Abstract The service concept plays a key role in service design and development. But while the term is used frequently in the service design and new service development literature, surprisingly little has been written about the service concept itself and its important role in service design and development. The service concept defines the how and the what of service design, and helps mediate between customer needs and an organization’s strategic intent. We define the service concept and describe how it can be used to enhance a variety of service design processes. As illustrations here, we apply the service concept to service design planning and service recovery design processes. Employing the service concept as an important driver of service design decisions raises a number of interesting questions for research which are discussed here. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Port Service Quality Concept Theoretical Determinants

...PORT SERVICE QUALITY CONCEPT THEORETICAL DETERMINANTS Port service quality may be defined as a product or service that satisfies customer requirements and expectations. According to the Advances project, to secure a quality port service means to secure a service in a reliable, safe, competitive and environment-friendly manner in accordance with customer requirements and the lowest possible level of risks for life, environment, and property. The enhancement of competitiveness, safety, and higher level of port environment protection calls for introduction of a port service quality concept, based on clearly defined term denoting quality, precisely determined requirements the port is required to meet on the market, port basic functions (operational areas), identification of stakeholders and their requirements, and bottle-necks and problems most frequently encountered in port operations. The complexity of the port service quality concept ensues from principal features of services themselves (intangibility, heterogeneity, and inseparability of production from consumption), from the complexity of the port service process of production, as well as from the large number of stakeholders taking part in service production and subjective approach to the understanding of quality. Service quality may be defined from two aspects: the organization-based aspect and the customer-based aspect. Whereas from the organization-based aspect service quality is the basic requirement characterized by...

Marketing

...1. The Service Concept: Just like production, service industry is also a vast plot that has its own keen interests and points, though different from production processes but equally important. Similar to production, services also have procedures, and each of them must have to be done properly, at right time and with right care. And these steps, procedures, follow ups need to be defined and recorded properly by the service providers. And here the term helpful, is THE SERVICE CONCEPT. The service concept actually defines the service design, it’s basics, it’s how and what, and helps intervene between an organization’s strategic plan and the customer’s needs. It’s a roadmap which shows an organization’s strategy of winning the customers while leading to its own goals. Service concept is an easy way of defining an organizations strategic plan that also considers customers’ needs. As defined by Edvardsson and Olsson (1996) “The service concept is used to know and investigate the nature of service within or outside the service organization”. The service concept is not limited to marketing or operations of services, but it also highlights its functional divisions and gives a detailed view of the service management. If applied properly, the service concept can be used as a tool to incorporate the different sides of a service organization together. It’s a prototype of what is to be done for customers and how are the organizational goals to be achieved. There are many important decisions...

Finnish Project Management Championships 2010

...Finnish Project Management Championships 2010 Technical case Case OleanTek: scheduling, resourcing and costs for a new service business launch project OleanTek is a medium-sized technology-based firm with its core business in equipment and system deliveries for large engineering industry clients. Its three strategic customers have increasingly requested maintenance services after the actual equipment and system deliveries, and these services have so far been carried out by the side of other duties by the technical staff. OleanTek’s leaders have noticed that maintenance could be implemented also in the form of more strategic service business that could complement the company’s offering and generate important benefits to other customers, too. OleanTek has decided to invest in a new service business launch project to plan and test four basic service concepts concurrently: corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance, spare parts service, and modernization. The project starts with delimiting the service offering and ends with planning the broader service launch process; the actual marketing and broader launch of new services are excluded from the project. Paul Lander, the maintenance manager, has been selected as project manager for the project. He is well acquainted with OleanTek and its clientele already. Paul has noticed that it is very difficult to plan the project with detail as most of the tasks include a lot of uncertainty due to their ambiguous content and novelty and...

...feature and showing them the pros and cons. But when it involves selling a concept which hardly has anything tangible to show it turns out to be more troublesome. First understanding what a concept selling process is and then we understand it through an example of a concept called FTWZ (Free trade warehousing Zone) Concept Selling- A type of marketing that uses the idea that consumers left to their own devices are unlikely to purchase a particular product. The concept selling approach is often advanced by a business as a justification for being especially aggressive in their marketing campaigns to promote sales. Concept selling is simply taking a product and selling it on the basis of an idea, making it more palatable to the customer. It is painting a word picture to the prospect, letting them visualize a certain situation. Concept selling vs Product selling. So what is the big difference ! “The number one thing when using Concept selling vs Product selling is that it creates a form of communication that gets the prospects attention. You are communicating an idea that makes more sense for your prospect to understand and relate to. In other words, it becomes more palatable to the prospect.” FTWZ- Fee trade warehousing Zone A Free Trade & Warehousing Zones (FTWZ) is a special category of Special Economic Zones with a focus on trading and warehousing. ...Improved Matchmaking Algorithm for Semantic Web Services Based on Bipartite Graph Matching Umesh Bellur, Roshan Kulkarni Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology, IIT Bombay umesh@it.iitb.ac.in, roshan@it.iitb.ac.in Abstract The ability to dynamically discover and invoke a Web Service is a critical aspect of Service Oriented Architectures. An important component of the discovery process is the matchmaking algorithm itself. In order to overcome the limitations of a syntax-based search, matchmaking algorithms based on semantic techniques have been proposed. Most of them are based on an algorithm originally proposed by M. Paolucci, et al. [21]. In this paper, we analyze this original algorithm and identify some correctness issues with it. We illustrate how these issues are an outcome of the greedy approach adopted by the algorithm. We propose a more exhaustive matchmaking algorithm, based on the concept of matching bipartite graphs, to overcome the problems faced with the original algorithm. We analyze the complexity of both the algorithms and present performance results which show that our algorithm performs as well as the original. 1 Introduction Loose Coupling is an important principle underlying Service Oriented Architectures. One aspect of loose coupling is the ability to invoke a service provider with little (or no) prior knowledge about it. The publish-find-bind architecture is intended to facilitate this process. Service providers create WSDL [9] descriptions and...
