...Depression: Silent killer Miriam Webster’s dictionary definition of the word depression is “a psychotic disorder marked by sadness, inactivity, and difficulty in thinking and concentration”. More than 21 million people in America suffer from this disorder. It is the cause of disabilities, illnesses, (such as insomnia, chronic pain and cancer), more than 30,000 million suicides in the U.S each year and is responsible for lost productive time owing to about $31 billion per year. According to studies, depression is found mostly in people between the ages of 15-44. Those suffering from depression report having felt guilty, alone, and worthless in a days event. It leaves those suffering with an impaired concentration, indecisiveness and restlessness. Amongst these many symptoms, depression may also cause a loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, such as spending time with loved ones, extracurricular activities and even sex, overeating or appetite loss and thoughts of suicide or attempts at suicide. Depression is a chronic disorder that over 20 million Americans face daily. It is a quiet illness and a silent killer. Depression is consuming and though treatable, many people are found victims to this disorder. It is a disability than can be cured and conquered, yet many find the idea of receiving help for such an issue “ludicrous” or “ridiculous”. Treatments include psychosocial treatment and medication. However, less than half of those suffering receive proper...

...countries have more then what is needed, people still suffer from poverty. Poverty is a lack of goods and services necessary to maintain a minimal life style. However, in 3rd world countries poverty is more present then in 1st world countries because of the lack of resources, power, money, and education. The struggle to survive often results in having more children, however, people in poverty usually are not educated about safe sex practices. As a consequence, sexually transmitted diseases run rapidly. When the parents are HIV positive, HIV is passed to their newborns and the cycle of death by AIDS rages. Not only is diseases a problem but the causes it brings to families, children and the country as a whole. The reality is poverty is a silent killer that is ignored by most especially by the 1st world countries. They tend to ignore other countries and not try to put an end to poverty. There is about six billion people in the world as of 2012, and from that half of the population are suffering from poverty (Anup Shah). Which brings us to the question, Is there ever going to be an end to poverty? From research I have made poverty has been present to back to centuries even before BC and is still happening today. We would think that poverty would be decreasing as the years progress, because of special programs we are establishing and the changes made, but little do we know we are still having issues due to the population getting larger jobs are decreasing, gas is expensive, and everything...

...“Long-term use of alcohol can affect virtually every organ system of the body”. (Sick! 9) Physically, alcohol crushes the human body by reducing the amount of white blood cells in the body which weakens the immune system, increasing the heart’s overall size and abating the heart muscles which all creates abnormal heartbeats and murmurs, and the most common issue is liver cirrhosis which is from alcohol interfering with the livers chemical reactions that take place to keep a human body functioning and alive. (Sick! 10-13) Constant alcohol abuse can result in heaps of problems like poor nutrition, memory disorders, blood clotting, and reproductive problems. (Sick 2) Alcohol is proven to give malnutrition and other types of disorders while destroying the body. When alcohol enters the body it is rapidly absorbed by the stomach which then distributes it to the rest of the body through the bloodstream. The substance is then broken down into acetaldehyde which can cause very painful reactions inside the body and is usually what causes most of diseases and disorders inside the human body. (Alcoholism 5) Most of the other main ways alcohol affects the body are classified into four different groups, “Craving, Loss of Control, Physical Dependence, and Tolerance. ...Addiction Among College Students Kniecolle Brown Comm/156 Amy Leedy 08/24/13 The abuse of illicit drugs is affecting students on campuses causing addiction at colleges and universities all across the globe. Students attend colleges and universities all over the world, and arrive at these institutions with preconceived notions about studies, social activities, and new found freedom. Ironically, these elements, if not embraced maturely, often exacerbate underlying stressors that adversely affect students. Thus, the independence in which students find themselves, if not dealt with responsibly, can lead to addictions and other destructive behaviors, such as, late night partying, poor grades, and subsequently dropping out of school altogether. With the arrival of new students’ peer pressure to fit in can be an adequate reason for the student deciding to indulge in drugs and alcohol, as a way of acceptance into a group. There are many reasons that college students continue to drink and use drugs. Some may do it because of the pressure to fit in while gathering sociably, while others may see it as the cool thing to do. There is also the misconception...

...An Assessment of Feminism fighting violence and pornography Feminism, and the lack of equality for women when compared to men, was the key subject throughout the readings in WC2001. Feminists have fought for equality over a long period of time, and women’s rights have improved in many poignant areas. Unfortunately, a lack of knowledge concerning women’s history is letting the new generation’s views be warped by the media concerning the advancements feminism has successfully made for women throughout the world. However, even now, women are still disadvantaged, especially concerning domestic violence and the sex industry, where men are dominating women and enjoying all the benefits, while the women involved, suffer. Feminism has fought hard against such inequalities for the women’s sake, but now it is time for the men to stand up and fight too. The word “Feminist” brings many mixed reactions throughout society; it has been these reactions that have shaped people’s views towards joining a progressing women’s movement, which is bent on bringing equality for ladies everywhere. Before I started WC2001 I was one of those people who viewed feminism as a negative movement. My views were not based on any actual knowledge, but shaped by my society and the media. My lack of education in women’s history prevented me from addressing feminist views critically and most importantly, accurately. This lack of knowledge, which is commonly found throughout society, makes it easy for the media...

