The trebuchet project was the final project we completed for physics class this year. The trebuchet Payton and I built was most definitely unlike any other project we had every done before, which made it challenging but also fun. Our trebuchet used the force of gravity acting upon our counterweight to propel the throwing arm, thus releasing the object. The object we initially used to practice was a rubber ball, but on the day of the real launch a coconut was used. The ability of the trebuchet to be able to launch the coconut is dependent on many different factors. The law of conservation of energy applies to the trebuchet launching process. No energy is destroyed or created, it remains constant and can be transferred throughout the system …show more content…
The counterweight we used for the first two launches was 20 lbs. The side of the launching arm holding the counterweight is shorted in length than the side holding the coconut because this allows a higher linear velocity. The principle of mechanical advantage allows for a higher linear velocity to be reached because the counterweight end does not have to pivot as long as a distance as the other end. Before our third launch we removed part of our counterweight, reducing it to 15 pounds, in hope of reaching a smaller launch distance and getting closer to the set accuracy distance of 2.2 meters. Removing part of the counterweight did result in a shorter launch distance that was closer to the 2.2 meter goal than our first two launches. Newton’s second law of motion demonstrates that adjusting the mass of the counterweight exerts a greater force. If we were to improve our trebuchet, I would add more weight to the counterweight if we were going for a greater launch …show more content…
Slings, when properly installed, typically result in longer launch distances. As the throwing arm rotates when the counterweight drops, the coconut experiences centripetal acceleration causing unrestrained motion of the coconut once released. We decided not to use a sling because of the difficulty and uncertainty it could result in when being installed or when setting up for launch. For example, on launch day one of the launches that used a sling went straight up into the air because it was not properly set up and adjusted before launch. Adding a sling to an improved trebuchet would most likely result in a longer launch distance, but I am glad we decided not to use one and stuck to the basic, reliable
