Fall 2015 The Vagina Monologues is a series of monologues written by Eve Ensler. Eve Ensler went around and interviewed/ talked to countless women about a more untalked about topic, their vaginas. She heard interesting stories, funny stories, sad stories and more about vaginas. She then encompassed them into monologues that have been performed around the world bringing awareness to women about their sexuality, pain, happiness and own bodies. This book is used by feminist to promote self love but is also controversial to many feminist who feel as though the book reduces women to just what is between their legs. At the age of five her mom unknowingly, in my opinion, traumatised her into believing that she could scratch off her vagina or that it could explode. This led the young girl into never wanting to touch herself down there even in the shower. A fear seems to develop into this young girl. Later at the age of seven a boy, who becomes angry with her punches her in vagina. She runs home to tell her mother about the incident who kind of puts the blame on her (in my opinion) and yells at her to, “never let anyone touch me down there again (Ensler pg 78).” This goes with the whole females should be careful for themselves. At a young age she is shown that it is her fault for the pain down there and she needs to be careful. Our next scene, she is nine years old. She is jumping on the bed and falls on a bedpost impaling her vagina. She needs to get stitches down their. A year later during her father's party, her fathers best friend named Alfred rapes her. During the act her father shoots and paralyzes him and she doesn’t see her father for seven years. After all this by the time she is twelve she views her vagina as, “ a very bad place, a place of pain, nastiness, punching, invasion and blood” (Ensler pg 79). All of these experiences came together to create a female who doesn’t want anything to do with her vagina. Many stigmas are created about women's vaginas already. They are considered a taboo topic. She becomes intrigued by the woman's beauty and stature. This woman invites her into her car and kisses her. Later she invites her for a sleepover which her mom willingly lets her go because of the high status of the female. At the sleepover the young girl asks for a drink in which the older woman responds saying, “she doesn’t think my mama would like me drinking vodka (Ensler pg80),” and reluctantly gives her one after she says, “she probably wouldn’t like me kissing girls, either.(Ensler pg 81).” After that they continue to have a sexual experience that night which concludes with the 13 year old girl saying, “I am worried that I’ve become a butch because I’m so in love with her… I realized later she was my surprising, unexpected, politically incorrect salvation. (Ensler pg 82)” Imagine a young girl in the beginning of adolescence who has been traumatized into hating her vagina meeting a gorgeous woman someone she would want to be like. How easily influenced could this young girl be? In the textbook Adolescence by Laurence Steinberg, he states that, “...there is a period during which adolescents may think like adults but behave in a much more immature way.(pg 297)” Basically many adolescents may think like an adult such as the young girl using her manipulation into getting a drink but behave as a child such as drinking without parental consent.