...Aggressive Leadership and the Effects on the Employee The manner in which leaders communicate with employees is an essential topic for organizations to recognize. Communication approaches that leaders apply towards junior employees vary in style, tone, and delivery. The literature review for this research will examine aggressive communication approaches that leaders utilize towards subordinate employees and the effect they have on the organization. The aim of this research is to gain an empirical insight to implications of the inter- and intra-personal relationships within the workplace. Aggressive communication according to Infante (1995) refers to the involvement of one individual (sender) applying force to influence another individual (receiver). In addition, abusive supervision is viewed as a significant source of psychological distress according to Restubog, Scott, and Zagenczyk (2011). The mode of communicative aggression varies from one person to another and is considered a behavioral script based on previous encounters in their lifetime. The interpretational and behavioral scripts a person brings to social situations influences that person’s preparedness for aggression (Huesmann, 1988). Communication is displayed through verbal and non-verbal means and is requisite in organizations where two or more employees have to interface either in person or remote from each other. Aggressive communication utilized by leadership breaks down the ability for the healthy ebb...

...goal. A terrorist is a dangerous person with weapons and has the motive to kill people. We, as an American, may view a terrorist as unthinking, immoral, brutal, murderous and in a way, not a human; but a monster. How could we view a terrorist in any other way? A moral American would never think of acting in such a way as a terrorist would, right? But a terrorist is indeed a human. A terrorist could be a man, woman or even a child. A living, breathing person with views that may be quite different than that of our own views. A person who may not see what we view as a terrorist act, but as a belief that may have been taught from birth. One of these terrorists you will be learning about is Ayaan Hirsi Ali, “Somali-Dutch feminist and atheist activist, writer and politician who is known for her views critical of Islam. She wrote the screenplay for Theo van Gogh's movie Submission, for which she criticized the treatment of women in the Islamic society and “Juxtaposed with passages from the Qur'an were scenes of actresses portraying Muslim women suffering abuse.” (Voices on Antisemtisim). After which she and the director both received death threats, and the director was murdered by an Islamic extremist. The daughter of the Somali politician and opposition leader Hirsi Magan Isse, she is a founder of the women's rights organization the AHA Foundation.”(theahafoundation.org). Ayaan Hirsi Ali is not a terrorist of The United States of America, but of her own country. Ayaan Hirsi Ali was...

F rom the villages of Sudan to the factories, sweatshops and brothels of India and South Asia, slavery and human trafficking still flourish. Some 27 million people worldwide are held in some form of slavery, forced prostitution or bonded labor. Some humanitarian groups buy captives’ freedom, but critics say that only encourages slave traders to seize more victims. Meanwhile, nearly a million people Abducted from her village in southern Sudan when she was 6 years old, Akuac Malong was enslaved in northern Sudan until she was freed at age 13. are forcibly trafficked across international borders annually and held in captivity. Even in the United States, thousands of women and children from overseas are forced to become sex workers. ...THE MARTIAN CHILD by David Gerrold Toward the end of the meeting, the caseworker remarked, "Oh - and one more thing. Dennis thinks he's a Martian." "I beg your pardon?" I wasn't certain I had heard her correctly. I had papers scattered all over the meeting room table - thick piles of stapled incident reports, manila-foldered psychiatric evaluations, Xeroxed clinical diagnoses, scribbled caseworker histories, typed abuse reports, bound trial transcripts, and my own crabbed notes as welclass="underline" Hyperactivity. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Emotional Abuse. Physical Abuse. Conners Rating Scale. Apgars. I had no idea there was so much to know about children. For a moment, I was actually looking for the folder labeled Martian. "He thinks he's a Martian," Ms. Bright repeated. She was a small woman, very proper and polite. "He told his group home parents that he's not like the other children - he's from Mars - so he shouldn't be expected to act like an Earthling all the time." "Well, that's okay," I said, a little too quickly. "Some of my best friends are Martians. He'll fit right in. As long as he doesn't eat the tribbles or tease the feral Chtorran." By the narrow expressions on their faces, I could tell that the caseworkers weren't amused. For a moment, my heart sank. Maybe I'd said the wrong thing. Maybe I was being too facile with my answers. The hardest thing about adoption is that you have to ask someone to trust you with a child. That means that you have to be willing to...
