Since they had to practice in secrecy (King James I wanted to punish those that did not follow the Anglican form of worship), they moved to Holland in 1608, but after some of their young began to stray from the faith, the Separatists moved to America. Pilgrims: The people that moved to Plymouth from an English port in the summer of 1620 were the Pilgrims. They called themselves this name after a Bible story that had the term Pilgrims in it. The Pilgrims were trying to reach the northern coast of Virginia but missed and landed on the inner shore of Cape Cod Bay, naming it Plymouth. Mayflower Compact: The Mayflower Compact was a layout of the Pilgrims’ government, in case other passengers challenged the authority. Forty-one men signed the compact and it tied the Puritans and non-Puritans. The Mayflower Compact helped shape the American system of government. Under the Mayflower Compact, John Carver became the first governor of Plymouth. John Winthrop: John Winthrop was an English Puritan lawyer that got a charter to form the Massachusetts Bay Company. The charter did not list where the company’s headquarters should be, leading to the transfer of the charter and the headquarters to New England by Winthrop and his friends. ...Stories are predictable. They’re typically written with rising action, an intense climax, and a satisfying resolution. History, on the opposing hand, isn’t so simple. It continues to go on regardless of its many climaxes. To some critics, history can never give a decided ending. The Colonial era would serve as an example of that. The founding of America was a title wave of various controversies as well as having many ups and downs. Bradford was one of these passengers and took notes and wrote down facts, people till this day can’t believe are true. He talks about struggles the Pilgrims faced and obstacles that they overcame. Through everything, God was showing them, or what they believed to be signs from God, that they were his “chosen people.” “When the faithful were brought low and then rescued from the brink of disaster, they felt utter reliance upon God” (Donegan). God was guiding the pilgrims and giving them hope, that everything will be okay. Nothing could have prepared them for the signs that God was giving them, to prove they were indeed his “chosen people.” Why were the Pilgrims the chosen people? Books, letters, decrees, even town notices can each give us insight into what life was like before we or our living families came into this world. There are oral traditions that can be passed down, as well as stories told from one generation to another. Letters specifically can show one person’s experiences, opinions, hardships, and relationships. This letter, from Sebastian Brandt a settler, serves as a perfect example of life before industry or the American dream. Sebastian writes to his friend Henry Hovener who is back in England at the time. The letter is written on January 12, 1622. According to the letter Sebastian appears to be a middle aged settler who made the voyage with his wife and brother. Due to the enormous outbreaks of disease at the time, they had both passed away about a year before the letter was written. Sebastian writes about silver, gold and copper. This suggests that he may be in the lower class considering he is venturing on those quests on his own. For the most part, humans have learned a great deal from the past but pick and choose when to properly utilize that knowledge, when to remain stagnant, and when to forget lessons learned entirely. Reading William Bradford’s history of Plimoth Plantation however, helped me remember the incredible endurance God imparted in the human spirit and reaffirmed how He always leads His people to victory after the most trying trials, a lesson that is almost always forgotten in the midst of a new one. Bradford has a profound story to tell. The essence of any story at a basic level has a beginning with progression to towards its middle and end. It is narrated and contains some sort of conflict to propel that progression. In my opinion, Bradford’s story is on the pilgrim’s new lives in America and the trials that God brought them through propelling them towards great success later. He compares their journey to the nation of Israel and other biblical references in which God guided His people through hard times. Its lesson is on perseverance and complete faith in God. While there are other minor lessons to be learned as well, this is what most stood out to me. Bradford meticulously documenting all the misfortunes the pilgrims faced further solidified his message that if they were able to endure all those things with great conviction, surely I could too under God’s grace and mercy...
