When the Spanish first step foot in the America, they saw a vacant and natural landscape intended for the gradual spread of Christianity and European culture. However the spread of European culture and religion would proved more difficult than the spanish had originally thought it would. And this was because the indigenous peoples established a long-lasting resistance against their European settlers. For example, in Chile, when the Spanish attempted to establish a string of fort towns southward, they were meet with the resistance of the Mapuche people. They repeatedly annihilated the settlements of the Spanish empire because they threatened the very existence of the colony. 1 Similarly in Uruguay and Argentina, the Spanish were challenged by

Francisco Pizarro Research Paper

...Spanish and European colonization in the Americas is a big part of our history, and it started with a certain explorer. Francisco Pizarro was an explorer, soldier, and conquistador who explored South America, conquered the Inca Empire, and brought culture and language to the Americas. Francisco Pizarro most notable explorations are those from South America, mostly Peru. His first voyage was in 1513, when he was a soldier. He joined Vasco Núñez de Balboa in his expedition, where he discovered the Pacific Ocean. Later in his life, Francisco wanted to make his own discoveries. So, joined by Diego Almagro, they voyaged to Peru. They then travelled back to Spain to get permission to claim the land of Peru for Spain. Their 1531 expedition, to the Inca Empire, was to find gold, which Pizarro took, much to the Incans dismay....

...The Philippines has gone through different colonization and occupations from other countries. The first to colonize the Philippines is Spain. The next is the United States of America and finally the Japanese occupation occurred. Spanish Colonization in the Philippines After the Spaniards succeeded in 1556 to break the last good organized resistance, a long period of Spanish influence followed.  The Spaniards ruled the country, brought the Christian religion to the country and were responsible for a lot of colonial and religious buildings throughout the country. The results can still be seen in places as for instance Cebu City and Manila. According to them, they colonized us because they wanted to spread Christianity to everyone, which would be like pointing a loaded gun at someone while saying “Let’s be friends” in a really friendly way. And they didn’t waste time doing it. They used God’s awesome might to wow and befriend the people, add some military kapow into the mix and *BOOM!* we’re Spain’s colony before we even knew it. Spain was one of those countries who were thirsty for power. since the Spain was a Catholic country, it was obliged by the pope to convert the natives from places they colonized into Christianity. Columbus And Conquistadors

...The first gallant adventurers of the New World were daring Spaniards. Fueled by the desire of adventure and riches, Spanish explorers and conquistadors spread throughout the newly discovered Americas like wildfire. It all started in 1492 when the Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria shattered through the glass gateway of the Atlantic, which had previously isolated two worlds of people, cultures, and ideas. Christopher Columbus, a Portuguese sailor with a dream of finding an alternate route to India, came to the King and Queen of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella. After finishing their Reconquista of Spain from the Moors, the couple heard him. They shared Columbus’s vision so greatly, that they rejected the advice of their own geographers. Columbus’s three vessels anchored on the shores of an island...

History Midterm

...History 105 Mon-Wed: Midterm March 20, 2013 1. Describe the motivation by Europeans for discovery, exploration and colonization of the Americas. Describe the differences among the countries in their colonization efforts and its affects on the continents? I would like to think that one the first major motivations for Europeans to set for discovery, exploration, and colonization of the Americas was the fact that many people had died and was dying from the plague and fighting internal wars. One would think that out of death, desperation, and rampage; an extreme need to set out to find a better way of life was channeled. However, an increasing demand for the spices, gold, tobacco, expand territory, and silk which the Americas offered, was the first major motivation for European exploration. Obtaining spice was important so that they could season and cover up the flavor of the spoiled and rotten meat that they had to eat. Finding gold was important for wealth and silk was beneficial since it was a lighter material so that their skin was able to breath and for other reasons of vanity. Trade was very important since Europe didn’t have a lot of resources. The European’s natural curiosities about the world beyond Europe also lead to the expansion of trade routes. In order to fund these expeditions the Europeans had to receive funding from the monarchs. The monarchs were more than willing and able to provide the sponsorship and funding for the expeditions because...

