The biggest ship built to that date, The Titanic, was considered unsinkable. Everyone thought it unsinkable since it was the biggest and had new watertight compartments. The compartments could keep the ship afloat if there were less than 4 compartments flooded, and sadly, according to National Geographic, there was six flooded. With multiple events for this sinking, it was a perfect storm. The Titanic might have been doomed before they started, there was a fire. According to telegraph.co.uk, there was a fire, before they even set sail. The fire ended up being where the iceberg would eventually hit, causing it to be easier for the iceberg to pierce the steel. The website says that the fire could have weakened the steel up to 75%. Sadly, multiple people knew about the fire, they still set sail even after knowing it weakened the steel. The titanic was created with "watertight" compartments, made to keep it alive even after four are flooded. According to ezslinger.com, the ship had received 6 warnings about icebergs. All 6 warnings were ignored by the wireless operator on the ship, the operator was busy dealing with passenger messages. The night was also a full moon, and the water was still. This made it very hard to see icebergs from a distance, if the waters were more active it would have been easier to see. The ship had ended up trying to reverse once they saw the iceberg, this made it harder to turn and ended up making a hole in the hull of the ship. Ezslinger.com says the hole was " 12 square foot opening (the size of a refrigerator) in the hull allowing water inside the ship." The Captain of the ship made a horrible decision to try to reverse and turn to avoid the iceberg. This did not work with these types of ships, it would have dodged the iceberg if the captain had sped up and

...Picture Titanic Titanic Queen Mary Lusitania Queen Elizabeth II (Q.E 2) Built by Harland and Wolff, the RMS Titanic was the largest ship of its type when construction began in 1909. Built in conjunction with its sister ship Olympic, the Titanic required a new dry dock to be built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast. In 1911 the Titanic was launched and fitted out, ready for service in 1912. Even before that fateful night (on April 14th, 1912) when it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic ocean, the Titanic had already cost the lives of eight people who were either working on the ship itself or in the dockyard workshops. Among the many people who were lost during the sinking of the Titanic was the naval architect, Thomas Andrew who designed the Titanic and it’s sister ships the Olympic and Britannic. The result of the sinking of the Titanic though lead to certain requirement having to be made to passenger ships such as sufficient life boats for all the crew and passengers, and a permanently manned radio communication. In addition, it was also agreed upon that the firing of red rockets from a ship would also be seen as a sign that a ship was in distress or need of...

Wreck Of The Titanic Research Paper

...The RMS Titanic “The story of the Titanic began before anyone had even thought about building the great ship.” These words were quoted from the book Exploring the Titanic, by Robert D. Ballard. In Ballard’s book, it references The Wreck of the Titan, written in 1898 by Morgan Robertson. The Wreck of the Titan’s story followed the largest passenger ship ever, named Titan, on its trip across the North Atlantic. The ship was labeled “unsinkable.” Yet, it sank after hitting an iceberg with many wealthy and renowned passengers on board. Since it didn’t have enough lifeboats for the passengers, a significant amount of lives were lost. Ten years after The Wreck of the Titan was written, a dinner party was held in London. Two men, J. Bruce Ismay, (former President of the White Star Line) and Lord Pirrie (former chairman of Harland & Wolff shipbuilder), were organizing the concept to make three...

Titanic Disaster Research Paper

...The Titanic's maiden voyage was a disaster because the first thing they didn’t do was pay attention to the messages that other ships sent. The captain seen the messages, but he chose to ignore them. Another thing that made this disaster happen was that the captain sets the ship to go full speed. Other ships warn them, but they didn’t listen. When the ship has struck ice the people started to evacuate the ship. The people used boats to evacuate, but they weren’t filled up all the way. The boats had the capacity of forty people, but they only had ten in one boat. This is why the Titanic had a disaster. The Titanic maiden voyage was a disaster because the captain didn’t pay attention. The Captain Edward J. Smith was sleeping instead of paying...

