...The Searchers The Searchers is considered to be a true American masterpiece of filmmaking, and the best, most influential, and maybe even the most-admired film of director John Ford. The film's themes are racism, individuality, the American character, and the opposition between civilizations: exemplified by homes, caves, and other domestic interiors and the untamed frontier wilderness. The Searchers paved the way for later amazing westerns. John Wayne plays Ethan Edwards, a former Confederate soldier who returns to his brother, Aaron's frontier cabin three years after the end of the Civil War. Ethan still has his rebel uniform and weapons, a large stash of Yankee gold, and no explanations as to where he's been since Lee's surrender. A loner uncomfortable in the presence of his family, Ethan also has a bitter hatred of Indians and trusts no one but himself. Ethan and Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter), Aaron's adopted son, band together a team of Texas Rangers fending off an assault by renegade Comanches. Before they can run off the Indians, several homes are attacked, and Ethan returns to find his brother and sister-in-law dead and their two daughters kidnapped. While they soon learn that one of the girls is dead, the other, Debbie, is still alive, and with obsessive determination, Ethan and Martin spend the next five years in a relentless search for Debbie and for Scar (Henry Brandon), the fearsome Comanche chief who abducted her. But while Martin wants to save his sister and bring...

...Sam Grudzien The Civil War to Modern America The Searchers Reflection Essay Tom Ford’s The Searchers is a Western film starring John Wayne who plays Ethan Edwards, a Civil War veteran, and spends the film on a search for his niece Debbie who was abducted by a Native American tribe called the Comanche. On his search, Wayne is accompanied by Jeffrey Hunter, who plays as Edwards’ nephew Martin Pawley. The two men search for five years before finding Debbie. Throughout the movie we learn as viewers that Ethan is a racist man and shows no respect towards Native Americans. We also find out that even though he has devoted five years of his life searching for Debbie, his plan is to murder her simply because he would rather see her dead than living as an Indian. John Wayne plays the role of Ethan Edwards in the film The Searchers and his character is a Western hero, but not a typical Western hero. Ethan is a hate-driven, racist outlaw and a loner with no wife or children. In the beginning of the film Ethan rides up to his brother’s home and has no explanation of where he has been or what he has been doing. He does whatever he wants and doesn’t care to let anyone know. Ethan also shows some anti-social behaviors during the funeral scene. While everyone is mourning the deaths of Ethan’s brother Aaron and his family, Ethan is eager to begin the hunt for the Native Americans. He ends the funeral by saying “Put an amen to it. There’s no more time for praying. Amen”. Ethan is not...

...The cinematography of The Searchers (1956) has earned a well deserved reputation as the best in the Western genre for its use of framing and lighting to develop an important juxtaposition between the outside and the inside, and on a deeper level to explore the connotations of this juxtaposition in relation to the issue of racism. Set within the confines of a typical Cowboy-Indian feud, this film uses the concept of “home” to explore what it means to belong to something, or to be on the inside of it. The film eventually uses key character development through cinematographic techniques to allow viewers to understand how the lines between outside and inside can be blurred. One of the most notable cinematographic characteristics of The Searchers...

...Throughout John Ford’s, The Searchers, Ford constantly demonstrates conflict surrounding Ethan with his personal reliance and ideas in comparison to those of society. Ethan is displayed as rugged, brave, but also barbarous as he seeks revenge against the Comanche who killed his family and kidnapped his niece. But though Ethan seems to contrast the typical countryman with his lack of love for society, he truly epitomizes the ideal American in his loyalty to family, bravery, and drive to reach his goals. Ford’s demonstration of Ethan as this image of American identity demonstrates that the realities of American ideals aren’t as perfect as they are made out to be. Though in the end of the film Ethan does in fact save Debbie against his previous...

..."What's in a name? Misidentifying the Debtor under Revised Article 9. This article addresses the harsh penalties imposed on a creditor for incorrectly naming a debtor entity on a financing statement. As you might expect, misidentifying a debtor on a financing statement can mean the difference between having a secured claim and an unsecured claim. However, what you might not expect is the degree of error necessary to render a financing statement “seriously misleading” under revised Uniform Commercial Code §9-506, thereby rendering it ineffective. The new legal standard, coupled with strict search logic standards being adopted by filing offices are making it much easier to challenge the perfection of a security interest on the basis of minor errors in the debtor’s name. So… "What's in a name? Well, when trying to perfect a security interest under Revised Article 9, “that which we call a rose by any other name definitely does not smell as sweet." INTRO: [PMSI] In today’s economy, selling unsecured on open account may carry significant risk for vendors. However, taking a security interest in the merchandise sold may reduce or eliminate such risk. This type of security interest, called a purchase money security interest or "PMSI", is the most common and important secured transaction under article 9. To obtain a valid PMSI, the debtor must first execute a security agreement giving the vendor a security interest in described merchandise. Then, the vendor perfects...

