The Spaking Debate: Why Spanking Is Good For Children

For years the spanking debate has been a controversial topic. A topic that as the years progress seem to become more and more debatable. Some people argue that spanking is good for children because it teaches them to behave. Others, on the other hand, are strongly against spanking because in the long term it can impact children’s life negatively. On the spanking debate, religion, culture, and education seem to play big roles on whether people believe it is right or wrong to spank their children. Everybody has a different perspective on the spanking debate because everybody has been raised with different morals based on religion, culture and education. Consequently, I will be discussing about two articles, one that argues for spanking and another…show more content… Spanking can lead to many negative consequences in a child’s life such as aggression, depression, behavioral problems, criminal behavior and future relationship abuse (Benjet & Kazdin, 2003). Punishment, such as spanking, teaches children that it is alright to use violence and to hurt others (Benjet & Kazdin 2003). From the research conducted, 94 % of individuals reported having undesirable outcomes due to spanking (Benjet & Kazdin, 2003). A longitudinal study was done on children of different ages and the results showed that spanking increases negative behavior and aggression (Benjet & Kazdin, 2013). There were also other different studies done that showed that children who are spanked are more likely to become a rebellious kid (Benjet & Kazdin). Meaning they are less likely to be obedient and have a good behavior in the short and long term. In a research, a questionnaire was done asking parents how many of them believed spanking their children help improve their children behavior. The results showed that 41% of the parents believed spanking their children was helpful and 65% believe spanking their children was wrong and did not help improve their behavior at all (Benjet & Kazdin). This shows that more parents are against spanking their children because they really do not see a benefit from doing it.
