In the beginning of the story the Gabriel Marquez describes the setting of where the couple lives. The weather and elements reflected the struggles of Pelayo and Elisenda lives. When Pelayo and Elisenda noticed the very old man there is no doubt that they were being tested by faith. As the story goes on and they receive advice from the wise neighborhood woman to kill him, they merely perform a kind act by housing him in the chicken coop. This showed how the couple neither thought of him as a respected human being, and put him in a place for animals. Once their child recovered miraculously in such a short time and they discovered that they can showcase him to the public for profit, they soon realized this old man can bring prosperity into their lives. Even though his presence attracted a swarm of people who wanted his blessings, he did not acknowledge their presence. I believe no one understood what he would try say because they did not care. The people only wanted to hear reassurance for their own comfort and not his. The next morning, the witch locks Hansel in an iron cage in the garden and forces Gretel into becoming a slave. The witch feeds Hansel regularly to fatten him up, but Hansel cleverly offers a bone he found in the cage (presumably a bone from the witch's previous captive) and the witch feels it, thinking it is his finger. Little Red Riding Hood is about an innocent little girl who runs in to a wolf in the forest while she is on her way to her grandmother’s house. Her grandmother being ill, her mother had baked a cake and a pot of butter hoping that it would make her feel better; however, while Little Red Riding Hood was taking her the food to her grandmother is when she met the wolf in the forest and the wolf was thinking about attacking and devouring her but there were woodcutters working in the area and didn’t want to bring any attention on himself. However, the wolf being nice started to ask her questions and gained the trust of Little Red Riding Hood in a short time and he learned where the grandmother lived. ...Akutagawa Compared to Rashomon by Akira Kurosawa By Emily Bramlett In the short story In a Grove and the 1950’s movie Rashomon, we can see the clear differences between the freedom of being a writer, and the freedom of being a director. In many book to movie adaptations, we can lose many different details and meanings that the author had wanted to display. In this analytical paper I will explore both the similarities and differences in theme and content between In a Grove by Ryunosuke Akutagawa and the movie Rashomon by Akira Kurosawa. Between the short story and the book, we see that most of the story remains unchanged. For example, the testimonies between the Woodcutter, Tajomaru, Takehiro, and Masago are barely changed and use many quotes directly from the story itself. Minor differences that occur between the story and the movie would be any kind of fighting sequence between Takehiro and Tajomaru. Each fight is drawn out to show, and explore, the tension between the two men. The sword fight and deul lasts roughly five minutes to show the dramatization of the fight and feeling compelled by all characters involved. We can see how tired each man gets and how torn Masago is. In a story we do not get to see that type of drama, we can only take another character’s word for what they were feeling and experiencing.
