...Her vocal range was soprano and she has been described as a cross between Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson in her style, feel and vocals. The Dallas Morning News’ Mario Tarradell said that Selena merges Tejano's infectious cumbia rhythm with street-savvy R&B, old-school soul, dancehall reggae, sizzling salsa, and trippy, loopy funk. The Tejano music genre had always been a predominantly male scene and Selena succes’ is even more awe-inspiring because of that. She recorded songs of female empowerment such as Si La Quieres, ¿Que Creías? and Ya No, which explored themes of domestic violence and recovery from...

...He has starred in a many video parts and surfing films. He also released his own short film, Abyss. “I wanted to make it like a psychedelic film about West Oz and where I grew up, something unlike everything else that is out there” “It’s pretty whacked out.” Said Creed. The film included lots of trippy effects in it and music by Sleepy Sun, a rock band out of San Francisco. Abyss is a window into Creed’s world, and at this minute his world is about to go crazy. He is stated to be one of the most up and coming surfers of today. As a single man, with no real fixed address and a want for travel, he says he does not know where he is going to end up next. He says he doesn’t know what’s going to happen to him in the next five years and he really doesn’t care. At the moment he is happy with having much and just taking life as it comes. “I want to travel as much as I can. I don’t have any plans to be anywhere more than one month. It’s all about keeping the travel spirit alive.” Said...

... Others provoke a certain disappointment at their failure, a kind of mourning at the difference between the film’s ambition and its execution. Richard Kelly’s The Box is such a film. Kelly is a trippy, sometimes loopy filmmaker whose Donnie Darko is one of the great cult films of this century. In that film, his far less successful Southland Tales, and now The Box, Kelly creates mind-twisting tales in which everyday conundrums unravel into conspiracies and plots of cosmic proportions. Picture him as Robert Towne with an overlay of Rod Serling. But Kelly spins paranoid fantasies with so many threads that he can’t quite keep track of them all, or make them connect in a meaningful way. That’s the problem with The Box: a great set-up leading to a muted, unsatisfying conclusion that doesn’t really pay off. His film, taken from a short story by Richard Matheson, is set in 1976, to tie it to the Mars landing program that produced the first photos from that planet’s surface. Arthur Lewis (James Marsden) is a NASA scientist who worked on that program and who is awaiting approval to join the astronaut program. His wife Norma (Cameron Diaz) teaches English at a private school near Richmond, Virginia, which their son attends. Portentously, she is teaching Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit. One day before Christmas, a box arrives on their doorstep, a polished wooden object with a locked glass dome covering something like a panic button. The box includes a note informing them that Mr. Steward (the...

...The Art of Peer Pressure by Kendrick Lamar It is necessary that I begin with disclosing the fact that this song is just an extract of an album that describes the reality of a portion of our society that, unfortunately, is in much more need of help than any of us care to realize. In his album good kid, m.A.A.d city, Kendrick Lamar tells a first person story of a day in the life of a “crew” of young gangbangers from Compton, CA. The album is full of songs that capture specific thoughts, feelings or provide background to what is happening in the story at that particular moment. The transitions between songs present multiple voice recordings from Kendrick’s and his mother’s voicemail. These transitions are part of the album’s chronological order and are vital in attaining a complete personality and mental profile of the characters followed throughout the story. Simply, the songs and transitions are each just a part of a “bigger picture”. There is one song, though, that tells a particular story which I think accounts for the largest piece of this “bigger picture”. The Art of Peer Pressure K.dot (Kendrick Lamar) and three of his blood are driving around Rosecrans in a white Toyota. K.dot (16) is the youngest member of the crew and the oldest is 23. His mother is concerned that he will not get to 11th grade if he keeps “messing around with those damn hoodrats”. This is established in a previous song, but it is indicative that his performance in school has dropped as of recently...

