“The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst illustrates pride as the Narrator struggles to have love and compassion with his overpowering pride. Throughout the story, the Narrator displays selfishness. His pride for a good reputation is the only reason why he helps Doodle. “When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn’t walk, so I set out to teach him,” Narrator states (2).
