...Sonn Eidem Eng 669 World Film: Germany Prof. Macanear Sept. 2014 German National Cinema: Nazi Propaganda Films German propaganda films were used by the Nazi party and Adolf Hitler in order to convey a message to the citizens of Germany. The messages would vary depending upon what Hitler and his party wanted to tell the people of Germany at that particular time. If it was pre-war propaganda it was Hitler on his rise to power. If it was wartime propaganda it was to keep Germany unite in their fight against the enemy and to keep them inspired with hope and promises of victory. "One of the most philosophically fascinating uses of cinema, is a vehicle for propaganda. Granted all mass media-books, television, music, newspaper, radio and nowadays the internet - can be used for propaganda, that is, as tools for getting a message broadly accepted in a target audience. But, it has been argued that film-as opposed to literature, the plastic arts, music and the other performing arts-has a unique power as a tool for propaganda" (Jason203). "The films of a nation reflect its mentality in a more direct way than other artistic films because films are never the product of an individual and the films address themselves and appeal to the anonymous multitude" (Kraucer, 5). This is why Hitler and the Nazi party decided to use film as a method for spreading their ideology. Film allowed them to reach the masses in a way that other mediums just couldn't do. Plus...

...Little Girls? Journal of Film and Video, 66(3), 43-55. In this article the author conducts a qualitative analysis of Pixar films and their perceived aversion to portraying strong female characters as children. The study makes mention of all 14 of Pixar’s animated films but focuses on the portrayal of female adolescents in the Toy Story trilogy, Monsters Inc., and Finding Nemo. The author dissects the evolution of the young female characters in Pixar films, providing information from both a film production perspective and a screenwriting interoperation as well. The main argument in this study is that Pixar’s early films did not have female protagonist and that the later films that feature young female protagonists perform their gender in a “tomboy” fashion or in other ways that frequently subvert stereotypic female gender performance for comedic effect. In addition the author, makes note that Pixar often structures it’s narratives around the platonic friendship of two male characters, with female characters playing various supporting roles. The author argues that with the addition of more female staff at Pixar Studios, which were at it’s inception entirely male, contributed to the addition and continued evolution of female adolescent characters in Pixar films. This source is helpful in assessing the representation of female adolescents in film, because even though the focus of the analysis is on Pixar character the author often references Disney films and prior studies to put...

...portfolio including movies, television shows, theme parks, and merchandising. Some of the most famous icons in American pop culture have come from Disney, most famously their mascot Mickey Mouse. Entire generations of American children have now grown up watching and consuming Disney productions across different forms of media or going on vacation at the massive Disney theme parks in California or Florida. For these reasons, the Walt Disney Company remains a very interesting corporation The Disney Company got its start in 1923 when brothers Walt and Roy decided to start an animation company in Hollywood. Walt Disney has already had experience in animation, but his first few cartoons with his own company were failures. In fact, Walt almost lost control of his company when a rival lured away almost all of his employees after Walt refused to sell his company to his competitor. The Disney Company’s fortunes changed when Walt came up with the idea of Mickey Mouse and produced Disney’s first sound film Steamboat Willie. This cartoon was an immediate success, due in part to the fact that this was the very first animated film to have synchronized sound. The success of Steamboat Willie opened the doors for Walt Disney to produce numerous Mickey Mouse cartoons that found success and established his company has a powerful figure in American animation,. ...Spain. During the silent period of film all of the biggest Spanish directors including Marro, Chómon, Gelabert, and Bános were based out of Barcelona (Alvarez 6). The first films that had sound where shown in Barcelona before anywhere else, although without sound due to the lapse in technological capabilities (Alvarez 7). Barcelona’s movement in film did not stop there. Throughout the years and generations Catalan cinema has been a part of Spanish culture and has in its own right fought to survive. In the beginning Barcelona was the sole player in Spanish Cinema. Madrid, the other major metropolitan area, was more concerned with traditional forms of entertainment such as bullfighting and la zarzuela (musical theater) (Alvarez 6). The first Spanish film was actually that of a group of church goers leaving Sunday Mass which was entitled Salida de la misa de doce del Pilar or in English: “Leaving the Midday Mass at the Church of Pilar in Zaragoza.” This film was already the way from 1896 and would seem to show an enthusiastic future for film if it were not for such factors as foreign competition, government, and an overbearing church (Stone 14). During the turn of the century in particular themes of the church dominated with films such as The View of Campo Valdés Taken at the Leaving of Midday Mass, Leaving the Midday Mass at the Church of Saint Peter, and Voyage of His Majesty to Albufera (Stone 15). The first fiction film did not come along until 1897. The director...