...opens the company’s staff meetings with the same ritualized call and response.) The folk festival—featuring countercultural icons like Joan Baez and accessorized by petitions supporting legislation to “Save the Family Farm”—was vintage Ben & Jerry’s. Greenfield’s performance was designed to assure the festival’s upper-middle-class audience that Ben & Jerry’s, maker of flavors with trippy names like Cherry Garcia, is not a bunch of grim stuffed shirts in a boardroom, but a downright groovy (and ethical) little company. The skeptical observer, however, couldn’t help wondering: what happens if you don’t feel so good? Last year, a group of maintenance employees at the Ben & Jerry’s plant in St. Albans, Vermont, found out. These workers wanted time and a half for work on weekends and for any work that exceeded the standard eight-hour day. Company policy was to pay the federal minimum: time and a half only after forty hours have been worked in a week. (This means, for example, that maintenance workers might be scheduled for ten-hour shifts on the four days following Labor Day or Memorial Day, but collect no overtime.) In early November, after months of frustrating discussions with management, some of the maintenance workers, who earn, on average, about $17 an hour, approached the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers’ Local 300, and...

...Fern Hill Summary "Fern Hill" is six stanzas of praising and then lamenting days the speaker spent at Fern Hill as a youth. And this speaker is stoked about running through the countryside. Throughout the poem, he talks about how happy he was as a youngster and how oblivious he was that youth was passing. But at the end of the poem, the tone shifts dramatically from joy to lamentation. It's almost like singing, "If you're happy and you know it, think again!" What was a carefree bliss for the speaker turns out to be a fleeting joy that he ever can't recapture. What a bummer. Stanza 1 Summary Get out the microscope, because we’re going through this poem line-by-line. Lines 1-2 Now I was young and easy under the apple boughs About the lilting house and happy as the grass was green * Welcome to Fern Hill, where the speaker was once young and carefree. Plus, apple trees. Sounds like a great place to Shmoop. * He also hung out in his "lilting house." What in the world is a lilting house, you ask? Well, lilting is an old school style of Gaelic singing, but it can refer to anything with a cheerful, happy tone. * So was the house singing? Well, maybe not literally, but with this personification, the speaker is setting the mood for the rest of the poem. Things are good. * He's young, happy, and the pastoral scenery is like a mirror of the speaker's joy. Lines 3-5 The night above the dingle starry, Time let me hail and climb Golden in the heydays of his eyes...

...One afternoon last August, at a hospital on the outskirts of Los Angeles, a former beauty queen named Emma Coronel gave birth to a pair of heiresses. The twins, who were delivered at 3:50 and 3:51, respectively, stand to inherit some share of a fortune that Forbes estimates is worth a billion dollars. Coronel’s husband, who was not present for the birth, is a legendary tycoon who overcame a penurious rural childhood to establish a wildly successful multinational business. If Coronel elected to leave the entry for “Father” on the birth certificates blank, it was not because of any dispute over patrimony. More likely, she was just skittish about the fact that her husband, Joaquín Guzmán, is the C.E.O. of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, a man the Treasury Department recently described as the world’s most powerful drug trafficker. Guzmán’s organization is responsible for as much as half of the illegal narcotics imported into the United States from Mexico each year; he may well be the most-wanted criminal in this post-Bin Laden world. But his bride is a U.S. citizen with no charges against her. So authorities could only watch as she bundled up her daughters and slipped back across the border to introduce them to their dad. Known as El Chapo for his short, stocky frame, Guzmán is 55, which in narco-years is about 150. He is a quasi-mythical figure in Mexico, the subject of countless ballads, who has outlived enemies and accomplices alike, defying...

From the author of blockbusters Five Point Someone, One Night @ the Call Center and The 3 Mistakes of My Life, comes another witty tale about inter-community marriages in modern India. This may be the first time in the history of books, but here goes: Dedicated to my in-laws* *which does not mean I am henpecked, under her thumb or not man enough PROLOGUE “Why am I referred here? I don’t have a problem,” I said. She didn’t react. Just gestured that I remove my shoes and take the couch. She had an office like any other doctor’s, minus the smells and cold, dangerous instruments. She waited for me to talk more. I hesitated and spoke again. “I’m sure people come here with big, insurmountable problems. Girlfriends dump...
