In today’s modern world, platforms such as the entertainment industry attempt to portray an image of history that they claim to have built on the truth. The truth is that for hundreds of years individuals have cherry-picked the parts of history that they approve of and presented them as facts. Today, the world is presented with limited historical data that does not come close to featuring the truly vast and complicated history of human civilization. Barker, Hanratty, Leuchter and Mand’s The Speedy attempts to cast a shadow of doubt on the general understanding of today’s world on important historical concepts. In The Speedy, ropes are portrayed as a metaphor portraying the structure of history, because the past is made up of the stories and …show more content…
The names of these individuals cannot be found in textbooks. The retelling of history is usually focused around a selected few. People who had an important standing and who were the victors of the cruel game of history. Historians only tell the story of ‘important’ characters in a particular event. In the The Speedy, a simple Google search helped described the way in which historians decided to tell the story of Ogetonicut: “Ogetonicut, drunk like a skunk, boasted that he had killed a white man to revenge his brother’s blood.”(Barker, Hanratty, Leuchter, Mand 24). Historians will never spend much time on Ogetonicut or his side of the story as an essential participant in the murder trial. Unfortunately, he will always be remembered as a drunken murderer while a character like Hunter will have books and plaques dedicated to him. As the play describes: “Of course, with Hunter, there are documents, quotes, pictures. It’s harder with someone like Ogetonicut. There is not much out there.” (Barker, Hanratty, Leuchter, Mand 24). In the metaphorical rope portrayed in the play, Hunter is a bigger and stronger strand than Ogetonicut therefore his story is told in great detail with supporting documents. But without Ogetonicut or the hundreds of thousands of other Aboriginals who were marginalized in the Canadian society, the rope of Canadian history would not be as strong as it is today. Ropes represent the true nature of history in The Speedy. When describing a rope, Keith, one of the characters, states: ”I would think of all the individual pieces of rope that looked all tucked and tangled together to make these huge, thick…I don’t know” (Barker, Hanratty, Leuchter, Mand 12). In describing the characteristics of a rope, Keith realizes the importance of the role that each

...In his memoir, An American Comedy (cowritten with Wesley W. Stout), Harold Lloyd asserts that while growing up “I was average and typical of the time and place.” He continues: “Supposing Atlantic City had been holding Average American Boy contests, with beauty waived, I might have been Master America most any year between 1893 and 1910.” This insistence was not random; it suited someone who doggedly set out to create a type on-screen as close as he could make it to an average specimen—a mirror image of the American audience. The fact that the man who said this was anything but average, a brilliantly gifted physical performer with a genius for constructing comic gags, who moreover understood the film medium with greater sophistication than all but a handful of his peers, speaks to both his modesty and his vanity. It also approaches the mystery of why audiences today may find it harder to connect with Harold Lloyd than they do with, say, Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton. He embodied the spirit of the American dream that any average individual with gumption could attain success, an ideal that still seemed within reach in the twenties, before the Depression, Vietnam, and national disenchantment. Chaplin flirted perennially with pathos, Keaton with melancholy, while Lloyd went his merry way, positive thinking and triumphant. “It’s the optimism,” wrote his defender Richard Griffith, “which chiefly sticks in the highbrow craw and accounts for the continued fundamental lack of interest...

The Big Big Song of Zayn

...DRAFT Eleni introduction… Say age etc.. then.. Eleni is one of my closest best friends and I have known her since year nine. One thing we have in common is that we were born in Greece. That must be one of the things that we mostly like about our friendship because it allows us to talk in Greek when in public avoiding anyone to understand our subject of conversation. I have recently asked her a few questions and found out more about her. Throughout this presentation I will use most of her sentences though edit a few words in order to combine the information given. Three ways Eleni described year 12 is stressful, busy and exiting. She lives here in Australia with her mum, dad, her younger 12 year old sister and the best family member, her dog named Sandy. Both of her parents have full time jobs and her sister is busy with school and her hobby, bouldering (which is similar to rock climbing). Due to these busy weekly programs Eleni does not get much family time because she is also busy with her studies. The closest family member she has is her mom and Sandy, everyone’s favourite dog. The good part about her family is the respect they show each other, Eleni considers this as their family value. Her hobbies involve exercise, going out with friends and watching her favourite series, “Pretty Little Liars”. Two of the bad/strange habits Eleni has is biting her nails when bored or stressed and to take ugly selfies on other people’s phones. One thing she cannot understand is a few things...

