...Bible Dictionary Project Name: Breanna Student ID: Course: BIBL 104 Date: 4/20/2015 Old Testament Bible Dictionary Project: Proverbs The book of Proverbs written in 950-700 BC by King Solomon and a few others, primarily focuses on the wisdom, justice, and righteousness of humanity. The author uses the literary device parallelism, which instructs the readers to read and interpret two line units instead of each single line. After Job and Psalms, Proverbs is the third Old Testament book written in Hebrew Poetry. The poetry contained in Proverbs takes many different forms, but the two major types are, discourse and pithy sayings. Discourse is mainly present in the first nine chapters of Proverbs, where they poetically argue the advantages of wisdom. Showing similarity, contrast, and, consequence, in the form of two-liners, are pithy sayings. Contrary to what some may believe, not all of the text in Proverbs is absolute truth, and readers should interpret it as principle. This particular biblical book recognizes the various circumstances of our life and gives us wise insight and instruction to live better in the eyes of God. The ideas of marriage and sexuality, the power of tongue, principles of child-rearing, personal discipline, and friendship are all concepts touched on in Proverbs (Hindson and Towns). Proverbs emphasize that listening to our elders will help us to gain wisdom and knowledge; those who choose to speak and not listen will come into trouble (12:13)...

He noticed a beautiful woman smiling at him from the front row, so, after the recital, he made a beeline for her and introduced himself. Within seven seconds he came to two realizations. First, he was going to marry this woman. Second, she didn’t speak a word of English, and he didn’t speak a word of Spanish or Catalan, which were her languages. When he got home, he realized that if he was going to have a chance with Ester he was going to have to show some commitment. So he quit his job in America, moved to Barcelona and went to work with the Barcelona orchestra. Over the next few years, he learned Spanish and Catalan and Ester learned English. They have been happily married for 22 years. “Sometimes you just have to be all in,” says Brooks (who is no relation). “You have to go beyond cold utilitarian analysis.” Brooks later became a social scientist and is now president of the American Enterprise Institute, probably the most important think tank on the American right. He has emerged as one of the most ardent defenders of the free enterprise system. But the humanist that he is, he has primarily defended capitalism...

...While N.T Wright’s book, Simply Christian is composed of three main parts, the focus that answers the question is predominately in part II. Wright has a pattern of simplifying Christianity, increasing its clarity and accessibility. In that manner, the value of Jesus’s resurrection dates long before he was crucified, or even born, or even before his immaculate conception—in the promise and will of God. One could argue that the Bible itself is the story of who God is through his son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. The Old Testament in its own standing was a journey of promises; the New Testament validates God’s faithfulness through Jesus Christ. In this case, looking at the Bible as the narrative of Jesus can help answer the “so what” of his resurrection....

...August Wilson’s Ten-Play Cycle August Wilson’s ten-play cycle is a series of plays created that follow the lives and experiences of African American’s throughout the twentieth century. As the plays were created, the collection as a whole then became the Pittsburgh Cycle. All but one of these plays took place in the City Hill’s district, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where the writer, August Wilson grew up himself. These plays were some of the finest of all time within the category of contemporary drama. As he tells the stories of how African American lives was perceived in these plays, there is a significance to be identified through each playwright. He sheds a great deal of insight on history, struggles, triumphs, relationships, and conflict between man and himself. In the series of these plays there is a valuable significance but there are a few plays in particular that depict clear images of what Wilson wanted to portray to his audiences. In an interview with Bill Myers, Wilson discusses his past and how he became a writer and developed even in his childhood ages. He credits his mother for bringing his inner poet out of him. She was very adamant in making sure he knew how to read. This trait instilled in him was carried out through his fantastic work as a writer. Although he did not finish high school, his success was much greater than those four walls. He went on years later to receive a Pulitzer prize award in 1987. During this time people in Wilson’s community started to...

...Nutrition for Performance CRN: 6978 October 7, 2013 ------------------------------------------------- Testosterone ------------------------------------------------- History & Uses Scott Livingston How did knowledge of testosterone come about? Well, in 1849 Arnold Berthold, a German scientist conducted the first formal experiment pertaining to hormones. He noticed that chickens that were castrated during development grew up to be passive (lacking fighting and mating behaviors) compared to normal roosters. Arnold Berthold decided to implant testes into the abdomens of castrated chickens. The chickens with implanted testes grew up to behave like normal roosters. Thus, Berthold concluded that the testes much secret some sort of substance since they were not connected to nerves. He said, “ The testes act upon the blood, and the blood acts upon the whole organism.” (Berthold, 1849). In 1889 Charles-Édouard Brown-Séquard, a Harvard professor, decided to inject himself with substance containing extracts from guinea pig and dog testicles; he called this concoction a “rejuvenating elixir” (Brown-Séquard, 1889). Brown-Séquard published in The Lancet that his energy, vigor, and overall health were restored, but the effects did not last long; Brown-Séquard attributed this to placebo effect. Because of these findings, Brown-Séquard was mocked by his colleagues, forcing him to give up on his research. In 1927 Fred C. Koch, a professor at the University of Chicago, realized...

