Understanding and Empathy In the novel The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt, Mrs. Bigio, a lunch lady at Camillo Junior High whose husband had just died from the Vietnam War that occurred in 1967, is sensitive lady who doesn't really think of other people's struggles during the Vietnam War, but her own throughout the story. Mrs. Bigio lacks understanding and empathy when she continuously hurts Mai Thi’s feelings and harasses her. Mrs. Bigio is not understanding that she is saying mean remarks to Mai Thi because she is angry and is taking it out on Mai Thi for her husband's death. She lacks understanding and empathy. She has been hurting Mai Thi’s feelings and also by harassing her. Mrs. Bigio has a spiteful attitude towards Mai Thi by not giving her hot chocolate because she is still upset about her husband’s death. For example, “Mai Thi did not reach for the chocolate when Mrs. Bigio came beside her. She did not raise her head. And Mrs.Bigio did not pause. She finished the rest …show more content…
Bigio lacks understanding and empathy is she does not feel for what she is saying to Mai Thi. Mrs. Bigio harrasses Mai Thi to make herself feel better by not keeping all the anger inside. Mrs. Bigio does not understand the pain that Mai thi is feeling because Mai Thi is being treated the victim who killed who killed Mrs. Bigio’s husband. While Mai Thi was getting her lunch Mrs. Bigio started to make rude remarks, for instance, “Pick it up and be glad your getting it. You shouldn't even be here sitting like a queen in a refugee home while American boys are sitting in swamps on Christmas Day. They're the ones who should be here. Not you” (Schmidt 95). Mrs. Bigio feels as if Mai Thi should not even be here just because all the American soldiers that are fighting in the Vietnam War. Mrs. Bigio doesn't feel bad about what she is saying because she doesn't understand how she is making Mai Thi hurt with her degrading words. Mrs. Bigio misunderstanding is hurting Mai

In the process, Vonnegut offers us an insight into his own writing, and the philosophies that inform it. “They aren’t like most other comedians’ jokes these days,” Vonnegut writes, aren’t rooted in show business and the world of celebrities and news of the day. They feature Americans who are almost always fourth-rate or below, engaged in enterprises which, if not contemptible, are at least insane. And while other comedians show us persons tormented by bad luck and enemies and so on, Bob and Ray’s characters threaten to wreck themselves and their surroundings with their own stupidity. There is a refreshing and beautiful innocence in Bob’s and Ray’s humor. Man is not evil, they seem to say. He is simply too hilariously stupid to survive. And this I believe. Jerome Klinkowitz, in the introduction to his essay collection entitled Vonnegut in America, has used this quote—as he certainly should—to support his claim that Vonnegut’s humor has its roots in the comedic response to the Great Depression. But of course there is much more to it than that. The reader is left with a nagging question: Were humanity’s case really as Vonnegut describes it, and were this truly his belief, wouldn’t it seem that the only appropriate response would be for Vonnegut to sit and laugh quietly at the antics of the doomed race? In particular, I shall explore the idea that this speech is constituted by many voices (in other words, it displays polyphony, to use an idea due to Bakhtin 1981, 1986) and that the audience is part of this speech event, adding and contributing to its text in a collaborative way (in particular, in constructing meaning). As many are aware (including the journalists who report day by day on Barack Obama's achievements), Obama uses the technique of 'personification' (The Economist, Dec 13th, 2007). When he voices an idea, he does not just expose it as if it came from himself, but gets another person (fictitious or, plausibly, real) to voice it. Since in an electoral speech, he cannot reasonably get people on stage to voice his ideas, he personifies ideas by narrating what people told him. His stories are his way of personifying his ideas. The discourse strategy he uses serves to reverse the direction of influence from the people in control to the people controlled (see van Dijk 2003).
