...Who Sank the U.S.S. Maine? Today I am writing about Marie Elizabeth Lamb’s “Awake United States” which was written in New Orleans in 1898. This song was written between the time periods of when the U.S.S. Maine was sunk to when the call to war happened. This song was rushed into printing during this time period because it established the sinking of the Maine and the fighting urge to go to war. The U.S.S. Maine was sent out to the coast of Havana in Cuba after riots had put American interests in harm. While doing so, they managed to hit a mine that was under water and caused the ship to sink. I believe Marie Elizabeth Lamb wrote the song to turn Americans against Spain, gain as much support for war as possible, and promote yellow journalism....

...States found themselves in a position to assist these people with their fight for independence and to gain some land and power in both the Caribbean and the Pacific. It has long been thought that the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor was the catalyst that propelled the US into war with Cuba. I have found evidence that the US entered into war for a different reason. My research has led me to believe that the spread of disease, especially yellow fever, from Cuba into the US was the true reason for the American declaration of war against Spain. The sinking of the Maine has historically been accepted to be the cause of the US entering into war. It can be argued that it was, but, was the sinking really caused by the Spanish? There is no conclusive evidence that it was or was not. The Maine was sent to Havana Harbor in January of 1898. The ship, along with other US military vessels, was used to help blockade the port. This would keep the Spanish fleet from replenishing supplies and weapons to quell the rebellions going on in Cuba against them. On February 15, 1898 the Maine sank. It was believed that the Spanish caused the sinking that led to the death of 260 American sailors. The incident was used to push Congress to declare war against Spain. The sinking of the Maine may actually have been an accident. The powder magazines in the ship’s cargo hold may have caught fire and exploded. This...

...Cartoon analysis: Cuba is represented by the girl in chains and Spain was the chains that made the girl prisioner. The US broke those chains and the other girl is representing the US invitation to Cuba. The map shows the Us and all its states represented with a star and a new star over Cuba representing the invitation and Us plans for Cuba. The US Battleship Maine arrived in Havanna Harbor in January 1898 with two missions - to protect American interests and present the Spanish with a show of force. Yellow journalism is to blame. "Remember the Maine, To Hell With Spain!" was a common war cry during the Spanish-American war. William McKinley sent the USS Maine to Havana to secure the safety of Americans in the city. The Maine exploded just outside Havana's harbor. While it probably was just an internal explosion that originated in the powder magazine of the ship, two American newspaper...

...excited about the college before the year even ended at Maine East High School. “Yo! when you comin to pick me up?” I asked with a slight ghetto tone. “Traffic is a b!tch in this town!” he replied angrily. “Call me up when you get here.” I instructed. After that we both entered the campus, and we could not believe our eyes. It was just so full of nature and life. I inhaled deeply capturing every moment. I walked steadily along the side walk connected to the lake. The memory would be cherished forever and it is what I would and could only describe it as "perfect". Since Michael had different class than me we went our separate ways. Now I was inside the Oakton building. Everything seemed so intriguing and beautiful. I wanted to explore and never stop, but my class was about to start. I waited for both of my classes to end, and then I stepped outside of my English class to explore the lifestyle here at Oakton. I wandered around the hallways and the first thing I notice is that there is art work everywhere. First I saw this beautiful painting of lilies. The painting was mostly pained with Orange, Red, Yellow, and Green. It did not smell like oil paint so I am guessing it has been there for a long time. I kept walking and I see this life size model of a Deer. The model was made of metal. It was really detailed with its eyes and posture. I was looking at all this art and I started comparing Maine East with Oakton. In Maine East as I walked in the art...

...does an excellent job explaining the viewpoints from both humans and lobsters, is it really necessary for him to explain the viewpoint of the lobsters? Wallace is trying to guilt us into thinking how we treat lobsters is morally wrong. Mother nature made us higher up on the food chain, so there is no need to feel guilty about something we are eating as a mechanism for survival. David Foster Wallace provides valid points regarding morality in his essay Consider the Lobster, however because it was assigned for college students to read, his argument is portrayed as unimportant and unnecessary to the audience. The whole purpose of Wallace’s essay was to make the reader think about morality and how people should put more thought into our decision making process. Although he’s asking directly whether or not we should consider the feelings of the lobster when we eat it, the bigger picture questions our ability to process all the little details when making decisions in life. The longer it takes for someone to make a decision the worst the outcome is going to be, because the thought of doubt enters your mind. So, why should we waste our time thinking about what we should or shouldn’t eat when we all have more important things to worry about? Wallace opens up his essay describing the scene of the Maine Lobster Festival, the largest lobster festival in the world. He then goes into great detail describing the sights and sounds of the festival. Over 25,000 pounds of lobster, gather...

