What is Suicide? ”Suicide” is difficult to define. This is because it is a value-laden term. Whenever we apply the label of “suicide” to an individual’s death, we typically presuppose a number of significant moral issues. To see the problem, let’s posit a definition: Suicide: Is the intentional and voluntary taking of one’s own life. At first glance, this is a simple and appealing definition. It seems to capture the core phenomenon of self-killing pretty succinctly. There are, however, all sorts of cases that would test the limits of this definition. Consider the “voluntariness” requirement. Many people may take their lives under conditions of coercion, duress or necessity. Does that mean they don’t commit suicide? Take the example of Hitler. He killed himself in order to avoid the humiliation of execution. Was his decision voluntary? What of the Japanese Samurai, who had a form of ritual self-killing (known asseppuka or hari-kari) that they used to “die with honor” rather than fall into the hands of their enemies? Or the soldier who throws himself on a grenade in order to save his comrades? I suspect we would say that each of these counts as an example of “suicide”, but depending on how we understand the voluntariness condition; they may not meet...

I could not begin to comprehend Metaphysics, Ethics Epistemology etc. if it was not for this course. This may sound ignorant but I had never really given any thought to my worldview. If asked what I believed about something I would give my belief and that was that. What exactly is a worldview? A worldview is what it sounds like. It is the way one may see the world or as Nash puts it in his book Life’s Ultimate Questions “the sum total of a person’s answers to the most important questions in life(392).” Everyone has a worldview whether we realize it or not. How does one get their worldview? Our education, our upbringing, the culture we live in, the books we read, the media and movies we watch, all can help shape our worldview. Nash says, “Worldviews contain at least five clusters of beliefs, namely, beliefs about God, metaphysics (ultimate reality), epistemology (knowledge), ethics and human nature (14).” Using these five sections I will share my worldview. In general my worldview is a Christian one. I believe that there is one God who exists in three forms who created the Heavens and the earth. ...It is hard to imagine that there is a book which has been described as “A thumping good detective-ghost-horror-whodunit-time travel-romantic-musical-comedy-epic” which, beneath its comedic exterior, contains some very relevant social commentary. But this is exactly what Douglas Adams created when he wrote Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is a science fiction comedy novel written by Douglas Adams, the author of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. The plot is based around the murder of Richard Macduff’s employer, Gordon Way, and the associated events that come along with the investigation. Although it’s set up with a serious event marking the start of the plot, the book is anything but serious. The detective hired by Richard to investigate the murder is Dirk Gently, a self-styled holistic detective, who solves mysteries based on “the fundamental interconnectedness of all things” (p. 132). He claims to “solve the whole crime (and) find the whole person” (p. 127). His approach to detective work gives the book a very jumbled plot, with many seemingly irrelevant occurrences happening along the way. Despite all this, Dirk , however strange he may seem, is a very good detective, and all the seemingly unrelated parts come together to form a conclusion involving time travel, a spaceship, ghosts, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the romantic era poet.