...field is overgrown, a grid search is a good search to utilize. When a field is overgrown, the searches may have to crawl on their hands and knees to locate any evidence and perform a thorough search. A grid line search consists of searchers following a line pattern and then following another line pattern that is perpendicular to the first line pattern (Lee, Palmbach, & Miller, 2001). The grid search pattern is a good search to utilize because it allows two different searchers, or the same searcher, to search the same area twice. Therefore, the searchers a more likely not to miss any evidence that needs to be collected. A con to the grid line search is that it is very time consuming and if the boundaries to be searched are not well established, than the search will not be very thorough (Lee, Palmbach, & Miller, 2001). The grid line search was chosen for this scenario because a thorough search can be accomplished by having two different searchers look over the same area. If one searcher missed evidence that could be pertinent to the case, the other searcher is likely to notice the missed evidence. Another search pattern that would be very effective in this type of scenario would be a line search. During a line search, searchers walk arm lengths apart from one end of the scene to the other end, move a little farther from where they just walked, and walk back toward the other...

The guard takes a position a few paces to the rear of the line with his weapon ready. The search starts with the person on the right end of the line. Upon completing the search of the first individual, the searcher moves that individual to the left end of the line, the individual assumes the proper position against the wall. The searcher resumes with the individual now on the right end of the line. The searcher must be careful to approach and search the remaining individuals without coming between them and the guard. 2. Frisk Search. This is a quick search of an individual for weapons, evidence, or contraband. Conduct the search in the presence of an assistant (guard) and a witness, when available. In conducting the frisk search, the searcher positions himself to prevent possible endangerment. The searcher’s guard takes a position from which he can cover the individual with his weapon. The searcher must avoid moving between the guard and the searched individual. The searched individual must raise his arms above his head. The searcher slides his hands over the individual’s entire body, crushing the clothing to locate concealed objects. If the searched is carrying a bag or wearing a coat or hat, these are also searched, with special attention to the linings. 3. Female Search. Women should search other females whenever possible. ...Catholic Imagination in Film [ 4/3/2013 ] A Style of His Own John Ford is without a doubt one of the greatest film makers to have ever lived. This can be made evident by the long celebration of his work since the time it was made till now. His works have brought about feelings of both joy and sorrow and have been the focal point for many arguments about human nature and right versus wrong. It is through Ford’s use of imagery as well as his characters actions that we are able to see that he has a Sacramental image of the world that he wishes to share with his audience. Ford uses his view of the world to deliver messages he has learned in his life to his audience through his films. Ford tries to let his audience see that some widely accepted ideas of his time were not quite correct about both people of different religions, and ethnicities. The Sacramental imagination as we understand it today can be compared to a Christian’s outlook on life. This so called imagination, or way of thought simply means that God and Heaven are present here on Earth. Ford, as many others do, believed that the world is at its core, a good and moral place that is just in need of guidance. He did not believe that we were all pre-destined or that the world was basically evil like the dialectical imagination would have us believe, but instead that God guides us along our way and is involved in everything we do. Ford’s belief in the Sacramental imagination can be accredited to both his...

He also talks about the two special colonies, which are Singapore and Hong Kong. Another thing that is discussed in this book is the International Monetary Fund. Easterly also discussed the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and what you have to do if you want to aid the poor. Easterly tells us that the poorest people in the world have no money to motivate the market searchers to meet their desperate needs. The planners have good intentions but they do not motivate anyone to carry them out. The searchers find things...

...Federated Searching: A New Era “Only librarians like to search; everyone else likes to find” (Tennant, 2003). While most librarians teach research strategies including: Boolean logic, accessing carefully chosen databases, and indexing; students are often discouraged and frustrated using these techniques. Most students simply want to Google their requests. For many students a simple keyword search is a convenient, simple process for locating information. Federated searching is providing options that may strike a happy medium for students and librarians alike by providing a keyword option to access the library’s databases. Federated searching is software or a service that allows multiple sources to be searched simultaneously. A library is required to purchase software and/or a service agreement from a vendor that provides access to information in the databases and on the Web. Using a search protocol, like Z39.50, the engine scans various databases, the Web, and library catalogs concurrently and provides an organized result for the searcher’s query. Metasearches are performed across both bibliographic and full-text databases. One major advantage of a federated search is that the query does not have to be repeated with various databases. When federated searching works well, it reduces the amount of time students spend locating data and encourages them to search for more information. “The goal of many federated search tools is to make the interface as simple and streamlined...
