Perfect? Not for long. - Commentary by Kerri McDonald

The genre of my story is romance; however it changes slightly nearer to the end of my story into a horror. I’d liked to have read this book because I like reading about romance and horror separately, so the two ideas together would be interesting for me.

I think that people in high school and college from the age of 13-20 would mostly like this story, particularly for female readers as they like romance more than male do. It shouldn’t matter whether you’re married, single or engaged, this story can entertain the reader and make them want to read on.

I have written my story in first person narrative (in the past tense), as it’s easier to portray the senses, thoughts and feelings of the protagonist. My story is told from the perspective of an inside viewer, Katie.

My inspiration to write my story was Debora Hill and John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’. Michael, the murderer, kills people and in the end he gets away while the main character that he was trying to kill, Laurie, was still living. I have chosen to name my killer Malcolm because it sounds similar to Michael. At the end of my story he gets away after killing Lewis Jones, which is very similar to Debora Hill’s story, as Michael just disappeared after the reader thinking that he’s dead from falling out of a window. Laurie lived and so did my character, Katie. Michael reappears again and again throughout the story, but he is ignored. This technique makes the reader realize that the character is being followed, so I decided to use this throughout my story too. Both endings feel like there’s more to come and that the killer is definitely going to come back and get them.

The killer in their story was around for a while and could have been sussed or caught at any moment, however I decided I wanted the opposite to that. I wanted my

Writing and Me

...All about me, me and me Woosh. Woosh. Woosh. The fan spins in my excessively hot room. Sweat is dripping off my forehead and I feel like I might pass outtttttttttttttttttttt. Sorry just did right there. Oh fuck! I have to finish this essay tonight and what do I have? Zero inspiration to write something that’s all about me. It seems really easy but damn, my writer’s block is really kicking in. The heat is killing me. I’m sitting in my my room with a refreshing glass of water with two ice cubes, not crushed ice, I hate that shit. I mean why would you want crushed? The pieces are so small you’ll just start to swallow ice. I also have some bad for you poisonous shit chips to my left, but they taste soooo good. I’m listening and singing to some of Coldplay’s great hits on my small little amp. The most notable songs that catch my attention at the moment are: Viva La Vida, Lovers In Japan and Strawberry Swing. Sometimes I try to imagine that there is a strawberry swing on a rolling green hill with the markings of a strawberry on the wood seat of the swing. I love to put myself in the image of what the singer is describing. The lyrics are paint on the canvas of my mind. Thinking about being in someone’s song comforts me. Songs help me get through writing this difficult essay that I wish I weren’t doing at the moment. Wow! I’m almost at two pages. Don’t quit now. Damn. Game of Thrones is on my television. I have to resist! It’s so cool though; I can’t. I get up and turn my television...

Reading Writing Me

...Jackie Rios Ms. Thompson AP Language and Composition 22 October 2015 Reading, Writing, and Me I remember my mom staying with me in my kindergarten class many days of the year to hold my hand while I tried to write my name and other kindergarten words. I was taught how to read, write, and even learn how to speak two languages, all at the same time. As I learned to read I remember my parents and teachers reading books aloud to me. The type of books that were read to me, always had happy endings and everyone lived happily ever after, such as in Corduroy, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the beast, and other similar stories. It wasn’t until around first grade when I was able to read the books on my own, and around this time I was also exposed to...

Why My Writing Is Important To Me

...I find three tips that I think it is useful in my own writing are: improve readability, use simple and informal words, and use bias-free language. Improve readability is most useful for me because this is the problem that I need to concern in my writing. When I write something, people sometimes have hard time to figure out what I mean by these sentence or paragraph. The way I organize the sentence and arrange the words usually make the sentence more complicate. Also, the grammar and words error cause people cannot understand what I try to say. What Does Writing Mean To Me

...I like things that I can control. Watching someone read something you wrote is nerve racking; you don’t know what they are thinking. In life, we are forced to do things we are uncomfortable with. When I am pushed, and actually accomplish the goal that was thrown into my hands, it is more rewarding in the end. Writing is a weakness of mine, in my opinion. I’m afraid to share what I think sometimes, especially when it’s in writing: that means it is real. Once your pen hits the paper, it will be there forever… until you throw it away, delete it, or keep it out of mind. That is hard to do. But it is harder to control your thoughts when they are brewing up and exploding with emotion. Writing gives us a way of sharing. Without it, how could we communicate...