The Sinking Of The Titanic Research Paper

...The sinking of the Titanic The sinking of the Titanic was one of the most horrific events that ever occurred, but who was responsible for it? Captain Edward J. Smith was the cause of the Titanic sinking. The Titanic’s operators had received multiple iceberg warnings, but when they told Captain Smith, he remained at full speed and he said, “ Besides, what danger could a few pieces of ice present to an unsinkable ship?” Obviously Captain Smith didn’t take all these warnings from every other ship seriously. He remained at full speed because he was under a lot of pressure to get to the U.S. on time or even before schedule. Captain Smith payed more attention and cared more about fame rather than safety and the lives of all the passengers on the...

...Young1 RICHARD BALLARD PROFILE By definition, Richard Ballard was a great oceanographer. Ballard had always been interested in the sea since he was a little child. His curiosity got the best of him and he has accomplished so much since then. He has written a variety of books to go along with his scientific research and findings within the ocean floors. One of his most popular discoveries was The Titanic. His underwater archaeology work is amazing. It is pretty impressive to know that Ballard has a sense of humor when it comes to storytelling in his books. It is pretty incredible to go submarine diving and not know if you will surface because you are on a mission to find the impossible artifacts within the black sea. Ballard was also known for his natural discoveries during his deep-sea expeditions. Even though Ballard is known for his discoveries, his first expedition was unsuccessful. There are many written pages that discuss Richard Ballard’s underwater discoveries. “During Richards long career he conducted more than one hundred-twenty deep-sea expeditions using the latest in exploration technology, and he is a pioneer in the early use of deep-diving submarines” (Richard Ballard). As the president of an Exploration Institute, Ballard received many prestigious awards for his discoveries, television appearances and books to go and prove his findings. Many of Richards’s expeditions are well known. “He led the 1977 expedition that discovered deep-sea hydrothermal vents...

Change Analysis

...Change Analysis Joseph Jackson HRM 587 September 14, 2014 Dr. John Anderson Change Analysis  Practitioners and writers like Lee Bolman, Terrence Deal, Gareth Morgan, and Mary Jo Hatch claim that the images that people hold of companies or organizations influence their interpretations of what they think is going on, what they think it has to happen and the way they think things ought to happen. The images can be seen as metaphors or frames that people hold in their minds. These images of change and of managing influence the ideas of people and what people think management of change is about. This paper discusses these images of managing change in relation to two organizations, the Microsoft Company and Apple Company. The facts from the week one proposal are that the drive for change for Microsoft Company is the rising level of competition that calls for a need to have differentiated and integrated products. When it was seen that only a few short years ago Microsoft had more money than Apple and less debt I am sure that shocked many people on the market. The information related to this is that the company has been able to develop integrated devices such as Windows phones and services like Bing. In order to have a range of products, the company acquired the mobile device sector of Nokia Corporation. On the side of the Apple Company, the drive for change is innovation and high tech pressures to be in a position to maintain its high levels of technology. As a result, the...

Short Term Memory Research Paper

...From my research I learned that three days after a person sees a picture, your brain will remember 65% of what you saw. The hippocampus is where the brain stores memory. Our brain is 10 times bigger than scientists originally thought from recent studies. There are two different types of memory in the brain. Short term memory and long term memory. Episodic memory is the of memory of specific events. Short term memory causes your pre-frontal lobe to be very active. The brain remembers positive and negative information in two different hemispheres of the brain. Negative emotions generally require more thinking than positive information. My problem was, does the human brain remember sad events or happy events more? I was interested in this...