...graded, bagged, and distributed. They originally represented the potato growers of eastern Canada and northern Maine. We know what the results of the strategic planning was the construction of a large manufacturing plant in northern Maine. The main purpose of this plant is to manufacture and process higher value-potato products. This is only the first of three phases they intend to implement. Meaning, we will start out the organizing for the north eastern region of the United States and parts of Canada. The things that will be covered are organization charts, the use of decentralization, financing the business, sales and distribution, and components of human resources, such as hiring and training of employees. The use of a corporate ethics officer, along with stewards in all branches of the organization will also be covered. Organization Structure It would seem that the company has already made and started to implement a strategic plan with intentions of continuing growth to the international level. But before they move on to the other phases, they need to set up the way they would like or need their organization to run. [pic] The organization chart shows three divisions. Representing the Canadian base as Division A, the manufacturing plant in Maine as Division B, and the shipping and distribution from the Maine plant as Division C. Division A will do the collecting wash and sorting from the Canadian potato growers, then...

...The Sinking of the Maine 1. In 25 words or less, identify the event – date, place, and importance. On February 15, 1898, the U.S. Battleship Maine sank in the harbor of Havana, Cuba. This event kindled the war between Spain and America. 2. What long-range causes led to the event? Signed by President Monroe in 1823, the Monroe Doctrine “held that the New World would no longer be a target for colonization” (Dent 12). Spain would not acknowledge the signed Doctrine and comply with its writings. Years later in 1873, a freighter flying the American flag and captained by an American, Joseph Fry, was caught by a Spanish gunboat for smuggling arms to the Cuban rebels. Fry, along with the other two hundred and seven men, were found guilty of piracy. Five days later, he and fifty two of the crew were executed by a firing squad. In addition, some of the now deceased men were decapitated and put on pikes for public display. American citizens were outraged by the brutality of the Spanish people and wanted revenge but the country was still recovering from the losses incurred during the American Civil War and at the time did not have the Navy ships required for war. Furthermore, Presidents Cleveland and McKinley shied away from any major conflict with Spain. 3. What immediate causes led to the event? Prior to the sinking of the battleship Maine, the island of Cuba was in a revolution against their highly oppressive rulers from Spain, which at that time claimed Cuba as a province, for...

...Some do not know this, but Maine's central trade is not lobsters, for that precise reason, Maine is known as "vacationland" and lobsters accumulate travelers. So in the late spring of 2003, Gourmet Magazine sent the essayist David Foster Wallace to examine the ground zero of lobsters, the Maine Lobster Festival, MLF, in the heart of the mid coast area (wallace). One would envision the article would be a paean to lobsters and the exquisiteness of the Maine coast. Truth be told, Gourmet was a dream magazine for foodies and voyagers. However Wallace, a not so secluded critic and expert of savviness and talk, took the reader’s on an alternate adventure. One in which their taste buds needed to confront their consciousness. Wallace hopes to provoke self-analysis and examination of the readers’ own views on animal suffering. He does this by utilizing diverse Rhetorical devices to help engage the readers to influence them towards his contention. "Consider the...

...Policing Functions Sara Powell CJA/394 February 7, 2012 Patrick Daulton Introduction Law enforcement agencies in the United States have numerous different functions. There are three basic levels of law enforcement; Federal, state, and local level. Each level of law enforcement is organized to deliver effectively the services that meet the public’s needs. Collectively these levels and agencies work together to achieve many duties. Whereas each level of law enforcement has its own responsibilities and procedures, their functions are very comparable. Research reveals the various roles of each police agency at its perspective level, how these functions compare to each other, and the impact these roles have in a community. Basic Functions of Policing First, the basic functions of police agencies include law enforcement, arresting offenders, crime prevention, maintaining order, and providing other services to community members in need. Many of these functions may coincide with each other. As an example while enforcing the laws, officers are often required to arrest the offender, which results in the maintenance of order. These functions in turn help prevent future crime. Federal Level of Policing The Federal level of policing includes organizations such as the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The FBI, for example, is the Nation’s premier law enforcement organization and...

...When reading “Scrubbing in Maine”, I noticed that Barbara had the same experiences she had in Florida. For example, when she first moved to Maine, her first priority was to find a place to live. Now like Key West, the price range was about the same. “There are plenty of condos and “ executive apartments” for $1,000 a month or more, but he only low-rent options seem to be clustered in an area about a thirty-minute drive south, in the soothingly named town of Old Orchard Beach. Even there, though, the rents are right up at Key West levels- well over $500 for an efficiency” (Page 54-55). While trying to find a job in Portland she realized that “Portland is just another $6-$7 an hour town”, (Page 59-60) just like Key West. So she had to get two jobs to survive living in Maine, because “Just as in Key West, one job will never be enough” (Page 60). Soon after finding two jobs, first one was working for a nursing home on the weekends and on weekdays she was going to be working as a maid for Merry Maids. “This is the friendliest and best paying maid service I have encountered- $6.65 an hour, though as a punishment this will drop to $6 for two weeks if I fail to show up for a day” (Page 61). After working for Merry Maids for a little bit, she got to know her co-workers. Now unlike Florida and how most of her co-workers were struggling to find a place to live or already struggling with where they were at, in Maine that wasn’t quite the problem. “Almost everyone is embedded in extended...
