A Comedy in One Act vs. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Gender roles and marriage have been stereotyped for thousands of years. The man earned a living while the woman stayed home did the cooking and laundry and raised the children. Today, however, roles have reversed in many households. Men stay home and take care of the children, do the cooking, and run the errands while the wife earns the income. The main points of these stories shows the dynamics love within their marriage but in different way; both woman share common bond of tolerance, for their significant other when it comes to the lack of certain things in their marriage. One of the first similarities of the two stories I notice was the fact that both of the men wives was extremely concerned about their significant others well being. Leon Avelino and Barry Matthews readily acknowledge that they are kids in grown-up bodies with real day jobs (Avelino works for Sports Illustrated and Matthews is an accountant for an e-commerce firm) who happen to love comic books and their latest incarnation, graphic novels. Their love for comics in all forms—along with the desire to start their own business—led them to found Secret Acres, a comic book and graphic novel publisher based in New York City. Over the course of events in The Great Gatsby, Tom and Gatsby show many traits that are similar and many traits that are different. In the end, Gatsby learns his lesson about the emptiness of pursuing happiness through wealth. Throughout The Great Gatsby, there are lies, secrets and indiscretion. Tom and Gatsby both share these traits. Both men lie, hold onto secrets and have indiscretion about their lives and what they do for work. “Tom’s got some woman in New York” (15). Tom shows his indiscretion through his secrets and lies about his affair. The other characters are aware of Tom’s affair, but he still manages to lie to them and go behind Daisy’s back to see his mistress. Tom also says “We’re getting off, I want you to meet my girl” (24). Tom’s “girl”, as referred to in this quote, is actually his mistress. This example again shows Tom’s indiscretion, secrets, and lies. Gatsby is also secretive. I enjoyed reading A Secret Sorrow more than “The Sorrowful Woman” due to the fact that I was able to somewhat feel what Godwin’s unnamed wife was feeling. I responded to the characters in an emotional way. I found myself able to sympathize with both Faye and Godwin’s unnamed wife. They both have very deep issues, but being a mother myself, makes me have more empathy for Faye.
