CHARACTER BIOGRAPHY SHEET
The character I am answering in place of is Charlie, the janitor. 1. What is your full name?

My name is Charlie Smith.
(I chose smith for the last name because it is a fairly common American last name, the most common in fact based on some statistics. I chose a common last name because as a janitor, I would not imagine the probability of me having a name that really stands out as very high, not that jobs have much correlation to ones name)

2. What is your age and date of birth?

I am 42 years old.
(I chose this age because it fits my understanding of Charlie’s image created through his comments and job. His comment “Women are nothing but girls in long skirts” seemed to indicate his experience with women in life and also an elderly confidence to make a comment that could also be taken as offensive if it was given much thought)

3. What is your ethnic/cultural heritage?

I am a Christian from birth.
(I have chosen Christianity as my cultural heritage only because of the reference to Calvary in the play by Charlie and also because most Americans, by my knowledge are Christians)

4. What is your religion/spiritual belief system?
I believe in Jesus Christ and practice teachings from the Bible regularly.
(This is because of the courteous nature of Charlie as depicted in the script)

5. What is your marital status?

I am married.
(I believe that Charlie is married given his age and seemly maturity, and that it is the understandable assumption to make given his age and seemingly benign and innocent approach to serving Marry Louise)

6. Do you have children? (If so who are they?)

I have one daughter whose name is Linda Smith, and she goes to an art college in uptown New York.
(I chose Linda for his daughter’s first name because it is a common American name as well, and given that Charlie lives in New York (one of the world’s fashion capitals), I chose to give his daughter an occupation in the field of art. 7. What is your occupation?

I am a janitor and I work 2 jobs.
(The information regarding being a janitor is provided to us in the script and I chose to say that Charlie works two jobs because I do not believe that his job is a full time one from the seems of the script, and he must therefore need at least two jobs to cover his family and his own expenses.)

8. What is your favorite pastime/hobby?

I enjoy listening to news and music on the radio.
(The choice of news and music over possibly something like reading is based on a few facts. Charlie is relatively old and not necessarily wealthy. If he’s a janitor then his interest are probably less intellectually aligned.)

9. Who are you closest to in the play? Why?

Cecil Reeves. Iv been working in this building for a few years now, and though I may not have made frequent contact with him in person, I know a lot more about him than I do about Marry Louise.
(The choice of my answer is explained in the answer!)

10. Who do you not get along with in the play? Why?

I do not get along too well with Cecil Reeves. That’s because he’s got a funny name, keeps to himself for the most part, and really isn’t much of a talker so its hard to develop an opinion of or relationship with him.

11. What is the single most important event in your life?

The single most important event in my life was the birth of my daughter Linda.
(I chose this moment for my answer because though there isn’t a wrong answer here, this choice is my safest option given the extent of the character’s personality that I am currently aware of.)

12. What is your level of education?

I have graduated from high school, though that’s the extent of it.
(Given Charlie’s occupation, I assumed that his level of education must not be top notch, though that may not always be a fair assumption, which is why I have raised my prediction to be the end of high school)

13. What is your overall goal in the play?

I serve as a character to introduce the central plot and characters and as a vehicle to conclude the play with through the delivery of the information that provides the play with a sense of thrill.

14. Where do you want to be in five years?

Happily retired of working one part time job as a janitor that at a place requiring low physical exhaustion.
(Given his age, I though it was fair to assume that he had plans to relax and retire)

15. What are the events that have led up to the start of the play?

A woman (Mary Louise) is in a conundrum about her profession and work, leading her to unwind in the setting described in the play.

16. Write down ten adjectives that describe you.

Calm, respectful, loyal, direct, old, understanding, mature, thoughtful, hard working and diligent.