The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me

...After reading  Sherman Alexie's "The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me" I feel very shocked. I really can't remember what I was doing when I was young. Maybe I was watching TV, playing with my friends, having a afternoon nap and so on. At the same age, he started to reading foreign language books and comic books , this phenomenon will never happen in my life. Maybe he was smart and arrogant, but without the atmoshere of his family and his pervenance spirit ,he won't became such a successful people. His father like reading books and brought them from the pawnshops and secondhand and the books were so many that were stacked in crazy piles in the bathroom, bedroom and living room. He use every moments to read books such as lunch time, in the car when his family traveled, in shopping malls and so on. He also have a goodness heart and must be very patriotic. Because he always worried about the future of the Indian children and visit schools and teach creative writing to them. what;s more, although the children refuse and resist him, he never give up to save their lives. I don' t really like the Indian thinking. They hate the smart Indian people and expected to be stupid. Like what he said in the book the Indian children were monosyllabic in front of the non-Indian teachers, but after come home they were talking about complicated stories and jokes at the dinner table. How could they do this ? To be smart is everyone want and they just want to be stupid. In comic book panel...

Making Me Blind Descriptive Writing

...It was a scorching hot summer day, the bright sun beamed upon my face making me blind. I couldn’t see a single cloud in the clear blue sky. The only thing I can see is the vibrant colors from the buildings that made the small street pop. I looked around, my eyes start to get bigger and bigger. I could feel my lips lift upward. My heart skips a beat for the beauty that surrounds me. The pink, orange, red and yellow colored buildings were the brightest colors I have ever seen, making me blind every time I looked at it. The buildings looked like it came out of a brochure travel guide of Italy. The small pedestrian street was crowded with tourists taking pictures of every sight they saw. They looked around the street open mouthed and their eyes were as big as golf balls. Each tourist had a big map in their hands, wondering where to go next. You could hear the loud sweet joyful laughter, a large crowd gathered to watch the Mariachi play their music and people dancing to the music. Everyone had a joyful radiant smile that lighten up the street. Each building had a small wooden sign with their business name on it. Men stand in front of their stores trying to attract tourists to come in, “Ven, ven aqui! Te va gustar esto!” Targeting the...

What Does Persuasive Writing Means to Me

...What does persuasive writing mean to me? It means that I cam going to try and convince my readers that my opinion is all that matters. I am going to do everything I can to persuade the reader that what I am writing is gospel. No other opinion matters but mine. I believe that a good persuasive paper should present the facts first. The writer must do his/her research before they can even present their opinion on the subject. Being knowledgeable of the topic that you are going to discuss is going to have your readers very interested because they can always, after reading your writing, always research the topic on their own. When wring a persuasive piece, I would determine who my audience is going to be. This way you would know how to formulate your paper and all of your persuasion could appeal to your specific audience. Determine if your audience is male, female, working people or people who are not working. These are just some examples I could use, depending on what my topic is. If your topic is about public schools and their money crisis, you could decide if your target audience is going to be teachers, parent or even students. I think that persuasive writing is going to be my favorite because I always have an opinion about something. This particular writing requires you to really think about where you stand on any particular subject whether you think your opinion is big or small. I think that in trying to convince a certain type of group to go along with your opinion...

