The last major comparison that should be made to ______________________________ is how the fandom community not only interacts with itself but with the outside community as well. During the 80’s, when _________________ was published, being in a fandom was not cool. People were not openly discussing fandoms amongst each other, that was held only for very close friends. In comparison, today theater fandoms are very open to acknowledging others in the fandom. Fans openly wear Wicked shirts or have Phantom of the Opera memorabilia in their rooms. Due to this fans of musicals have become very open about uniting for a certain cause. This has been seen within the Hamilton community quite often. This line has become rally against many of the new immigration policies. When Mike Pence went to go see a performance of Hamilton this line was specifically emphasized and paused on to make a direct statement to the Vice President. The fandom has also become a strong advocate for those affected by the Hurricane that devastated Puerto Rico because Hamilton was from Puerto Rico. Lin Manuel Miranda has become a central face in the organization of aid for Puerto Rico. The fandom has followed him in the organization and promotion of aid which has led to over 3 million dollars in funds (CITE). In addition, Miranda would later release a song, “Almost Like Praying” to raise funds for the victims. Some of the hypothesis made in the article still hold true today in the fandom of musical theater. Fans are constantly evolving the world that they cherish so much. They are active members in the creative process of the original piece, which makes them not only the audience but, in many ways, the authors as well. However, many aspects of theater has changed since ________________ was written. With the high amount of inclusion found in musical theater, musical theater fans don’t have the need to place themselves in the storyline. They already are. Additionally, with the increased ability to organize and rally against a common issue, musical theater fandoms have become a powerful source of change, something which the Star Trek fandom hasn’t used to the same extent. Although Trekkies have found ways to support their own community, they have not reached out to promote and solve issues of international significance. Many of the differences seen between the Star Trek fandom and the fandom of musical theater are due to the era in which they formed. Star Trek was created in an era without the internet. The main way to communicate ideas were through actual written fan writings and conventions. Although the fandom still exists and has evolved to meet the era in which we live today it still has the tendency to follow the rules of the era in which it was formed.
