joy that soon grows cold in clasping arms--an evil woman to share thy bed and thy home. For what wound could strike deeper than a false friend? Nay, with loathing, and as if she were thine enemy, let this girl go to find a husband in the house of Hades. For since I have taken her, alone of all the city, in open disobedience, I will not make myself a liar to my people--I will slay her. So let her appeal as she will to the majesty of kindred blood. If I am to nurture mine own kindred in naughtiness, needs must I bear with it in aliens. He who does violence to the laws, or thinks to dictate to his rulers, such a one can win no praise from me. No, whomsoever the city may appoint, that man must be obeyed, in little things and great, in just things and unjust; and I should feel sure that one who thus obeys would be a good ruler no less than a good subject, and in the storm of spears would stand his ground where he was set, loyal and dauntless at his comrade's...

...The Complexities of Measurement The importance of units and iteration in measurement In order to become proficient in measuring space (in terms of length, area or volume), children need to understand two fundamental concepts: the idea of a unit and the process of iterating a unit to complete a measurement. Understanding Units The important aspects of learning about units include: Appropriateness: A unit must be related to the aspect of the object to be measured. For example, you need a unit of area to measure area; you can’t measure area with a linear tool. This distinction may not be easy for students, since they are often taught that calculating the area of a rectangle is as easy as measuring its length and width with a linear tool and multiplying the results. This procedure only makes sense, however, if the student understands that this calculation is equivalent to dividing the rectangle into identical square units and counting them. The idea of a unit of area – e.g. a square inch – is unfamiliar to many students, so they don’t have a ready strategy for measuring area by counting square units. Several researchers have described young students’ difficulty measuring area (Nitbach and Lehrer, 1996), demonstrating how they sometimes treat length as a space-filling attribute, measuring the area of an object in linear inches, not in square inches. Consistency: Once you choose a unit, you must continue to use the same unit throughout your measuring task. The idea of maintaining...

...have to fall in the same “neighborhood” as their people, “Therefore, to achieve what he can of that perfection, every man needs to stay in the neighborhood of others and associate with them... which is why he is called the social and political animal.” If they are in the same neighborhood or class as the people then the leader would know what the people go through. The people always know if the leader is doing a good job. A good leader leads the good and a bad leader leads the bad, even though, in their mind it seems as they are doing good. But no matter who they rule, they have the natural capacity to rule. Someone would have to be born with this ability to rule, and handle everything that comes with being a leader. This is what most rulers have in common. Like King Hammurabi, even though he was a very good leader, his laws were ridiculous. But people still considered him a good leader regardless of his laws in the code of Hammurabi. King Hammurabi brought order to his people and they appreciated that, they knew and they did not want to be a victim of karma. “Even if a man builds a house badly, and it falls and kills the owner, the builder must be slain. If the owner’s son is killed, then the builder’s son is slain.” This is what an “eye for an eye” meant during those times. King Hammurabi of Babylon was a very good king. Not only did he establish order but he created a code which his people should abide by, if not then there were serious...

...Ashes Hollow River Investigation. Aim: In this investigation the aim was to compare the characteristics of a river that we visited (Ashes Hollow) to the Bradshaw Model. This is a good river to test certain theories and other predictions, as the river is easily measured and fits into the upper and middle course of a river which is helpful to me. It is also relatively near to me so is very convenient. Hypothesis: My hypothesis is looking for a relationship between two features. They were: Velocity increases further down the stream, as the rivers gradient decreases, the rivers width increases and as velocity increases, so does bed-load size. Location: Ashes Hollow stream is located in Shropshire, which is near Church Stetton. The valley where the river is is a V-shaped valley. This valley gets steeper the further up the river. There are a few minor waterfalls located in the upper and middle course, and there is a large amount of vegetation all along the river with decreasing amounts nearer the top. To investigate the river I chose 8 sights along the river. I selected these sights by working out how far from the bottom of the river it was to a point near the top and then dividing the number by 8. Working this out gave me 8 sites that were exactly the same length apart. Methods: Width – To measure the rivers width I used a tape measure. I did this by placing the start end on one side of the river bank at water level, and then I moved the measure along to...
