He doesn’t show any pity for him and he enjoys watching other sinners tear him apart. Dante says, “A little after that, I saw such havoc. Made of him by the people of the mire, That still I praise and thank my God for it.” (Inferno, Canto VIII: 60-63) He is thanking god that his enemy is being punished which shows he is no longer showing pity, sympathy, or relating with these sinners. A key turning point when Dante begins to show spiritual growth is in canto 23, sixth pouch, 8th circle, filled with hypocrisy. Virgil has a more limited view of Christianity because he is a Pagan. Beatrice has saved Dante and his triumph over Virgil is symbolic of Christianity over paganism. Dante rises above temptation and Satan himself when Dante and Virgil climb down the legs of Lucifer to reach the base of Purgatory. ...Alighieri’s version of Hell describes all of the punishments of those condemned, in accord with their sin. On entering Hell, Dante and Virgil read a sign, describing the horrors of hell and that there is no escape. “Through me you enter the city of woes… Abandon all hope ye who enter here.” (Dante Inferno Canto III) As they travel through Hell they see all of the various punishments for the condemned. They find that each sinner is condemned to a punishment that is in relation with his or her sin. For example, the Misers and the Spendthrifts are in Circle IV. Their sins were that they worshipped money so much that they hoarded it, or had so little regard for money that they spent it wildly. Nothing is so loathed to a miser as a spendthrift. So, their punishment is to bombard each other continually with huge stones expressing the antagonism between excessive hoarding and excessive squandering. Another example is the punishment of the Thieves, their hands, which they used to steal, are cut off and their bodies are entwined with snakes or serpents. As she reveals her intentions of murdering King Duncan to her husband, Lady Macbeth persuades Macbeth with veiled talk and double entendre as an effort to sugarcoat the scheme: “Look like th’innocent flower / But be the serpent under’t” (1.5.60-61). Macbeth does not refuse her statement, but remains non-committal and replies, “We will speak further” (1.5.67). The metaphor of the evil serpent hiding under a beautiful, pure flower parallels to Lady Macbeth’s desire for Macbeth to appear innocent and harmless as a flower, but remembering their regicide plot. Another factor is that Lady Macbeth does not say the word ‘murder’. Instead, she conceals her violent ideas, and simply mentions how King Duncan will not see the sun rise the next day. ...The Garuda Purana This is a translation of an abridged version of the Garuda Purana. The Garuda Purana is one of the Vishnu Puranas. It is in the form of a dialog between Vishnu and Garuda, the King of Birds. The second section of this Purana (given here) deals with issues connected with death, particularly funeral rites and the metaphysics of reincarnation. Portions of the Garuda Purana are used by some Hindus as funeral liturgy. Indeed, some consider it unlucky to read this text except during funerals. Of interest are the intermediate states between birth and rebirth, which roughly correspond to the western concepts of Hell and Heaven. Since this was written during the medieval era, it is possible that the writer of this text had contact with Christianity. Earlier Hindu texts do not elaborate about 'hell' and 'heaven,' at least not to this extent, and the subject is completely absent in the oldest texts. Here, the torments of Hell are described in terms that would not be out of place in a Baptist revival tent (or Dante, for that matter). In addition, the four-square city of Yama, the God of Death, is reminiscent of the heavenly city in Revelation.
