Outcome 3 is creating a complex argument that creates a claim for you paper. That claim needs to have stakes. Stakes are basically risks you paper takes in arguing your point. The argument should persuade the reader your way. The claim is essentially what gives your paper direction. It is the main point you are trying to make. The claim is like the heart in the body, without it you can’t survive. It pumps blood through the whole body just like the claim gives direction to every paragraph.

This is important because you need to be able to create an argument which sets the basis for your entire paper. It is what gives the paper direction. One basically needs this skill when writing any paper. It can be used in almost every class you have to …show more content…
I am by far not an expert on this topic yet, but I will definitely continue to work on it. It is a skill that comes with practice.

The papers that I have selected to show my best work in this outcome are short paper 5 titled “The Thoughts of Bernhard” and major paper 2 titled “Illusions and Fantasies”. “The Thoughts of Bernhard” has three individual claims and “Illusions and Fantasies” is a complete essay, so the entire essay falls under one claim, but has sub claim within each paragraph .

“Illusions and Fantasies,” major paper 2, demonstrates my ability to create a complex claim. My claim for this paper is “Although many people do not think of fantasies in autobiography, fantasies and illusions are essential when helping people deal with life because it helps people cope, understand things, and deal with life challenges” (1). This was not my original claim, but my first one lacked complexity. After I meeting with Clare at the Odegaard Writing Center, we decided my claim was not very complex so we chose to use this claim instead. I feel that is much better than what I had and is very complex. I use stakes in this paper. I argue that characters in autobiographies use fantasies. I …show more content…
The arguments are still complex. My claim for my last paragraph is “Due to Bernhard’s grandfather’s intelligence and very strong opinions, Bernard was unable to do “any form of theory and systematic learning” (97)” (3). Which is complex and argues that since is grandfather had all these strong opinions that he pasted on to Bernhard he was unable to do normal learning. I use strong analyzing of the evidence to support my claim. I write “this is a theme that is beginning to develop in the novel his attitude of resistance. Bernard says “I felt that my playing was of the most virtuoso kind yet I could not play anything properly from music” (97). He has his own ideas of how music should be played and this relates directly back to his grandfather” (3). I include this quote then explain it but this quote goes directly back to my claim to support it. It is an example of how he was not good theory and systematic learning, by analyzing the quote I support my claim. I also persuade the reader that my claim is true and I do it by the way it is organized. I begin with “he “had the greatest desire to play the fiddle, the greatest desire to make music” (97)” (3). I show that he wants to learn. Then I quote Bernard “my playing was of the most virtuoso kind yet I could not play anything properly from music” (97). Then I say his grandfather’s opinions on
