...follow Virgil to Hell. Threshold and the Threshold guardian: Before the Hero leaves his known world, he first must cross through a threshold that leaves his world behind and leads him into the unknown. This can be as simple as leaving home or crossing a path, but the symbolism of the threshold defines the start of a Hero’s transformation. Many times, the threshold has a guardian that denies the hero’s entry or advises him to turn away. Despite the resistance of the guardian, the hero pushes through and begins the transformation stage of his journey. As Dante and Virgil enter into Hell, Dante leaves his known world and goes into the darkness of sin and punishment. This is part of the threshold into the unknown. They first pass the vestibule which contains the opportunists, those who have been denied entry into both Heaven and Hell. However, before entering the circles of hell, they must first cross the river Ancheron with the boatman Charon. Charon is the threshold guardian who refuses Dante’s entry into hell when he recognizes Dante as a living man. Virgil, confronts Charon and forces him to serve them, and Charon eventually obliges. It is then when they cross the Ancheron, the second part of the threshold. It is at that time when Dante officially enters into hell, and leaves all behind. Challenges and Temptations: Challenges and temptations in the hero’s journey are often the development of the Hero. It is a buildup of what causes the hero’s revelation and transformation. It...

...“die at thirty, robbed of decades of majesty.” Prior is obviously in a down mood, but ends his monologue saying that he knows he's hit rock bottom when “even drag is a drag,” showing that he's so depressed that even his old passion isn't fun. Prior then shows up and neither person freaks out as they both realize that it is a dream, or hallucination in Harper's case. The conversation is very bleak, with Harper also speaking about hopelessness saying life is the “same old ordinariness and falseness rearranged into the appearance of novelty and truth.” The fantastical nature of the dream allows Harper to see that Prior is sick, which shocks him as he doesn't even know this woman. Harper explains that her hallucinations are the “very threshold of revelation” and invites Prior to try. After an unimpressive attempt, he flatly informs her that her husband is a “homo.” At first she rejects this, but then realizes that it is true and seems very sad. Prior tries to comfort her but she says she has to go, saying that “something just fell apart,” talking about her relationship with Joe. Harper then disappears...

...arrangement of shapes separated from the picture Image segmentation is commonly used to find objects and limits (lines, bends, and so forth.) in pictures. All the more correctly, picture division is the procedure of allocating a name to each pixel in a picture such that pixels with the same name share certain visual qualities. Fig. 4 (a) Original Image (b)Segmented Image 3.4. Thresholding approach Thresholding is helpful in segregating frontal area from the foundation. By selecting a threshold value T, the gray level picture can be changed over to binary picture. The binary picture ought to contain the greater part of the crucial data about the position and state of the objects of interest (frontal area). The upside of getting initial a binary picture is that it lessens the unpredictability of the information and rearranges the procedure of acknowledgment and order. The most well-known approach to change over a dark level picture to a binary picture is to choose a threshold value (T). At that point all the dim level qualities beneath this T will be delegated dark (0), and those above T will be white (1). 3.5 Features Extraction The Image features Extraction stage is critical in our working in image processing methods which utilizing algorithms and techniques to distinguish and detach different wanted parcels or shapes (components) of a picture. ...Counter to Christian end time theology, promoted by popular books and movies, there will not be an evil man over a ten nation confederacy, ruling the entire world at the second coming of Yeshua. There will not even be a seven year tribulation. We will have no warning of the imminent destruction of the planet Earth. In Luke 17:26-30, Yeshua said, the end will be like the Days of Noah and Lot. Christian theologians completely miss the mark when interpreting the prophecies in the Bible. They try to apply the mysteries of the Book of Revelation and the Book of Daniel as future events relating to the world as a whole. But the first step in correctly understanding Biblical prophecy is recognizing that prophesy is all about Israel and Judah. Another disadvantage Christian theologians suffer is their lack of knowledge concerning Israel and Judah. Christian theologians are unaware that most of the prophecies in Revelation and Daniel are fulfilled, with the evidence being, Jewish history. Some theologians might call my views Preterism, a Christian belief that...

