Sixth-graders recently read The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. When they read it they knew they would have to be cunning, brave, and quick to think if they wanted to solve The Westing Game and, if needed, get through seemingly long parts that tried to suck the life out of you. That happened often in The Westing Game movie. In the book, there are 8 pairs of heirs, 16 people in all, but in the movie there are only 5 pairs of heirs, not to mention some were not even mentioned in the movie. In the book, James Shin Hoo was Partnered with Grace Wexler. In the book, Grace was a snobby social climber who only paid attention to Angela, but in the movie, Grace pays attention to both of her daughters. In the book, James Hoo did not pay enough attention to his one son, Doug Hoo. They helped each other to know how much attention to give to their children. In the movie, though, George Hoo is partnered with Grace Wexler and they do not help each other because Grace already pays attention to both her daughters, so there is no need for George to help her. Another difference is the settings. In the book, Sunset Towers was a brand new building with one-way glass on the shores of Lake Michigan, but in the movie, it is a run down apartment that is in the middle of a bustling city. Also, in the book, the Westing house is on a tall cliff that is overlooking Lake Michigan, but in the book it is on a small slope and is also in the bustling city with no lake anywhere near