I Didn’t Do It

...I DIDN’T DO IT Abstract This report is comprised of the three primary values/virtues I believe an Ethical leader should poses in the modern business marketplace. 1. Diligence 2. Reliability 3. Forbearance With each of these values I have argued my position using examples of real life incidents where a single decision lead to tragedy. The research was conducted mainly through legally produced documents from each incidents inquiry into the events which caused each independent situation. I have used moral theory to relate these situations to modern business ethics, this gives practical application to ethical decision making and leadership skills. The summation of findings concludes that the values and virtues required of an ethical leader is far more extensive than I originally thought and is not limited to the primary three that I have chosen to argue. Major financial tragedies like the 2008 financial crisis, can only be attributed to unethical decision making. I believe there can be a definitive list, but not limited to, three primary value/virtues of an ethical leader. In the following report I intend to argue for what I believe to be the three values/virtues of leaders ( as section headings) who possess not great decisions making skills, but one step beyond that into ethical decision making skills. I will argue my position through a brief analysis of situations in which a single decision gave way to a multitude of unethical behaviours and even tragedy through...

Examination of Clinical Psychology

...Examination of Clinical Psychology Clinical psychology is an area of psychology which seeks to find and understand the various behavioral problems humans possess, and the possible psychological problems and disorders. “According to the APA, clinical psychology attempts to use the principles of psychology to better understand, predict, and alleviate intellectual, emotional, biological, psychological, social, and behavioral aspects of human functioning (APA, 2009a)”(Plante, 2011, pg. 5). For one to gain a better understanding of clinical psychology, the history and evolving nature of clinical psychology must be discussed, the role of research and statistics must be explained, and the differences between clinical psychology and other mental health professions must be discussed. The items listed will be addressed and examined throughout this paper. History of Clinical Psychology In the later part of the 1800’s, psychology was being discovered in several laboratories in different universities. The field of psychology was insisting and leaning more on pure science as the main practice, but a former student of Wilhelm Wundt, named Lightner Witmer, made an impact and changed that view on psychology (Pickren, 2009). Lightner Whitmer in charge of the psychology department in the University of Pennsylvania. Whitmer began to work with a boy who had problems with spelling, and developed a program of tutoring which became a success in helping the boy. The success from the tutoring program...

True Women of the West

...True Women of the West To see a women’s true worth is deeper then beauty. If she does not document her story, then who will tell it in its full truth? Throughout history a woman’s story was lost. As a society we have glamorized history of women who were called, Red Light Women, Soiled Doves, and Painted ladies. History books leave out many details of what these women lives were really like. Today’s equal rights activist, Roma Thompson, takes a different approach in bringing awareness about todays current equal rights issues. Roma has spent the last three decades designing costumes and doing research on important women in Colorado history, to present to groups, all over the western United States. Thompson’s passion of the rough life of a working girl in the Wild West, opened her eyes to the ugly true of the battle of equal right’s that women have endured throughout history. Every women in history had a story, from the parlor women, to the Madam’s, and history’s leading women activist. Even though, women still struggle to be equal in today’s society, Roma feels that educating on the women in the past, will bring awareness to the true worth and importance of women in the world. Thompson creatively transports her audience back in time to the early 1900s, starting with the painted ladies and madams, and leads into women who inspired her the most. Brothels could be found in all different areas—mining towns, cow towns, logging camps, large cities, cattle-shipping centers, end-of-track...

...Lessons Learned Paper Francisco E Guzman University of Phoenix Dr. Nancy Arduengo Lessons Learned Paper * Connecting with a group of doctoral students for the first residency is very challenging. Most of the students admitted to having feelings of misperception, worry, or uncertainty. Meeting someone new is certainly not comfortable, however the anticipations and nervousness of a doctoral program is adequate for someone to ask why one would choose to embark on a titanic venture.   This residency has encouraged me to withstand in my program.   There were more than a few eye-openers that revealed progress and improvement as a doctoral student.   In the last five days, various lessons and experiences were imparted and learned but the most important lessons for me include the learning team experiences, scholarly writing, and reflective journaling on the lessons learned. Learning Teams During this residency experience, I acquired a lot about learning teams.   In my academic and professional experience, I have been a part of numerous teams.   I have had some bad encounters with teams during my period with the University of Phoenix and acknowledged that the team experiences at residency would be similar.   I definitely applied my situatedness but I understand now a cohort of different personalities can form a successful team where all opinions are heard, all ideas count, all contribute and all appear to demonstrate an authentic interest for one another.