...Adam Luker Professor: Dr. Joy Austin ENGL 2201.U51 28 January, 2012 The Best of the Best of the Best Sir The standards of excellence set forth by heroes and heroines alike bring forth many important and equally fascinating comparisons with real life heroes and heroines throughout history. Heroes and heroines follow a very strict and well defined, predetermined path. These strict paths can be easily referenced at any point during a hero’s journey. The intriguing story of Gilgamesh can be compared in such a manner to real life occurrences of heroism as well as serve, in turn, as a model to follow. The fascinating story of Gilgamesh tells of a hero born of humble beginnings as an underdog leader seen as a tyrant by his own people and through mass paranoia is shunned and put at odds with the gods by means of prayer. Much like the beginnings of all real life heroes and heroines, Gilgamesh shows us that life sometimes, in fact, doesn’t go our way from the beginning. As with any hero and heroine, Gilgamesh cannot undo the hand he is dealt, he must simply prove himself through his actions. The gods responded to the subject’s prayers by means of creating Enkido. Enkido was meant to be Gilgamesh’s arch nemesis; yet through Gilgamesh’s actions over time, Enkido grew to love Gilgamesh as only a brother could. This could only occur if a hero or heroine is worthy of bearing the title given to them by fate. Eventually the kinship developed between Gilgamesh...

...Threshold guardians are those that guard the mythical world before the hero enters. Within the story, the green knight, the porter at the castle, and the guide that was with Gawain to show him where the green chapel was can all act as threshold guardians. Although the green knight presented the call, he still tested Gawain's ability before crossing the threshold into the unknown by presenting to him the beheading game. This game tested Gawain's stance as a knight and also started his journey. If he could not have successfully beheaded the green knight then he would have been unable to set about the journey in the first place. This therefore shows how the green knight can function as a threshold guardian. Likewise, the porter is a threshold guardian since at the castle he asked Bertilak if Gawain can cross the bridge in order to enter the castle. The other threshold guardian is the guide that was sent with Gawain to the green chapel. When the guide questioned him and asked if he was certain that he wanted to encounter the dangerous man that lies in the...

...1320 April 1, 2014 Sharing is Caring In present day society, individuals dedicate their time to social media on the internet and electronics, towards updating statuses, rebloging pictures, favoriting videos, reading up on current events, and staying connected in general. It’s only been 25 years since Tim Burners-Lee invented the world wide web and it’s no secret that it is one of the most progressive and influential invention of our time. Dave Eggers, in his current book The Circle, foretells his version of what can happen with the growth of technology and social media and pushes our current standard of being virtually connected from the main social networks Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Tumblr. In this book, focusing on the ninth threshold of social networks and the technological self, we notice the influence of technology on societal construction and deconstruction of privacy and the nature of democracy impacting humanity’s digital life. Set in an undefined future time, Eggers’s novel tells the story of Mae Holland, a young idealist who comes to work at the Circle, an immensely powerful technology company that has conquered all its competitors by creating a single log-in for people to search, shop and socialize online. The company demands transparency in all things; two if its many slogans are “secrets are lies and privacy is theft.” Anonymity is banished; everyone’s past is revealed; everyone’s present may be broadcast live in video and sound. ...Heaney was born on 13 April 1939 into a family of nine children at the family farmhouse called Mossbawn, between Castledawson and Toomebridge in Northern Ireland. Heaney initially attended Anahorish Primary School and when he was twelve-years-old, he won a scholarship to St. Columb's College, a Catholic boarding school situated in Derry. In 1957, Heaney travelled to Belfast to study English Language and Literature at the Queen's University of Belfast. During his time in Belfast he found a copy of Ted Hughes' Lupercal, which spurred him to write poetry. Heaney's work often deals with the local surroundings: that is, his surroundings in Ireland, particularly in Northern Ireland, where he was born. Allusions to sectarian difference, widespread in Northern Ireland, can be found in his poems, but these are never predominant or strident. His poetry is not often overtly political or militant, and is far more concerned with profound observations of the small details of the everyday, far beyond contingent political concerns. Some of his work is concerned with the lessons of history, and indeed prehistory and the very ancient. Other works concern his personal family history, focusing on characters in his family and as he has acknowledged, these poems can be read as elegies for those family members. ...Introduction - The study of bribery and corruption in the courtroom is paramount to protecting the rights of every person seeking justice. The fact that a judge or District Attorney is 99% honest simply will not suffice. Even the 1% must be treated fairly and equally under the laws of our country. Just like Jesus would leave the ninety-nine to go after the one, we must protect everyone equally under the laws established. Meditate on the words of Edmund Burke “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” The study and revelation of courtroom corruption is significant because I have personally observed bribery in the hallways of courtrooms in North Carolina. A wise man once told me that the courtroom is not black or white, but green because the person with the most money is routinely dispensed the best outcome. Another personal reason that this topic is personally significant is because I now reside in the state of Mississippi where the 2004 Corporate Crime Reporter asserted that our state was the most crooked state in America. (Mokhibar, 2004) I. The problem is that too many times the issues in the courtroom are not really about the truth. A. ...had vowed to visit the mother nun at the orphanage they were raised in, and was now forced to go by his brother. Once they arrive they are soon greeted by their friend and mentor Cab Calloway an old friendly janitor from the orphanage who tells them that the bank wants to foreclose on the land. Although it is never stated it is inferred that the mother at the orphanage scared Jake with the concept of evil, and wanted to go on this journey in order to cleanse himself of this evil. This is a transformative crisis because Jake has never before been a religious man, he has never before worried about the after life. It is a sudden irrational fear which derives from the lecture which the nun gave them upon their return to the orphanage. The Threshold is overcome when the blues brothers visit the church of Reverend Cleophus James who inspires Jake and Elwood to reunite their former band, The Blues Brothers, in order to earn enough money to save the orphanage. Jake is touched by the reverends sermon he is scared into action by the idea of eternal damnation. He has an epiphany during the church's gospel number and vows to form his old band a new. This is not as easy as it sounds. Jake faces many challenges simply convincing his former band-mates to rejoin the band. This is an unknown for Jake because for the first time other musicians want nothing to do with him. Before he went to prison he was royalty among musicians, but now because he owed so much money, no one trusted him. He had...

