Am I Doing All I Need to Do? Am I Being All I Need to Be?

...Dustin von Soosten OPR with Mrs. Burnett September 27, 2010 English B/D “Am I doing all I need to do? Am I being the person I want to be?” I have been having a hard time for a while now, fir many months I felt like I lost my purpose in life. Not being able to achieve my goals of becoming a United States Navy SEAL, I was in distraught, I had no direction anymore, lost is where I was. My GPS was taken from me, I could not find my way, for a while to believe that I was going to be a firefighter, or go into the Coast Guard. Those careers where just fumes, my determination could blow away with them easily, they give me peace. I no desire for any other career what so ever. Although, for months I had actually believed that it wasn’t in the cards for me to do what I had always wanted to do, that I was not destined to a US Navy SEAL. About two in a half to three weeks ago the fire inside me pretty dim, I had really felt like it burnt out for good. Then one afternoon at school during fourth block, that period is free for me, I heard from Mr. Hoffman that there is a fair going on in the library, I looked and there was nothing. Right after that college “sponsors” came around the corner, so I went in and the four branches of the US Military were already present. I saw the US Navy there, and immediately I had to check it out, I talked to both of the recruiters there and about how I wanted to be a US Navy SEAL, they were extremely interested. I also spoke about my girlfriend...

...during that time he has consistently impressed me with both his technical and leadership skills. 2. SFC Smith is currently working as the Ground Mobile Forces (GMF) Control Supervisor in the Regional SATCOM Support Center (RSSC) - EUR, where he plans, engineers, and coordinates satellite communications network accesses for four unified combatant commanders. In this function he interacts great with people from all services, government civilians, and even other country representatives. He has represented the Space and Missile Defense Command and the Army well in many missions and consistently displayed competence and abilities expected of a Warrant Officer. 3. SFC Smith will surely benefit the Army by serving as a Network Management Technician for many reasons. He has all the correct skills and proven experience in tough, high tempo organizations. What really makes him the correct choice to be a 250N is his determination to succeed. During Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, SFC Smith led his eight-man team into a hostile area and installed a communication network in two hours versus the eight hour average. Additionally, he earned the distinction of Honor Graduate during his ANCOC attendance and also secured a place on the Commandant’s list. I am fully confident that he will represent the Warrant Officer Corps superbly. 4. I am available for further discussion of this matter at Commercial (123)...

Combatant Command Research Paper

...The United States Military has many roles and important duties. The Air Forces works around the world with other branches and nations to complete their missions. The Goldwater-Nichols Act helped bring the different services together and the establishment of Combatant Commanders allows for a clear leader in each area of the world. This is important because each conflict is unique and each service and country has different capabilities. Also, the Unified Command Plan was put in place so each area had a leadership that could fight a war using all the resources available. UCP is broken down into nine geographic areas and three functional commands (Feickert). When the Goldwater-Nichols act was passed it had a large impact on the Combatant Commands....

Operation Eligible Receiver

...Operation Eligible Receiver Operation Eligible Receiver, an interesting attempt by the DOD to show how easily our military computer systems can be hacked into. This exercise was first run in 1997, the intention was to see exactly how vulnerable our military computer systems actually were and “if” with tools readily available on the open internet to accomplish this task, short answer yes. As it turns out there were numerous systems hacked during those two weeks in June 1997. It was a group of National Security Agency officials, which played the role of hacker it was determined that they “could have shut down the U.S. electric-power grid within days and rendered impotent the command-and-control elements of the U.S. Pacific Command” (Gertz). This is the least actually of the concern, if they had truly wanted to they could have disabled computer systems responsible for controlling approximately 100k military troops. The attackers were also able to cover their tracks for the most part, only one of the teams involved was discovered. Most noteworthy would be that the invaders were able to able to “breach the Pentagon’s unclassified global computer network using Internet service providers…” (Gertz). What seems interesting is that there were no special tools used to accomplish any of these breaches. The exercise was handled with standard internet practices and there was nothing released ahead of time. That is what makes these breaches so troubling. Any hacker from any location...

