...| Family | | | 12/10/2011 | Introduction to Sociology | If someone were to ask you what a traditional American family consist, how would you answer? Would you simply put it as a father, mother and a couple of children? This seems like the right response, but in reality the term family, comes in many variations. The text book defines family a social institution found in all societies that unites people in cooperative groups to care for one and other to include children. (J.J Macionis, 2009, page 374; para 3). In our culture we have seen single parent families, homosexual parent families, and families brought together after divorce. Whatever the dynamics are the family plays an important role in every person’s life. One particular family comes to mind in regards to the institution of family. The Duggar’s, they are a family of twenty- two members that have a reality show on the TLC network. This family is extremely original, considering they have nineteen children. The grandmother lives with the family as well. The faith of this family regulates everything they do, and every decision they make. They have a strong belief that God is the ultimate deciding factor on how many children Michelle Duggar has. They raise their children to respect the precept of their faith, in hopes they will become adults following the same standards. There oldest son is the only one who has moved out and is going in the same direction with his family. The theoretical...

...INTRODUCTION There is a variety of responses received from people regarding the subject of pornography. It depends on how people perceive the subject depending on their information about the topic, their personal experiences, and through the things they come across in their every day encounters that are filtered through their senses, personality, attitudes and values that they have acquired from their lives in society and in their respective cultures. To better understand this discussion, background on the subject being written will be laid out. The Merriam – Webster dictionary defines pornography as the depiction of erotic behavior which can be in pictures, videos or writing intended to cause sexual excitement. Another definition states that it is a material that depicts erotic behavior with the same intent as the previous definition. It may also be the depiction of acts in a sensational manner as to arouse a quirk intense emotional reaction. Therefore, pornography can be in any form which depicts erotic behavior to cause sexual and emotional excitement. The authors have generated their own personal definition of pornography: “Pornography may be defined as the ‘explicit’ depiction, through any sort of medium, of sexual activity with the primary purpose of stimulating sexual excitement and pleasure.” (Gabaldon, Manlunas and Sandejas, 2009) Pornography roots from the Greek word, pornographos which means ‘to write about prostitutes’...

Dark Lady Sonnets 127-154 127 In the old age black was not counted fair, | Or if it were it bore not beauty's name: | But now is black beauty's successive heir, | And beauty slandered with a bastard shame, | For since each hand hath put on nature's power, | Fairing the foul with art's false borrowed face, | Sweet beauty hath no name no holy bower, | But is profaned, if not lives in disgrace. | Therefore my mistress' eyes are raven black, | Her eyes so suited, and they mourners seem, | At such who not born fair no beauty lack, | Slandering creation with a false esteem, | Yet so they mourn becoming of their woe, | That every tongue says beauty should look so. | 128 How oft when thou, my music, music play'st, | Upon that blessed wood whose motion sounds | With thy sweet fingers when thou gently sway'st | The wiry concord that mine ear confounds, | Do I envy those jacks that nimble leap, | To kiss the tender inward of thy hand, | Whilst my poor...

...do black texts bear to other black texts, as well as to the Western canon? Are African-American texts necessarily “political,” by definition protesting the social and political marginalization of black people in America? Do African-American texts represent the particular experiences of African Americans, or do they (also?) address universal problems and experiences? The cultural, literary-formal, and political distinctiveness of African-American writing will thus be the guiding theme of this course’s rigorous, fast-moving survey. Additionally, students in 311 will acquire knowledge of the following: * The ways African-American writers have negotiated the tensions, contradictions, or harmonies between African and American identities within the experiences of African-American subjects in various historical periods. * The strategies employed by African-American literary and sociopolitical texts to analyze and protest racist and economic oppression, as well as racial and sexual violence, in various historical...

...Analyzing Ava ta r: A Rev iew Essa y Nekeisha Alexis-Baker By the time I decided to see James Cameron’s Avatar, I had already heard enough about the film to be unsure whether it would be worth the time, effort and petroleum to see it. People’s comments about the film ranged from praise for its groundbreaking 3D animation; to criticism of its racist portrayal of the indigenous; to disappointment with the overly predictable storytelling; to appreciation for its critique of colonization and civilization. I even heard complaints from fellow peace church Mennonites about its overwhelming use of redemptive violence. After seeing the film through my Christian anti-civilization (anti-civ) anarchist vegan antiracist woman of color lenses, my sense is that Avatar is more complex than many of its detractors or advocates acknowledge. Set on the planet Pandora, Avatar is a sci-fi story of a mercenary-backed corporation’s attempt to confiscate and mine the land inhabited by humanoid aliens known as the Na’vi. Enter Jake Sully, the paraplegic U.S. marine protagonist who joins the science and anthropology wing of the operation as a substitute navigator for his deceased twin brother’s avatar. Early in the film, we discover that the avatar is an expensive high-tech clone that allows its user to temporarily experience and subsequently infiltrate the Na’vi community. After a series of unexpected events during his first avatar excursion, Jake finds himself living amongst the Na’vi clan known as...

...in our walk to economic freedom” and concludes in paragraph 76 thereof that “Mr. Senate President……the Proposal I lay before you this day seeks to sustain sound micro-economic growth that will translate to achieving socio-economic transformation, and gainful employment for our people”. Meanwhile, and perhaps by divine providence, in the afternoon of the same Tuesday, 13th of December; the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Nigeria’s biggest power generating plant, Egbin thermal station, with an available capacity of some 1,080MW out of the nation’s meagre total of about 4000MW has been shut down on account of poor maintenance! Thus, whilst the President was preaching a sermon of transformation in the National Assembly, Nigerians were simultaneously experiencing practical retrogression. Worse still, the raging debate on the removal of fuel...

