“The Untold Story Of The Smith Street Band: Wil Wagner’s Journey Through Depression To Triumph” is a 2017 article published in Sydney based independent magazine ‘The Brag” written by music journalist David James Young. The article is the latest of three public interviews between Young and Wagner. The earliest of these is the fourth episode of Young’s podcast ‘All My Friends Are In Bar Bands’ in 2015 which explored the band’s development, rising popularity and recording of their first three records. The second interview, 2016’s “The Smith Street Band’s Wil Wagner: Just don’t treat people like shit” for FasterLouder magazine which explored Wagner’s opinions of social media as well as his political activism (after the release of the single released …show more content…
The article begins with Young subtly describing what is a miserable setting – the empty and raining campus of The University of Wollongong, inside an empty bar as Young watches Wagner sound check for his solo gig that night. Young continues to describe the scene in unusually specific detail, as he describes Wagner ‘sighing’ the lyrics of Rowland S. Howard’s early song ‘Shivers’ and quoting its lyrics, “I’ve been contemplating suicide/but it really doesn’t suit my style…”. The article effectively uses the figure of Rowland S. Howard, who was a cult icon that rose to fame in Melbourne band The Boys Next Door (later known as The Birthday Party) with Nick Cave, by drawing comparison between him and Wagner – comparing their respective ‘miserable’ lyrical for example. This feature of Young’s writing, comparing Wagner to Rowland. S Howard, is effective in emphasising the purpose of drawing attention to issues of mental …show more content…
One method that Young employs to achieve this is including multiple accounts from fans of Wagner. One fan that is featured in the article is Jackson Mills, who at the Newcastle show had met Wagner and showed him his new Smith Street Band tattoo and described Wagner as being “stoked…that something he had done was now on (Mills) permanently”, Wagner tells another similar story in which a guy ‘burst into tears’ the second he saw him and he told Young how he appreciative he was of being able to connect with people in such a meaningful way and says that he would do the same thing if he met Bruce Springsteen. Another way in which Wagner becomes relatable to the readers, particularly as Brag Magazine has a predominantly Sydney based readership. Wagner talks about how vital Sydney has been to The Smith Street Band’s career and lists a number of venues they have played throughout their career including Black Wire Records, the Townie, the Sando, the Annandale and the Metro – the inclusion of this section plays to the readers of the magazine as he mentions some of the most recognisable venues in Sydney, which allows for Wagner to engage with the readers on a personal level so he can eventually talk about the main issue the article addresses - mental

...Alisa Ali Dr. Jennifer Gliere Introduction to Music 5 December 2016 Final Project: Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” Journey is an American rock and roll band that was formed in 1973. It consists of guitarist and backing vocalist Neal Schon, bass player and backing vocalist Ross Valory, keyboard player and backing vocalist Jonathan Cain, drummer Steve Smith, and finally the leading vocalist Arnel Pineda (The Band). The band’s first album was released in 1975 but it was not a big hit. The following seven albums were not so lucky either. “After 1978, when big-voiced, feather-haired lead singer Steve Perry joined Journey, the group became a dominant force in what’s sometimes derisively referred to as “corporate rock”” (Murray). Hence, many contend...

Research Narrative- Kurt Cobain

...Narrative “Okay, so I get to wake up today and have another day he doesn’t.”- Dave Grohl, band member of Nirvana What would music have been like in the 1990s without Kurt Cobain? Or maybe the question to ask is, “What would music be like today if Kurt Cobain was alive?” The grunge movement was brought to life by the front man of the band Nirvana, Kurt Cobain (Kurt and Courtney). He was what most believed to be an iconic man in the 1990s for the music genre known as alternative rock/grunge. Kurt Cobain passed away on April 5th, 1994, in his home, when he was only 27 years old (“April 05”). He recently started a family with his wife Courtney Love, who was also a musician in a band called Hole (Kurt and Courtney). Kurt was in and out of rehabilitation centers for his drug addiction, and soon before his death had, what people considered at the time, an accidental overdose in Rome. The day his corpse was found an electrician reports his findings. The police and fire department arrive. Pictures are taken of the scene, and then handed to detectives to enhance the report of the incident that took place on the street of Lake Washington Boulevard. As news spreads of the musician’s tragedy fans gather at his house and a memorial service is performed in his honor (Kurt and Courtney). I now tell you the story of how and when Kurt Donald Cobain’s body was found. An electrician, Gary Smith, from the company Veca Electric arrives at the lavish home of Kurt Cobain, as previously scheduled...