Covert Action Analysis

...sponsor but also opens up the option of plausible denial if they were ever suspected. Covert action is a third option when “soft” exercises of national power such as diplomacy, economic sanctions, or informational power are ineffective in influencing conditions abroad on one hand, while the use of overt military force is undesirable or not feasible on the other.1 Covert action is traditionally divided into three categories: propaganda, paramilitary operations, and political action. Propaganda involves disseminating specific message or viewpoints to a target audience. As an example, in the late 1940’s, the U.S. covertly used propaganda to assist anti-communist political parties in Italy and France during close elections. Paramilitary operations involve training, equipping, and supporting paramilitary groups in target countries. A successful example was when the U.S. supported the Afghan guerrilla fighters during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the late 1970s into the 1980s. An example of an unsuccessful paramilitary operation is the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in the 1960s. Finally, political action involves influencing the political situation in a particular country, whether by influencing current government officials, election results, economic situations, or civic groups. Political...

Budget

...OVERVIEW UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE FISCAL YEAR 2014 BUDGET REQUEST APRIL 2013 OFFICE OF THE UNDER SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (COMPTROLLER) / CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER Preface The Overview Book has been published as part of the President’s Annual Defense Budget for the past few years. This continues for FY 2014, but with modifications as proposed by congressional staff. From FY 1969 to FY 2005 OSD published the “Annual Defense Report” (ADR) to meet 10 USC Section 113 requirements. Starting with the President’s FY 2006 Budget, this report was no longer produced. Subsequently, the Overview began to fill this role. This year to ensure compliance with Section 113, new chapters are added to include reports from each Military Department on their respective funding, military mission accomplishments, core functions, and force structure. Key initiatives incorporated in the FY 2014 Defense budget. Our budget is formulated based on aligning program priorities and resources based on the President’s strategic guidance. This year’s budget involves key themes to: achieve a deeper program alignment of our future force structure with resource availability; maintain a mission ready force; continue to emphasize efficiencies by being even better stewards of taxpayer dollars; and continue to take care of our people and their families. Implementing Defense Strategic Guidance. The FY 2014 budget request continues the force structure reductions made in the FY 2013 budget request. Following...

Authority on Cyber Warfare

...are new weapons, but the content for the most part is the same. Defeat your enemy, rendering them unable to strike back, or attack them where it hurts so that they do not want to proceed in the war. Through the evolution of war, the United States has conquered and been defeated. We may not always be law abiding, but we do what we deem necessary to defend the nation. In the process of defending, we learned that technological advancements are not always a positive thing, and technology can become too powerful for any one nation alone. The creation of the nuclear bomb was just that. Now that there is this terrifying new advancement in warfare technology, how do we stop it from getting into the hands of the wrong people? Executive summary, In this paper, I will discuss how the Stuxnet virus was used to stop the use and development of nuclear weaponry in Iran. The laws on proper use will also be discussed, exploring whether it was lawful to deploy the virus, with relation to the use of Traditional Military Activities and presidential findings. In addition, I will include documentation that reflects the right to use force, armed attacks and self-defense to help determine a reasonable conclusion of the cyber operation....

Contemplating Realities and Paradoxes in the Global War on Terror

...Contemplating Realities and Paradoxes in the Global War on Terror John B. Alexander, Ph.D. Introduction The approach of this monograph is to examine paradoxes encountered in the Global War on Terror (GWOT). The intent is to spark debate on disputatious issues. Clearly, many of the existing situations appear intractable given the emotional investment that has been made by the public, and exacerbated by political manipulation of elected officials. Also unavoidable are the fiscal constraints that are becoming increasingly binding. Examined in Section One are problematic premises related to the four fundamental approaches to countering terrorism; increased security, eliminating the terrorists, attacking the support infrastructure, and altering conditions that breed discontent. Despite trite, albeit politically popular, commentary proposing those methods, execution of those concepts is extremely difficult, often controversial, and sometimes counterproductive. Section Two of this monograph addresses several other policy decisions that generate problems that are difficult to resolve, but directly impact the forces involved. Among those topics are; roles of contractors, individual loyalties versus national interests, alliances of convenience, foreign response to our policy on preemption of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), the consequences of our stated objective of spreading democracy, the impact of U.S. presence in the Gulf region, and quandary associated with defining...
