... The Health of Russian Society and a look into Healthcare Summary It’s the end of 2007 and there are still many issues to address when it comes to the health of Russians and health care itself. HIV/AIDS continues to hover at epidemic levels, alcoholism is a country wide problem and death by alcohol poisoning is still on the rise in some areas. Over half of the deaths in Russia are caused by heart problems but the funding for treatment remains insufficient. Russia leads the world in the prevalence of smoking and has yet to sign the World Health Organizations anti-smoking convention. Health care facilities fail to meet fire and safety norms with things like faulty electric power systems and unsatisfactory fire evacuation requirements. Drug addiction continues to be a problem and over 90 percent of the heroin coming into the country is from Afghanistan. Some other noteworthy concerns are the appearances of avian (bird) flu throughout the country and the large number of tuberculosis cases including ones that are drug resistant. However there are some positive trends that have developed. Within the next few years about 30,000 young HIV patients are slated to receive therapy. Drug use is not as prevalent as it was several years ago and increases in drug addiction have ended. The health of Russian conscripts is improving as well compared with the last several years. Introduction 1. Alcoholism and alcohol poisoning deaths are a real problem Russian society faces. ...

...Erik Larson’s books The Devil in the White City, In the Garden of Beasts, and Dead Wake, are all about major events of history. The Devil in the White City is about the Chicago World’s Fair, Dead Wake is about events leading up to the sinking of the Lusitania, and In the Garden of Beasts is about Berlin in a Germany that was approaching World War II. Each of these topics is interesting enough to begin with, but with Erik Larson’s style of writing, they are even more enjoyable to read about. Each of the books focuses on a few people who were alive during the event that Larson is describing, and follows them throughout that event. Larson’s stories are more relatable, and interesting to read rather than a summary of an event because they not only tell what happened in history, but how it affected people. The Devil in the White City focuses on the Chicago World’s Fair, and focused mainly on a two people that were influential to the fair. The reader learned of the story of Daniel Burnham, an extremely talented Chicago architect who was tasked with building the World’s...

...manufacturer’s conversion process to produce components, subassemblies, or finished products” (Satterlee, 2009). These inventory items are “unfinished goods” such as “a steelmaker uses iron ore and other metals in producing steel” (Raw material, 2006). When determining whether to conduct business in a particular region, the availability and relative proximity to raw materials should be a determining factor in the decision making process. While it can be beneficial for emerging businesses when the cost of raw materials is low in a particular region, it can become financially problematic when the vast majority of a nation’s economic system is wrapped up in the production and cost of raw materials. MAJOR ARTICLE SUMMARY This article is a general overview of the Russian economy as of December 2008 that reflects on the causes for a “slowdown” the preceding October. Even though there was a “slowdown” in the economy, growth was still taking place as evidenced in the GDP. For October of that year, GDP growth was 5.9% relative to the 7.7% seen in January-September. The price of oil and raw materials fell during that period which accounted for a greater decline in exports. Retail sales and agricultural output seemed to be carrying the weight of the economy during the last quarter of 2008. Industrial outputs and manufacturing took a dive and the overall outlook from the business sector showed a considerable lack of confidence and access...

...APPLICATION OF COMMUNITY HEALTH & POPULATION-FOCUSED NURSING VWT Task 2 Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) Kelly Belcher 307442 Western Governors University ("INSTITUTO DE BIOLOGIA & INGENIERIA DE ECOSISTEMAS: RUSSIAN REPORT WARNS OF GRAVE MONSANTO THREAT TO WORLD," n.d.) I chose to do this assignment about the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). It is caused by the coronavirus MERS-CoV. I have never heard of this condition, and arbitrarily picked it because my best friend’s last name is Corona. I was interested to learn that, ironically, the only known case in the US was in Indiana, where I live. “Coronaviruses are common viruses that most people get some time in their life. Human coronaviruses usually cause mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses” ("CDC - Coronavirus - About," n.d.), but >30% of people who have MERS will die from it ("CDC - Coronavirus - Middle East Respiratory Syndrome - MERS-CoV," n.d.). MERS was originally diagnosed in Saudi Arabia in 2012. It is a virus that attacks the respiratory tract. Typically the people who test positive for the virus show the same symptoms. They have a fever, cough, and shortness of breath and may also have pneumonia, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. To discuss the epidemiological determinants of this disease I first needed to establish a working definition. “A determinant is any factor or variable that can affect the frequency with which a disease occurs in a population”...

...HIS 102 December 7, 2012 Film Review of Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to stop worrying and Love the Bomb Plot Summary: The class was asked to review the film Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to stop worrying and Love the Bomb. The movie was a satirical comedy about nuclear weaponry and what could happen if the wrong person pushed the wrong button. At the core of the film was the story of top-ranking men of the United States and the Soviet Union who had become so destabilized by their inferiority complexes, they dared to use nuclear war as a way to supplement their short-comings. Ironically, the movie was made during a time when the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union was, perhaps, at its worst. To the politically-aware, the film could have seemed rather untimely. The film was a ridiculously exaggerated take on Cold War attitudes, with the primary focus being the satirical theory of mutual assured destruction (MAD). Even though MAD was a realistic threat during the time, the film made it seem trivial and funny. The film opened with the mid-air refueling of a long-range bomber with obvious sexual overtones. After that, the movie shifted into gear when General Jack D. Ripper became mentally unhinged and sent bombers to attack the Soviet Union. The subject of the movie was Dr. Strangelove, a mysterious, wheelchair-bound German scientist whose mechanical arm was always on the verge of a Nazi salute. Loaded with...

...export routes in Central Asia has taken the form of a new Great Game, one in which Western energy companies (encouraged and assisted by their governments) compete with state owned Russian and Chinese firms for the right to exploit Central Asian resources. The implementation of the Turkmenistan-China Gas Pipeline, which began to pump gas to China in 2010, has been the most significant development of the past five years and signals, more than any other event, the primacy of Chinese influence in the region. Turkmenistan now possesses the proven reserves and a partnership with China that could help it achieve sustainable development, although there are many domestic factors impeding this. As China increases its presence in the region, it seems that Russia and the West are being left behind in the race for Central Asian hydrocarbons. Executive Summary In the complex geopolitical environment of the Caspian region, all the players involved must carefully balance political and economic objectives. Each actor brings its own set of goals for the region, and in the case of the external actors these interests are generally in conflict. While Russia seeks to preserve its hegemony over export routes of Caspian hydrocarbons, Western governments overtly seek to undermine precisely this element of Russian influence. To the East, China has been continuing its resource-based form of checkbook diplomacy in Central Asia in much the same way as it has been aggressively acquiring assets...