Economic R Us- Speedy Limo

...Economics R Us: Consulting Report for Speedy Limo Demand and Supply Fluctuations: Speedy Limo has seen many different supply and demand fluctuations over the past few months. For quite some time the demand for the limo service increased and is seen by the shift to the right on the chart labeled Appendix A. This increase was due to the airport charging more for parking. A substantial amount of customers started using Speedy Limo’s service due to it being more cost effective with the increased parking rates. This demand shift continued until the recent economic issues. During this time of economic hardship, wages and gas prices were increased for Speedy Limo. This made the cost of providing the service to increase. Because of this, Speedy Limo had a decrease in the supply of their services. This can be seen in detail on the chart in Appendix B. Speedy Limo could consider raising their prices to bring the demand and supply back to equilibrium. This could help maintain these large swings in supply and demand. There has been some discussion from the major taxi cabs in the area that they might lower prices. The demand for their service has been on the decline since the limo service has been taking some of their customers of late. Due to the suspected price drop, Speedy Limo has asked us to provide them an overview of how a price drop to these major companies would affect the company’s demand of its service. Build a Speedy Windows 8 Pc with Under $500

...Windows 8’s controversial interface changes and obvious accommodations for mobile hardware may cause die-hard desktop users to approach the new OS with trepidation, Windows 8 offers many enhancements worth an upgrade. First and foremost, Windows 8 is streamlined to perform well on lower-end hardware than its most recent predecessors. Its minimum requirements are similar to Windows 7, but Windows 8 uses less memory, consumes less disk space, and its UI elements aren’t as graphically rich. Windows 8 also leverages most GPUs to accelerate more OS elements in hardware than does Windows 7. All of these changes in Windows 8 culminate in an operating system that simply doesn’t need high-end hardware to run well. Knowing that, we set out to build a speedy Windows 8-ready system for under $500. With such a limited budget, dedicating a significant amount of money to any single component isn’t a possibility. With the right balance though, half a grand should be plenty of cash to put together a nice Windows 8 system with minimal compromise. Choosing our components Let’s get what’s probably going to be the most controversial decision out of the way first: The heart of our sub-$500 Windows 8 system is an AMD A8-3870K APU, or Accelerated Processing Unit (basically a CPU + GPU combo). The 3870K sports a quad-core CPU running at 3.0GHz and an integrated, on-die Radeon HD 6000 series GPU. We chose this APU for a few reasons. First off, even though Intel’s desktop processors offer better overall...

In addition to his income from Fast Talking Ed's, Speedy also has income from rentals of about $15,000 a year. Speedy's wife, Holiday, is employed, earning about $65,000 a year. The cost of the car, and the modifications made to it, cost Speedy about $75,000, which is being depreciated over a fiveyear life (using I.R.C. § 168). Speedy incurred additional expenses for the purchase of small tools, racing supplies, travel costs, etc. In 2008, Speedy begin entering the Spokane auto races. Because his job at Fast Talking Ed's required him to work at least one Saturday every month, Speedy was not able to enter all of the races held in Spokane, but did enter as many as possible. Spokane holds races every weekend from the first part of April through the end of September. Speedy had some success in winning races, but because of the limited number of races Speedy could enter and the limited purse, his gross income was only about $50 the first year, $125 the second year, and $200 the third year. This year (2011) Speedy earned about $500 (gross income) and...

Treason

...Abstract In the Bill of Rights, the Sixth Amendment gives United States citizens many rights, but one right given in the Sixth Amendment is the right to a speedy trial. A speedy trial means that the defendant has to be tried for the crimes the defendant was accused of doing in a reasonable amount of time after the defendant’s arrest. There are four circumstances when trying to find out if the case is following the speedy trial right: length of delay, the reason for the delay, the defendant’s affirmation of his right, and the prejudice to the defendant. The purpose of speedy trial is to set a certain limit on each case based on its complexity and seriousness. The Sixth Amendment: The Right to a Speedy Trial In the Bill of Rights, the Sixth Amendment is “In all criminal prosecutions, the incriminated has the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district where the crime was committed in, which district shall have been previously confirmed by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the incrimination; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense. (Alschuler, Jury: Legal Aspects)” One right that this amendment gives every United States citizen, is the right to a speedy trial. This means that the defendant has to be tried for the stated crimes he was accused of doing within a reasonable amount of time after being arrested...
