...The writing of the long song “How can I be proud of my Jamaican roots, when my ancestors had been slaves”? This question asked by a woman with Jamaican roots followed British novelist Andrea Levy for a long time. She wondered how anyone could be ashamed of his or her legacy and thus the foundation of her book, The Long Song, was laid. However, writing the book was a more difficult task than presumed. Levy considered many things at the preliminary stage of the book as she knew that she didn’t want to write yet another historical novel about slavery. This is the reason why she chose to write the “behind the scenes”-essay, The Writing of The Long Song. Herein she elaborates and discusses the process of writing her book and raises important questions that deal with extremely relevant themes such as family pride and the filtering of history. Levy opens her essay with a flashback to the conference she attended several years earlier in London where the main theme was the legacy of slavery. She remembers a woman asking the panel how she could be proud of her Jamaican roots when her ancestors had been slaves (p. 7, ll. 5-7). Levy doesn’t remember the panel’s answer to the woman but the question stayed with her for a long time and it ended up being her motivation for writing the book The Long Song. Levy is of Jamaican heritage herself and in contrary to the young woman, she proudly acknowledges her slave ancestry: “If our ancestors survived the slave ships they were strong. If they...

... English 1102-611 13 October 2015 Dream Song 14- John Berryman John Berryman lived a life full of demons. He is viewed as a very cynical, disturbed man who reflected his attitude into his writing. From the beginning of his life he faced emotional distress ranging from family issues, to marriage issues, to substance abuse. A traumatic beginning to his life not only negatively affected him; it also influenced his long and successful career in writing and teaching. Through his hardships, he created one of the most famous compilations of poems in history, The Dream Songs. These poems are littered with fresh and complex styles of writing, including his famous technique of using dialogue and personal revelation. Although he accomplished amazing things in the literary world, won awards and was a major arts figure in the world, he continued to struggle with himself. His never ending despair stemmed from the suicide of his father when he was young, which although very sad, shaped his life and his death to come. The Dream Song series is a modified and published version of his dream analysis treatment during rehab. By analyzing and annotating one of his most famous Dream Songs, Dream Song 14, and studying the major events of his life, it is frighteningly apparent how the effects of paternal suicide, emotional and sex abuse, and alcoholism shaped his life,...

...The subtle differences between Sam Smith’s original song “Writing’s on the Wall” and Sofia Karlberg’s cover of “Writing on the Wall” show that a YouTube artist can cover a famous artist’s song and still be as good as the original, while adding their own flare to the song. I honestly have to admit that I favor Sofia Karlberg’s cover version of the song over Sam Smith’s original version. Both of the artists deliver wonderful versions of the song, but there are a few slight differences between both of their versions of the song that made me enjoy Sofia’s cover just a little bit more. For example, in Sam Smith’s version of “Writing on the Wall”, he has a full orchestra playing in the background of the song. The orchestra does a fantastic...

...would push them in the ranks of major bands like Shinedown, Alterbridge, Three Days Grace, Five Finger Death Punch, and among other notable acts. With 7 songs written in late 2012, the band started writing and recording demos for various months. Despite, guitarist Keith Wallen leaving Adelitas Way in May of 2013 his departure did not stop the band from making their long anticipated release. The band’s original plan for Stuck was to release a total of 12 songs, 11 in your face songs and one song with a pop vibe a song called “Drive”. Pre-Production for the new record started on July 31st, 2013 with Nick Raskulenicz revealed as the producer. The band started recording in early September at a cabin in Rock Falcon Studio in Nashville, Tennessee. It wasn’t long until the band’s record label Virgin Records, got involved in the making of Stuck. After, reviewing the band’s track list and demos the label rejected the release of 2 songs “Undercover You” and “Deserve This”. Although the song “Drive” was the only intended track to have a pop side to it the label demanded new songs to be written that had a more alternative sound. Several New songs were written including the ballad “Undivided” and the melodic track “Something More” both songs were some of the last songs recorded and were added on Stuck to replace the 2 songs that were removed. For nearly 3 months the band vigorously worked on reinventing the new record in the way the label had ordered it to be making it more diverse...

Rebecca Black made this song in hopes to become a YouTube sensation although it happened it didn’t stay a sensation for very long. Although some liked the song most did not. As you scroll through some nice comments and some hateful comments on YouTube you notice that people are mean and saying she can’t sing is true. When I first heard this song I was already aware that I would hate this song but I sat through it anyway in hopes that it would get better but it didn’t. I was relieved when the song came to an end and so were half the viewers that left a comment talking about how bad the song was such as “this song sucks”...