The Harlem Renaissance

...Selisha Landry HUM 2425 Professor Love-Hartman June 6, 2011 The Harlem Renaissance – An Era of Great Change The music, clubs, sports, fashions, and people all together with change, composed together created a movement of power and control for blacks in the northern Manhattan neighborhood of Harlem. Life in Harlem wasn’t your average Southern hospitality. It was filled with excitement and fun. Any two A.M. morning was a simple 12 P.M. afternoon. The streets were blazing with jazz, dance, and people on their way to dance clubs, jobs, or simply roaming the streets to enjoy what Harlem had to offer. Clubs were the main attraction. That went for both blacks and whites. Young whites were entertained with the new style of music rather than the traditional music they listened to with parents who disapproved of “Harlem Music.” Two of the most famous black clubs in Harlem were the Cotton Club and Renaissance Casino and Ballroom. The Cotton Club was a place of great entertainment, featuring three stage shows nightly with anyone from Billie Holiday to Cab Calloway, all the way to Duke Ellington. The club was originally owned by a black icon, then sold to Jack Johnson, a famous black heavyweight champion. He later sold the club to Owney Madden- a mobster of Harlem. A major part of its’ popularity was because many white patrons wanted to see the infamous Owney Madden and Al Capone. Another reason for its’ popularity was when CBS began broadcasting in the Cotton Club in...

Blues vs. Country Music

...Blues vs Country music According to Etta James in an interview with American Chronicle: "The Blues and country are first cousins ... What I look for in a song is for the story to be for real. I like a blood and guts kind of thing. That's what you find in the lyrics of country music." Blues and country music both developed in the 19th century in the Southern United States. They share a similar history. For this reason, they share many of the same musical and lyrical characteristics. Read more: How to Compare Blues & Country Music | eHow.com http://www.ehow.com/how_5888119_compare-blues-country-music.htInstructions 1. * 1 Learn the history behind blues and country music. They are both forms of American folk music influenced by earlier styles brought overseas. Blues music grew out of field hollers and chants sung by African slaves. Irish and Scottish balladeers borrowed the guitar and banjo of blues and thus created "country". According to Reebee Garofalo in "Rockin' Out: Popular Music in the USA", "Terms like country and blues are only used to separate the same kind of music made by blacks and whites ... designations like race and hillbilly intentionally separated artists along racial lines and conveyed the impression that their music came from mutually exclusive sources." Country is an offshoot of blues. They are essentially the same thing. In the PBS special, "Rhythm, Country and Blues," country is referred to as "white man's blues." * 2 Listen to...

She was from a well brought up, hard working family and was one of six children. Her family was very interested in horses and would participate in horse shows while the children were growing up. Rita was an honors student while in high school, landing in the top 20 out of 300 students who were in the National Honors Society (Smith, 2012). Although she graduated high school, Rita did not continue her education. The reason being that while in high school, she landed a part-time job at City Hall. Darlene Herzog, who was Dixon’s comptroller at the time, convinced Rita to stay with City Hall because she caught onto everything so quickly and was a great asset to the team. Through her hard work, Rita was able to advance herself, moving from secretary and then to treasurer. After 12 years of working with City Hall, in 1983, she replaced Darlene Herzog, who had to retire due to health problems. This placed Rita at the top of the financial department of City Hall, being named both the treasurer and the comptroller. It was the start of what would eventually lead her to be taken out of her office in handcuffs almost 30 years later. Dixon is a small town in the northern part of Illinois. In 2005, the video game design studio released Guitar Hero, which subsequently became the fastest video game in history to top $1 billion in North American sales. The game concept focuses around a plastic guitar-shaped controller. Players press colored buttons along the guitar neck to match a series of dots that scroll down the TV in time with music from a famous rock tune, such as the Ramones’ “I Wanna Be Sedated” and Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water.” Players score points based on their accuracy. In November 2007, Harmonix released Rock Band, adding drums, vocals, and bass guitar options to the game. Rock Band has sold over 3.5 million units with a $169 price tag (most video games retail at $50 to $60). In 2006, Harmonix’s founders sold the company to Viacom for $175 million, maintaining their operational autonomy while providing them greater budgets for product development and licensing music for their games. Harmonix’s success, however, did not come overnight.
