The layers of the multifaceted planet Earth have many different metals and rocks that make up the layers that surround the liquid core. On top, the many different plates of the crust move in different ways and form boundaries. The boundaries cause many different, violent reactions such as volcanoes that produce powerful eruptions. As I will cover in this paper, the plates move in three different ways, which give way to three different types of effects on the surface. The first type of boundary is the divergent boundary. These boundaries form when two plates or more separate from each other and create an area of new crust that is magma as it flows up from the mantle (Watson 1999). Divergent boundaries are distinct in that new crust is always formed because of the plates flowing in opposite directions. A good example of a divergent boundary is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The vast amount of plates and faults had created an underwater mountain range that extends from the Northern Artic all the way down to the tip of Africa (Watson 1999). Now it is not underground, but rather it is built using earth and wood for support. Shaped usually as a dome, the earth lodge held many people, as well as included a fire place, food storage, and even a space for animals such as horses. When analyzing the structure, it is clear that this place was home for many in the past. This structure had a place near the back for a shrine, most likely for prayer. The branches in the entrance typically symbolized an offering, since they were wrapped in trade clothes. The domes had a place for visitors to sit, which meant they were not always exclusive people. It is clear to see that these structures provided a home for many people in the past. Evaluating the decision to keep replicas of this type of housing development in North Dakota took no time at all. In today’s world; the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara tribes still see the Earth Lodges as a sacred symbol of the past. It is obvious that these domes were used for centuries, and were important for the three affiliated tribes that used these types of houses.