...relevant to understanding historical Jesus not only because he baptized Jesus but because of their conflicting similarities. John and Jesus were both apocalyptic preachers, in the Essene Jewish sub-group, and popular during antiquity. Many scholars actually believe John was more popular in antiquity. Because of his greater popularity, many argue who kick started Christianity John or Jesus? One can see this argument through artistic paintings of John. Art was an important media for communication during antiquity. As Professor Boccaccini mentioned in lecture, most people in antiquity could not read; therefore, they used paintings to communicate. Painters use symbolic elements in their paintings to portray a message. These symbolic elements, such as red for matador, acted as stories or religious instruction (Boccaccini). Just as a written source, one can extract information from these paintings to find out about the historical character John. The first popular painting of John the Baptist originated in the 12th Century, right after the fourth crusade. During this time, medieval churches rushed to get their hands on relics of saints. One popular relic was the head of John the Baptists. Once the Amiens Church claimed to have found the skull of John in 1204, popularity of John the Baptists skyrocketed. The skull had a wound above its right eye (Reed 24). The Church stated the wound was from Herodias stabbing John’s skull after his decapitation (28). This story inspired...

...1.) Analysis of all characters Belle: A bookish young woman who falls in love with the Beast and finds the kind-hearted human inside him. She is beautiful, deep, intelligent and loves to read. Belle at times can also be stubborn but she is not afraid to speak her mind. She usually wears a blue outfit along with a blue ribbon in her hair. She is"unaware" of her own beauty and made her "a little odd”. Beast: A cold-hearted prince transformed into a beast as punishment for his selfishness, but later warms, with the help of Belle, and ends up being transformed back into a handsome prince as a reward. He was once a selfish, greedy prince because a poor young beggar asked him for shelter for the night, and he refused. The beggar was actually an enchantress and turning him into a monster. After, Beast fell in love with belle and became a good man for he refused to kill Gaston and didn't want to stoop to his level. Gaston: A highly egotistical hunter who vies for Belle's hand in marriage and is determined not to let anyone else win her heart, even if it means killing her true love. He is a big line-ups of good-looking men with deep voices". Gaston is the main villain in the “Beauty and the Beast” movie. He is a sexist, chauvinistic hunter who wants to marry Belle just so he can brag about it and to give him sons that he can mold at his will. Belle sees him as nothing more than a rude, selfish, chauvinist, barbarian-brained lunkhead and sexist man who is unworthy of her time. Lumiere:...

...A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man Context James Joyce was born on February 2, 1882, in the town of Rathgar, near Dublin, Ireland. He was the oldest of ten children born to a well-meaning but financially inept father and a solemn, pious mother. Joyce's parents managed to scrape together enough money to send their talented son to the Clongowes Wood College, a prestigious boarding school, and then to Belvedere College, where Joyce excelled as an actor and writer. Later, he attended University College in Dublin, where he became increasingly committed to language and literature as a champion of Modernism. In 1902, Joyce left the university and moved to Paris, but briefly returned to Ireland in 1903 upon the death of his mother. Shortly after his mother's death, Joyce began work on the story that would later become A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Published in serial form in 1914–1915, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Mandraws on many details from Joyce's early life. The novel's protagonist, Stephen Dedalus, is in many ways Joyce's fictional double—Joyce had even published stories under the pseudonym "Stephen Daedalus" before writing the novel. Like Joyce himself, Stephen is the son of an impoverished father and a highly devout Catholic mother. Also like Joyce, he attends Clongowes Wood, Belvedere, and University Colleges, struggling with questions of faith and nationality before leaving Ireland to make his...

...been popular since motion pictures first entered the media world. Scholars have speculated why these movies remain appealing to viewers and have argued for several reasons. These movies might foster hope about real-life romance (Galician, 2004), or demonstrate that that there are no limits to how love may manifest itself (Harvey, 1998). Despite this speculation, few studies have systematically investigated the content of these movies or the effects they may have on viewers. The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate that potential. In particular, I conducted two studies that explored the nature of romantic ideals in romantic comedy films and their influence on viewer endorsement of romantic beliefs. The first study was a content analysis of the themes or romantic ideals embedded in romantic comedies. The second study was a survey designed to explore whether exposure to such films encourages the learning of romantic ideals among young people. The theories of uses and gratifications, social cognitive, and cultivation served to inform this project. I first analyzed the content of over 50 top-grossing films from the romantic comedy genre. This process involved identifying the type, nature, and context of romantic ideal expressions that characters in these films make...

...Over the years I have developed a distaste for the spectacle of joie de vivre, the knack of knowing how to live. Not that I disapprove of all hearty enjoyment of life. A flushed sense of happiness can overtake a person anywhere, and one is no more to blame for it than the Asiatic flu or a sudden benevolent change in the weather (which is often joy's immediate cause). No, what rankles me is the stylization of this private condition into a bullying social ritual. The French, who have elevated the picnic to their highest civilized rite, are probably most responsible for promoting this smugly upbeat, flaunting style. It took the French genius for formalizing the informal to bring sticky sacramental sanctity to the baguette, wine and cheese. A pure image of sleeveless joie de vivre Sundays can also be found in Renoir's paintings. Weekend satyrs dance and wink; leisure takes on a bohemian stripe. A decent writer, Henry Miller, caught the French malady and ran back to tell us of pissoirs in the Paris streets (why this should have impressed him so, I've never figured out). But if you want a double dose of joie de vivre, you need to consult a later, hence more stylized version of the French myth of pagan happiness: those Family of Man photographs of endlessly kissing lovers, snapped by Doisneau and Boubat, not to mention Cartier-Bresson's icon of the proud tyke carrying bottles of wine. If CartierBresson and his disciples are excellent photographers for all that, it is...