...Vietnam veteran would return home great and proud. But this is not the case. Many Vietnam veterans have committed suicide before, during, and after the war. Not only have these men and woman risked their lives for our country, but now, return different people and can not comprehend whether or not to continue their lives. Many people believe we win wars, when in actuality, no one does, especially those who serve in the armed forces (Suicide Wall, 11-10-2000). The Vietnam and other wars have mentally and sometimes physically dismembered many veterans. Another factor that plays a role in a war-related suicide is the addition of many on-site diseases such as defoliants, Agent Orange in particular. Made up of equal parts N-Butyl Ester 2,4,-D and N-Butyl Ester 2,4,5,-T, Agent Orange made many Vietnam soldiers go insane (Vietnam Veterans, 11-10-2000). This atrocious chemical lead and still today leads to death, deformation, and diabetes. Dr. Joel E. Michalek, who deals with statistics for the air force, was the first to notice a link between Agent Orange and diabetes. But the federal government was not willing “...to spend millions of dollars on such studies”. Dr. Michael Gough, a retired biologist was quoted as saying “the conclusion I’ve come to is that there is no evidence whatsoever to support any connection between low-level...

...THE BIBLE MUSEUM Czarina Ann Baptisma, Jerson Cristobal, Angelica Enriquez, Maria Jennylyn Sendito, Lejun Christian Osorio We were pleased to see that the Bible Museum here in the Philippines on its feature all owned. With the theme, How the Bible Came to the Philippines, we were stunned of the interconnection of knowing the Bible more in such a way that we took the correlation of it to the Philippine history. In fact, the tour is different, a religiously inspiring one. This museum can be found on the second floor of the nine-story Philippine Bible Society on United Nations Ave. The museum is an organization whose mission is to promote the reading of the Holy Bible. It translates, prints, and distributes the Holy Scriptures. At around 3 o’clock in the afternoon last Wednesday, December 5, 2012, we went to the Philippine Bible Society on United Nations Ave. While waiting for the whole class to be complete, we stayed at the first floor of the nine-story building. The first floor houses a bookstore where one can buy Bibles and other religious memorabilia including mugs, key chains, t-shirts, and many more. At around 3:15, Kuya JM, our tour guide, led us to the second floor of the building, where the Bible Museum is located. Before getting inside the museum, he told us that we are not allowed to take pictures inside the museum unless told so. There were a total of 15 modules. The first three was about the time when God spoke to Abraham to when God revealed the Ten Commandments...

...Ariana Herranz En11 E03 My Grandfather: A Blessing To Many There are about seven billion people on this earth and each and everyone of us has met a lot of different people with unique stories to tell but only a few of these people have truly inspired us to become a better version of ourselves. I have never met him and I will never get the chance to meet him personally in this lifetime for he has passed away years ago; one thing is for sure, he absolutely inspired a lot of people, especially my mom’s side of the family. My grandfather, Cipriano Liwag Caraos, or better known as Panong, was born of the 22nd of September 1910 in a small bahay kubo in the province of San Jose, Batangas. He became orphaned at a very young age and was raised by Bitong and his wife Francisca, the sister of his biological father, Segundo Caraos. Francisca and Benito temporarily took care of him until they had children of their own. Due to this, Lolo Panong was only able to attend school up to the 4th grade. Later on, he stayed with his uncle Tranquillo Caraos in the small town of Tiaong Quezon. There Lolo Panong started earning on his own, involving himself in buying and selling products mainly in the fish industry; like trading kulambo in exchange for tinapa. Not so long after this, he started buying pieces of land in able to expand his business and soon became part of a Civic group named Kipaba-kilusang pang bayan, an association of...

...good example is the story “For Girls, It’s Be Yourself, and Be Perfect, Too” by Sara Rimer. It focuses on two amazing teen girls Esther and Colby who have to face many issues that many young women today have to confront now as well as the stress it entails. Esther and Colby learn right from the start that they have to be perfect during every waking hour and not waste anytime. The girl’s lives are influenced by their parent’s desires and the opinions of their peers. They don’t even think of themselves. Today’s amazing girls are facing pressure from their parents, as well as images they see on T.V., in magazines, as well as everywhere they look. Society pressures young women to be smart, sexy, and athletic. Sara Rimer writes; “If you are free to be everything, you are also expected to be everything” (page 2). At one time young women were viewed as the lesser sex; and were expected to become obedient wives and good mothers. They weren’t expected to go to or even complete their schooling. It was viewed as a waste of time. As time passed women started to become able to receive an education, vote, and have a job outside of the home. Society then started expecting more out of young women. The young women today have to become the amazing girl’s in order to do what their family and society expect from them. As in the story with Esther and Colby, we pressure out children to go beyond the average C in school. We expect the bests A. The girls in the story get multiple messages...

...evening. Throughout the evening, jazz music blared into the New Orleans air from both clubs and homes where families gathered inside. The killer’s savage, jazz-loving legacy continues to torment popular culture to this very day. “American Horror Story: Coven and The Original shave each featured the Axeman as a character. And Chuck Palahniuk’s 2005 novel Haunted resurrects the Axeman in the “Sister Vigilante” story” (Engleke). There are many theories about the Axeman. The first theory is that there is not only one Axeman, but many people behind these murders. “It is believed that many of the attacks were the work of copycat killers (Belew). “It is also said that some of the murders weren’t even related to the Axeman but work of the mafia.” “Another theory is that the Axeman is, in fact, a supernatural being” (Belew). “There are people who believe that he could shrink down to fit through small spaces, like the chiseled doorways, and then grow into the big man that the witnesses saw. The third theory is the belief that Joseph Mumfre is the Axeman. This theory is closely related to the last killing of the Axeman. After her husband died, Ester Albano remarried a man named Angelo Albano.”...