Writing and Myself

...Writing and Myself | Matthew McMahonUNIV104-1402B-18: Academic and Career SuccessJune 22, 2014 | When I first enrolled into this course, I felt all different kinds of emotions and wasn’t exactly sure what to expect from UNIV104.  I would have thoughts in my head leading up to this class spinning in my head every night before the first day.  Some thoughts like, “Maybe this will be my best class!” and “This class will be easy because I love writing!” were good thoughts that helped me boost my confidence about my college course.  Other thoughts loomed in my head as well such as, “Do I really belong in this class?”, and “I’m probably going to fail this class with just one assignment!”  Such thoughts as these brought my spirits and gave me a pessimistic outlook on this class.  But now that I am done with this class, I find myself to be more at ease with myself and have a newfound confidence in the way that write.                 Writing has been an important form of expression for me.  I find myself to be very soft spoken and speaking verbally is usually difficult for me because I can’t always seem to find the right words to say.  This has led me to be very shy in class.  With writing, I feel that I am more expressive and have more control over what I want to say.  Writing is therapeutic for me, whatever I cannot say directly I can just pour out my heart and soul.  I have been keeping a journal for the past eight years and it has done wonders for me.  I find myself not only...

The Importance Of Writing

...In high school, I hated writing essays for my English classes. At first, I did not have a reliable writing process. I would free write a rough draft and turn it in as a final draft. I would also write last minute instead of using the time to create a well-thought essay. I focused more on passing a class rather than boosting my writing skills. Now that I am in college, I take writing seriously. Throughout the years, my writing process has drastically changed. As a writer, I will continue to advance my writing skills. Prewriting is significant when preparing for an essay, although this step is most of the time ignored. The process of writing is just as important as the writing itself. Prewriting is great for writers to have an organized essay. Sectioning the writing process can make writing less stressful and gives the writer more time to go back and improve their paper. My writing process consists of brainstorming, outlining, rough drafting, and peer revisions....

Revising Reflection

...strategies that I use when writing are online writing tools, and rereading my writing aloud. The benefits of reading aloud my writing are to make sure the order of ideas in a paper to make sense, see grammatical mistakes, and gaps in your explanation. Therefore, rereading my writing will help me to edit, change, add, and delete information on my papers. While taking English course at Mission College, I have learned that revision is the process of returning to a previously drafted piece of writing to incorporate feedback, add on, and refine specific elements of the assignment. In addition, revising builds my understanding of writing as a process that is ongoing, reflective, and nuanced, and can facilitate self-assessment and academic goal setting....

Procratination

...VMy Writing While Growing Up I grew up in a family of writers. My parents are both writers. My dad was an editor-in-chief at a major internet magazine while I was growing up. While I was a young child, both my parents owned and contributed to a programming magazine. I was always encouraged to write as a child. My parents would always help me edit and change my writings in school. Even my brother has always been a writer. He was always telling stories growing up. When he was in middle school he even wrote a book. Growing up in a supportive family of writers has given me a negative outlook on writing which has made me the writer I am today. Since I can remember, I have always been told I am a good writer yet for some reason I have always fought the writing process. English was one of my worst subjects in high school. Yes, it is my native language, but the reading part is not my problem. Writing the essays was my biggest challenge. Starting an essay has always been the hardest part for me. I was taught to always start at the beginning and finish with the end. Later people told me I could write the beginning last, but I was stubborn. I had to write it first. This hindered me. I would usually wait until the last minute because I did not know where to begin. Procrastinating has always been my fall back when writing. Even now, I am writing this essay on Sunday at 2:30pm the day it’s due. My parents would never push me to write, they would ask the usual parental question of, “Did...

What Are The Benefits Of Public Writing

...implications of writing extend far beyond what many in my generation realize. Writing well is a craft which separates one from the crowd. Writing today that is open to the public sphere has become extremely informal. I find social media partially to blame for this. My generation is in a rush to get every thought out into the world and we want to share everything instantly. When we quickly type out our thoughts and hit send, we hardly reflect on our words or consider the implications or validity of our statements. This paper will examine the importance of writing, the benefits of writing on mental health, and how potent writing can take a person far in all realms of life. The National Day on Writing is a day each year to generate...
