“The Scarlet Ibis” a short story by James Hurst presents a central idea of pride and how dangerous it can be. This idea of pride is developed through the Internal conflict the narrator has about his weak underdeveloped little brother Doodle. Which ultimately leads to the death of Doodle. Doodle is five years old and unable to walk, the narrator is conflicted about this he loves his brother but is embarrassed by the fact he can't walk. At that point his pride takes over and teaching how to walk “putting him on his feet a hundred times each afternoon” (5). Until Doodle is able to walk. However, that wasn't good enough the narrator's pride got the best of him he began to teach Doodle how “to run, to swim, to climb trees and to fight”
