The curative nature of relationships to revalidate and renourish an individual’s sense of belonging through personal growth is featured in the verse novel The Simple Gift (2000) by Steven Herrick, Lasse Hallstrom’s film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993) and Mitch
Albom’s prose fiction, For One More Day (2006). The texts endorse the remedial impact of positive relationships in bearing fruition to the individual’s familial and social belonging through a validation of their self worth.
In The Simple Gift, Billy and Caitlyn escape familial turmoil and superficiality for genuine relationships, whilst Old Bill’s new found friendships and reconciliation with his traumatised past witnesses the remedial impact of relationships upon the individual’s esteem and belonging. In “The Hobo Hour”, Billy’s rekindled faith encourages …show more content…
Here, negative connotations from the aural kinaesthetic imagery “bottle crash…” and the visual imagery “morning/but still dark”, metaphorically conceptualises the emotional penumbra between Billy and Old
Bill. Yet, the juxtaposition with “the sunrise/sharing the hobo hour”, infers a sense of unity and belonging, through positive connotations and alliteration, founded upon a growing and authentic bond between the Billy and Old Bill. This is abetted by the reciprocated friendship, acting to validate and nourish each other’s self value and sense of belonging.
In the exposition, Old Bill’s acceptance of his past and personal growth is fostered through the positive encouragement of Billy’s and Caitlyn’s friendship, exemplifying the hope for a renourished sense of self through belonging. Here, he orchestrates a rejection of his pained past with visual simile “my memory/flickered and grew dim/like the cigarette” coupled with personified metaphor and tactile imagery of “in the cold night

Analysis Of James N. Davidson's Misunderstood

...down-to-earth explanation. The sex trade was a business like any other, and its workers supplemented their incomes by making textiles. The vase paintings represent the moment at which they turn from their day job to their night job. These are not matters of antiquarian curiosity. The connotations of opsophagos tell us something about how the Greeks thought of pleasure. In some ways, they were strikingly unluxurious. Unlike a Roman banquet, Greek dining did not involve elaborate preparation, exotic ingredients or costly plate; Athenians did not go in for conspicuous consumption in the sense made famous by Thorstein Veblen. The spindles on vases show us economic realities that art might glamorize. Above all, Davidson engages in a careful analysis of words the Greeks used for people whom they considered morally and sexually contemptible, because he is in revolt against a widespread theory of Greek sexual politics advocated by Michel Foucault and supported by an odd alliance of feminists and scholars of more traditional bent. This theory sees the Greeks' sexual ethics -- and their ethics more generally -- in terms of power and the ''reign of the phallus.'' Sexual relations are viewed as a kind of zero-sum game played between dominator and dominated. In homosexual intercourse, the shameful thing is to be penetrated. Women are subjugated by the sexual act; this is why they are so often seen bending over in Greek representations of sexual intercourse. Davidson sweeps all this away. He...

Reward and Recognition Programs for Effective Tqm

...Alignment of Reward and Recognition Programs with Organizational Strategies for Effective Total Quality Management Quality Function Management and TQM April 10, 2009 Total Quality Management (TQM) as a management philosophy emphasizes the importance of meeting and exceeding customer (internal or external) expectations through the continuous quality improvements. To achieve competitive advantage, total quality organizations develop and establish goals, plans, and policies. Employees are internal customers of organizations, the efforts of which are directed towards meeting the expectations of external customers (Chang, 2005). Employees are valuable assets of organizations whose knowledge, skills, and performance impact the overall performance and success of organizations (Boon et al., 2007). Studies have demonstrated that in the era of globalization, increasing competition, and re-organization, employees not only work for gaining profits but also search for organizations that acknowledge and celebrate their achievements and efforts (Campbell-Allen, Houston & Mann, 2008). The data from “World at Work” surveys has demonstrated that being dissatisfied with employers, in 2003, approximately one-third of employees were considering other jobs while by early 2007, over 54% of employees were poised to leave for other job alternatives (Huff, 2007). P. B. Crosby stated that “people really don’t work for money. They go to work for it, but once the salary has been established...

The Impact Of Ecofeminism

...There is little action; rather there is a call for concern and involvement in crucial issues. Leila Brammer says that “Ecofeminists do participate in the formation of ideology and recruitment in that, conferences and books are explicitly for the development and spread of ecofeminist thought. The message has spread . . . But, Ecofeminism has not resulted in collective action in a way Black Power as a philosophy did . . . Rhetorical analysis is the key to understanding phenomena like ecofeminism because their manifestation is rhetorical( Brammer 1-2). In phenomena like Ecofeminism ideology and meaning are more important than structure. People use new words or attribute new meaning to old words in order to express their thoughts and feelings, thus exhibiting a consciousness of their environment in the meanings. One’s feelings fuse with the symbols and images which carry the feeling in communication and sustain it over time. One is led into a pshychodramatic fantasy world, in which meaning in present, reality becomes clearer and involves others with similar...