...who said this about music and it is something that to this day that still resonates in every song that is put out and marketed for us to listen to. I can say that I write songs be it they are rap songs, love songs, me songs, us songs, songs about God, songs about the Devil. Well songs about being devilish in what I am doing. They can be good, they can be bad, they can end up in the trash yet they still are my songs until they are proven otherwise then my lawyer will give you a call. Without a doubt, they can be songs about an unrequited love. They can be songs about how my pants are hanging and why they are that hung that low. They can just be anything as long as I know what I am writing about. I can write songs in fifteen minutes, a half hour, or a full day. I might just need a bit more time to add just the right word to a phrase to make a song work. For instance, to start a song, at least the way I do it, is to have a structured beat and rhythm. From there I will listen to it for a while. Is it a dance beat? Is it a chill beat? Will it make me turn off the lights and find myself crying, laughing or just staring into space? This helps you in getting the song straight so you can start playing with the words and making your chorus, then the verses. And you do this until it all sounds right. I usually just need to get it out my head. Then I start all over again. It will be the same song or something all together different but it will make to the done pile. In fact, Virginia Woolf...

...Crystle Clark Mari Wolf CWIII Music is the key to the soul For all of time music has been a way to express ones feelings. Right before a Football game the band plays, at a wedding the bride and groom pick one song to be their first dance and at church the congregation sings hymns. Just as each song is unique, so are the musicians that compose the music. This essay will address a dear friend of mine, a musician named Nick Bonner and his many accomplishments, with his education, a band member, and for his future in music. Nick Bonner and I have known each other for many years and he is a dear friend of mine. Nick is very eccentric and unique. The both of us went to Jackson High School and attended Hocking College. He Graduated with an Associates of applied business majoring in music business specializing in audio performance and production. He also has an Audio engineering certification from a production studio in Chillicothe Ohio. Like I said before, Nick is very unique he as always carved out his own path. Nick is a long haired, free thinking, opinionative person. He is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in or to say what is on his mind. I asked Nick what made him want to become a musician and as he sat there at his computer with his guitar in hand, he looked at me and said “first and for most to express myself, secondly I want to make people feel the way my favorite musicians make me feel”. In order to be fulfilled in his career he has to be constantly setting...

...write something that’s all about me. It seems really easy but damn, my writer’s block is really kicking in. The heat is killing me. I’m sitting in my my room with a refreshing glass of water with two ice cubes, not crushed ice, I hate that shit. I mean why would you want crushed? The pieces are so small you’ll just start to swallow ice. I also have some bad for you poisonous shit chips to my left, but they taste soooo good. I’m listening and singing to some of Coldplay’s great hits on my small little amp. The most notable songs that catch my attention at the moment are: Viva La Vida, Lovers In Japan and Strawberry Swing. Sometimes I try to imagine that there is a strawberry swing on a rolling green hill with the markings of a strawberry on the wood seat of the swing. I love to put myself in the image of what the singer is describing. The lyrics are paint on the canvas of my mind. Thinking about being in someone’s song comforts me. Songs help me get through writing this difficult essay that I wish I weren’t doing at the moment. Wow! I’m almost at two pages. Don’t quit now. Damn. Game of Thrones is on my television. I have to resist! It’s so cool though; I can’t. I get up and turn my television off in an upset manner. Okay. Now it’s time to write. The room still is heating up like the fiery pits of hell, and it’s really starting to annoy me. I can’t focus on an essay in these conditions. I need to take a break………..Okay I’m back. Now it’s time to write. All I can think about while...

...Weapon Conflict Throughout history, humans have used literature as a way to express emotions, feelings, and tell intriguing stories. A Long Way Gone, a memoir written by Ishmael Beah and “Weapon Conflict”, a song performed by Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars are two differing pieces of literature that render powerful messages about the menaces of war that these authors have faced. In the 1990’s, war broke out between harsh rebels and the corrupt government of Sierra Leone. Beah and the members of Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars have different, yet effective ways of telling their stories about the horrors of Sierra Leone. Nevertheless, A Long Way Gone, expresses the true dangers of war more effectively than “Weapon Conflict” because it goes into...

...Walt Whitman Through the history of the United States there have been a countless numbers of poets. With them came an equal number of writing styles. Certainly one of the most unique poets to write life’s story through his own view of the world and with the ambition to do it was Walter Whitman. Greatly criticized by many readers of his work, Whitman was not a man to be deterred. Soon he would show the world that he had a voice, and that it spoke with a poet’s words. Afoot and lighthearted I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me, the long brown path before me leading wherever I choose. Thus Whitman began his “Song of the Open Road”. This paper will attempt to describe his life and poetry in a way that does justice to the path he chose. He was a man who grew up impoverished, who wrote from his experiences, and who tried to lift his fellow men above life’s trivialities. These are the points to be discussed on these pages. To know the essence of Walter Whitman, you would have to understand the heart of his writing. For he is in his pen. Walter Whitman was born in West Hills, Long Island, New York, on May 31, 1819 . He did not have much opportunity for education in his early life. His parents were mostly poor and illiterate- his father a laborer, while his mother was a devout Quaker. Whitman was one of nine children and little is known about his youth except that two of his siblings were imbeciles. No wonder he demonstrated such an insight for life in his poems...