...The Effect of Propaganda on World War II The countries associated with World War II suffered through the hardships of fear among citizens, deficient number of soldiers, and financial depression. In order to involve entire countries in the war effort, propaganda spawned in the forms of movies, posters, and even postcards and appealed to the viewers’ emotions. Movies and cartoons gave people a serious message about the war while simultaneously making the audience laugh, which was commonly lacking during the war years. Not only does the cartoon provide comic relief, but also gives subliminal messages of national pride to the spectators. In the Allied countries, propaganda often was used to belittle the power and prowess of the Axis powers, specifically the Nazis. Visual Propaganda from the United States, Great Britain, and...

...Marco Jimenez 19 April 2015 Mus 468 sec: 02 Starship Troopers Basil Poledouris was hired to compose the scores for “Starship Troopers” because of his previous work on “Conan the Barbarian” and “Robocop”. During his time with the film of “Starship Troopers,” Poledouris’ music had to adapt to Verhoeven screen writing in able to fit properly because the director was seeking bombastic, rousing music that was wildly hyperactive which lacked centralized development, being said it was defined as “thrill of the moment” score. The music that Poledouris created for Starship Trooper was explosive with power and extremely heavy on the brass that is straight forward and in your face and pulls away. The beginning of the movie, the music that opens up is the Federation’s March, demonstrating a militaristic tone of using the drumline as a march. The trumpets enter for that good news that the good guys here, for high motivation then it slowly descends to a softer tone of the trumpets and violin describing a good manner of what the Federation has in store of heroes. Ending it with drumline of a demonstration of militarism. Also giving a nice introduction about propaganda. Klendathu Drop, the first battle of the War against the Arachnids which the Federation and daring hero Johnny Rico will set foot on Bugs Territory. As the soldiers embark in their cargo ships, the tone of the music gives you this anticipation of action and violence soon to happen. The instruments that began were violin...

...waters. Much of this has come with the sacrifice of morality in order to have the most “shock factor”. This brings about the question, can theatre maintain Christian principles without hindering communication and the development of art, especially in a modern society? With a deep analysis on different aspects of ethics in theatre such as community, technology, duty, and propaganda it is very clear that in order to be true theatre, it must always chose art over morality. Although most theatres find it hard to follow Christian philosophy, they do not have to sacrifice the practice of being ethical in order to remain effective communicators. The idea behind ethics is developing an idea of what is “right” and what is “wrong” within a community and an individual. Ethics differ in different communities because they are based on the values of each community. This is why it is hard to have true Christian ethics in theatre. Because we were created by God, humans are called to be virtuous and tell the truth. By studying what is good, just and beautiful, one will become good, just and beautiful. Sometimes theatre focuses on themes that are far from what is just and good. Plato was worried that the idea of free imagination took us away from truth and reality (Dutton). It is important to remember that ideas have consequences, so this makes theatre responsible for the ideas that are portrayed to an audience through the show. However, those who call theatre immoral are missing the purpose (Dutton)...

...Media Manipulation The word ‘media‘ started to be used in the 1920s and after the Second World War when radio, television and video became more popular and less controlled the phrase ‘mass media‘ has first been used. The dissemination of news became simple and rapid and since the world wide web came up in the 1990s, the public is flooded by information. The mass media is assigned to inform the public and to be an opinion former to the public. (Furie, 2008) But the media isn‘t always objective and the people in power noticed many years ago that „If we understand the mechanism and motives of the group mind, it is now possible to control and regiment the masses according to our will without them knowing it.“ (Bernays, 2004) The phrase ‘media manipulation‘ is made up of the french word ‘manipuler‘ which means to handle something and of the latin plural of ‘medium‘ which describes a particular system or form of communication. Media manipulation refers to a single-sided and or deformed presentation of facts by news producers or journalists. The aim of media manipulation is to mislead the viewer or reader and to change their opinion about a particular topic, person, company or institution. Media manipulation is separated from falsification such as inventing interviewers, the subsequent manipulation of videos or photographs. (Eder, 2006) Unilateral preselection of the information is often the start of a manipulation. There is a daily information overload which make it impossible...

The reason the film has been selected to do the report on was, I had the movie at home. Clint Eastwood’s performance as the character Walt Kowalski demonstrated a prime example of the socioeconomic conditioned stereotype, produced as a result of the World War Two social conditioning. Unfortunately, throughout history, propaganda and war have gone hand and hand, like two entangled serpents. To have a war that is abstractly agreeable by its population, a government needs its people behind the war. Hate, many, times is manufactured against another race to justify going to war and killing the...