...Exo-Vaticana Is Rome actually moving the religious world toward a definite revelation, a momentous disclosure concerning extraterrestrial intelligence that will impact the religion of Christianity? Cris Putnam and I fully expect a barrage of criticism from all sides from the release of our new book, Exo-Vaticana. On one hand, many who believe space aliens are visiting Earth from other galaxies are going to take offense, and, on the other hand, many skeptical Christians will charge us with sensationalism. However, we believe we have good grounds for the ideas behind this book, and if one is willing to engage in the arguments, they will stand up to scrutiny. Even so, a few caveats are in order: First: The UFO/ET subject is murky water, to say the least. But once the hoaxes, hallucinations, and nonsense are extracted, there is a genuine unexplained phenomenon. Second: We are not taking a hard line on the existence of extraterrestrial life, but we do make a case for why we are skeptical. Third: We are not generalizing that all paranormal (another vague category) phenomena are necessarily demonic, but we are basing our epistemology on the proven guide to the supernatural, the sixty-six books of the Bible. The Arrival of an Alien Savior Currently, the group of beings referred to as “aliens” are…preparing the earth for a massive…paradigm shift, while also continuing the education that they maintain is crucial if the human race is to be spared destruction. The nonhuman intelligences are...

...Shelou Baigan October 16,2013 Philo 106 1:00-2:30 I. Based on what we have discussed about the First Way of St. Aquinas, I learned that a being whose essence is to exist is called a necessary being. The universe contains only contingent beings. God would be the only necessary being because he exists. Dependent beings cannot cause themselves. They are dependent on their causes. If there is no independent being, then the whole chain of dependent beings is dependent on nothing and could not exist. But they do exist. Therefore there is an independent being. I learned that there must have been an unmoved mover (GOD) who first put things in motion. I learned that nothing can move itself. If every object in motion had a mover, then the first object in motion needed a mover. Therefore this first mover is the Unmoved Mover, called God. The chain of movers must have a first mover because nothing can move itself. The First Way is all about Motion. Motion means moving to any kind of change, not just change of place. So, if the whole chain of moving things had no first mover, it could not now be moving, as it is. If there were an infinite regress of movers with no first mover, no motion could ever begin, and if it never began, it could not go on and exist now. But it does go on, it does exist now. Therefore it began, and therefore there is a first mover. God is simple, without composition of...

...the play, Prior has had abnormal dreams, while Harper has been having discussions with an imaginary friend (Mr. lies). These two characters live in another reality that is different from the rest of the cast members. For example, the scene where Prior and Harper meet in some sort of weird joint dream. They do not know each other, yet share this odd and intense experience. In this scene, the two characters support each other to understand an essential truth: Harper helps Prior see that even though he feels dejected and hopeless, some part of him is not tainted, Prior reveals to Harper that her husband is a homosexual. One can argue, how is it they are able to experience such intense revelations. Consequently, Harper clarifies that occasionally you can see things when you are on "threshold of revelation" (Kushner 33). The bits of knowledge Prior and Harper share in this scene drives the scene forward, which creates another association. In spite of the fact that the characters of Prior with Louis, Harper with Joe seemed like ideal couples, we as audience members can see that these relationships begin to dissolve ending with rejected partners. Louis leaves Prior when he discovers that Prior has AIDS; Joe and Harper split when he exposes the uncensored truth. To make the parallels considerably even more intriguing, their partners wind up as a couple. As you can envision, both Prior and Harper are crushed, which appears to drive them considerably more profound into their despair. Further...