North American Civilization

...settlers of the Americas took place in North America in Alaska. Asian hunters are thought to have traveled over the Bering Strait during a glacial period somewhere between 35,000 B.C.E. and 10,000 years later. The Asian people, referred to as Native Americans, did not realize their discovery of a new world. The early North American men and women were nomadic hunters and gatherers. As the further migration continued south an agricultural lifestyle formed. The European colonization of the Americas is thought to have been established by explorers and fishermen at a much later date. The blend of diversity was apparent as the migration of the Americas grew and strong developed societies were established. Although Native American descendants merely followed their survival instincts, they had discovered an abundant new world. The nomadic hunters tracked animals across the frozen land bridge and crossed into a new continent. The migration continued south along the west coast. “Over a span of 25,000 years settlement spread down the Alaskan coast, then deeper into the North American mainland, and finally throughout Central and South America.” (Davidson, 2006, p. 11). The original survival lifestyle of the nomadic hunters blended into new discovered agricultural resources with the progressive southern migration. The discovery of producing a food supply through cultivating crops created an agricultural revolution. The migration throughout the Americas had proved to be...

Rise and Falls 1500-1800

...The United States Through Industrialism Brings Learning Alive! Teachers’ Curriculum Institute 1 Introduction I n this reading, you will learn about the Age of Exploration. This period of discovery lasted from about 1418 to 1620. During this time, European explorers made many daring voyages that changed world history. A major reason for these voyages was the desire to find sea routes to east Asia, which Europeans called the Indies. When Christopher Columbus sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean, he was looking for such a route. Instead, he landed in the Americas. Columbus thought he had reached the Indies. In time, Europeans would realize that he had found what they called the ”New World.” European nations soon rushed to claim lands in the Americas for themselves. Early explorers often suffered terrible hardships. In 1520, Ferdinand Magellan set out with three ships to cross the Pacific Ocean from South America. He had guessed, correctly, that the Indies lay on the other side of the Pacific. But Magellan had no idea how vast the ocean really was. He thought his crew would be sailing for a few weeks at most. Instead, the crossing took three months. While the ships were still at sea, the crew ran out of food. One sailor wrote about this terrible time. “We ate biscuit… swarming with worms…. We drank yellow water that had been putrid [rotten] for days... and often we ate sawdust from boards.” Why did explorers brave such dangers? In this reading, you will discover some of...

Compare and Contrast

...CONTRASTING THE SPANISH EXPLORATION FROM THE ENGLISH EXPLORATION Sean Kazmierski HIEU 201 6 December 2015 Introduction Evidence of the earliest travel by European explorers into the ‘new world’ can be traced back to 1000AD. It began with the Vikings sailing from their native land in the British Isles to Greenland where they created a colony. Later, they left Greenland for North America where they saw virgin land with exotic plants, animal species, and indigenous people[1]. The Vikings returned home with stories about the marvels of the places they had visited, but their home authorities lacked the will power or the resources to make a follow-up on these explorations. As a result, European states continued to make commerce across the Mediterranean Sea with North Africa for many years that followed. Research has shown that the methods and motivations of exploration were unique from one state to the other. As Europeans continued their explorations, we will examine the similarities and differences on how the Spanish (1492-1548) and English (1584-1648) conducted their exploration and expansion. Comparison Between the British and Spanish in North America The first Spanish to arrive in America was Hernan Cortes in 1519. He did the groundwork for the creation of the Spanish colony. In 1607, Christopher Newport set foot in what would later become Jamestown, laying the foundation of the British Empire in North America. Explorers, such...

Native American Culture Essay

...The Spanish were the first European country to establish large settlements in the Americas, and perhaps, the most brutal and aggressive nation out of the three colonizing powers. The Spanish came to America with a clear purpose to conquer the land and force the people to submit to the government. According to Render, the Spanish sent armies of men to subdue and conquer the land, extract its resources, and spread Christianity to its Indigenous inhabitants who were enslaved in the process (25). In order to make the subjugation process easier, the Spanish established what they call the mission system. Missions were built across Turtle Island, not serving as places for people who waned to learn about the glory of Christ, but to imprison the Indigenous inhabitants on the island. Cruelly, the Native Americans were enslaved and forced to build their own prison camps. Once being captivated, the prisoners were “separated by sex and age in order to ensure control over the growth of the population” (Render, 26). Throughout the time that the Spanish governed the area, the population of Native people on Turtle Island decreases dramatically, due to disease, poor living standard, or...
