Right and Wrong The Stranger by Albert Camus shows plenty of irony because Meursault was killed unjustly. The crisis of Meursault being killed is a serious problem because he is mentally unstable and the jury should have acknowledged it. Through Meursault’s death Albert Camus suggests that he was unlawfully killed. The author uses irony to illustrate how people can be wrongly convicted in the federal justice system. For example the speaker says, “I heard ‘guilty of murder’... ‘premeditated’ … extenuating circumstances (106).” In other words the speaker was accusing Meursault of committing many crimes but Meursault was just mentally incompetent. He realizes that he has never been hated this much in his life and has and completely rethought everything. For instance, in the text it states, “For the first time in years I had this urge to cry, because I could feel how much all these people hated me (90).” Figuratively speaking he had never felt that sad in his life and showed a change of emotion for this time in the whole story. The author suggests that for the first time in Meursault’s life he was not treated with love or indifference and hate. Right as Meursault was going to be executed he states, “I felt that I had been happy and that I was happy again. … I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate. (122-123).” Albert Camus conveys that he thinks out of the ordinary and not like everyone else. If a box were in a room and everyone were to think inside the box, Meursault would be the man that thinks outside of the house the box is in. Meursault was genuinely a good person and meant to do kind-hearted things. Although he ended up doing the opposite. All Meursault needed was some guidance. They prosecutor made it seem like Meursault was being put on trial for the death of his mother and not showing any emotion at her funeral.
