...What Is The Significance Of The Title Of The Novel ‘Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry’? Mildred .D. Taylor wrote ‘Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry’ in the 1970’s but she set the book in the 1930’s during the great depression in Mississippi. During this time segregation was the norm and violence towards non- white races was rife. This segregation was due to the American civil war between the north and south of the country. The title of the book comes from the Negro spiritual song sung back in slavery times to keep the morale of the slaves high. We hear Mr Morrison singing this in chapter 11 when he is on watch for the nightmen and the Wallaces. The lyrics say “whip in hand to beat me down but I aint gonna let him turn me round” this links to the theme of racial prejudice in the slavery times. This shows that the man is not just going to roll over and give up, but instead fight for his freedom. The phrase “ beat me down” also suggests that maybe the white man is not only beating him physically but mentally as well, putting the black man in his ‘place’. Another more recent act of defiance is when mama refuses to teach the racist white syllabus because she thinks it is not completely truthful and decides to teach her own version. One day, Harlan Granger, Kaleb Wallace, and another member of the school board come to Mama's class. They find how she has altered the textbooks to hide the word "negri" and they find her teaching "inappropriate" things. She is fired. This act of defiance towards...

...The story begins in the early morning of 4th August 2026. It goes on to describe the different activities that usually go on in the house from morning to evening. There is clear specification of the duties that the house undertakes during this period. These activities include waking the occupants, making breakfast, cleaning and maintaining both the house and the compound among other duties. It is however important to note that the occupants of the house are not present throughout the story. It is also implied that these occupants had not been around for a long time and would not be coming back anytime soon. On the evening of 4th August 2026, the house is accidentally set on fire and burns to the ground by the next morning. The different machines try to clean up the mess but they are defeated by the raging fire which eventually leads to the destruction of everything inside the house, except for one wall. The setting of the story is distinctly in the distant future. One of the main indicators of that is the date of the day on which the story is told. The story is characterized by high levels of mechanization where the stove cooks breakfast, little mice are responsible for cleaning and there is a timer that announces the time and activity of what should be happening according to the daily schedule. Everything in the house is...

...The author of ‘The book thief’, Markus Zusak and the novel ‘Night’ by Elie Wiesel explore the theme of death. They explore the theme of death in different ways but explore it at the same time in history with Nazi Germany. The novel ‘Night’ is looking from a Jews perspective of a survivor of the holocaust. In ‘The book thief’ the narrator is Death and he follows Liesel and her German family. Both explore the theme of death, with the death of he bother being used as a turning point in ‘the book thief’ for Liesel. Death in ‘Night’ is explored where it became normal to see dead bodies but all it shows the limit people go to avoid death. Death becomes a reality and a normal occurrence in Night with thousands of dying daily in Auschwitz. The theme of death is first introduced in the beginning of ‘The book thief’ as Death narrates the story. The first turning point for Liesel, the German girl that Death follows, starts with her brother dying where she steals a book. This first book will be the start of many that she steals. “With one eye open, one still in a dream, the book thief-also known as Liesel Meminger-could see without question that her younger brother, Werner, was...

...All Summer in a Day Children grow up not knowing how the world works. They don’t understand why people are different from each other, and sometimes they react to differences with jealousy or cruelty. In All Summer in a Day, by Ray Bradbury, the children are jealous and even angry with Margot because she has had experiences that they have not, and she suffers unfairly as a result. You could write a literary analysis about the Figurative Language in this story: The children pressed together LIKE so many roses, so many weeds intermixed. Simile They were remembering gold or a yellow crayon or a coin large enough to build the world with. Metaphor They always awoke to the tatting drum, the endless snaking of clear bead necklaces upon the roof. Metaphor They turned on themselves, like a feverish wheel, all fumbling spokes. Simile She was an old photograph dusted from an album, whitened away and if she spoke at all her voice would be a ghosts. Metaphor It’s like a penny. Simile The great jungle that covered Venus, that grew and never stopped growing, tumultuously, even as you watched it. It was a nest of octopi, clustering up great arms of fleshlike week, wavering, flowering in this brief spring. Metaphor You could write an essay about what Ray Bradbury is saying about mob mentality in "All Summer and a Day". "All Summer in a Day" shows Margot, the quiet, invisible outcast of the class, being singled out by the rest of her classmates, after telling...

...Gothic Literature Gothic fiction is a genre of literature that combines elements of both horror and romance. As a genre, it is generally believed to have been invented by the English author Horace Walpole, with his 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto. The effect of Gothic fiction feeds on a pleasing sort of terror, an extension of Romantic literary pleasures that were relatively new at the time of Walpole's novel. Melodrama and parody (including self-parody) were other long-standing features of the Gothic initiated by Walpole. Gothic literature is intimately associated with the Gothic Revival architecture of the same era. In a way similar to the gothic revivalists' rejection of the clarity and rationalism of the neoclassical style of the Enlightened Establishment, the literary Gothic embodies an appreciation of the joys of extreme emotion, the thrills of fearfulness and awe inherent in the sublime, and a quest for atmosphere. The ruins of gothic buildings gave rise to multiple linked emotions by representing the inevitable decay and collapse of human creations—thus the urge to add fake ruins as eye catchers in English landscape parks. English Gothic writers often associated medieval buildings with what they saw as a dark and terrifying period, characterized by harsh laws enforced by torture, and with mysterious, fantastic, and superstitious rituals. In literature such Anti-Catholicism had a European dimension featuring Roman Catholic excesses such as the Inquisition (in southern...

...The year is 1959, a pivotal moment in American cultural history, when rock and roll was giving birth to the Sexual Revolution and everything in America culture was about to be turned upside down. Record companies were releasing more than a hundred singles every week and the country was about to explode. Grease, generally considered a trivial little musical about The Fabulous Fifties, is really the story of America’s tumultuous crossing over from the 50s to the 60s, throwing over repression and tradition for freedom and adventure (and a generous helping of cultural chaos), a time when the styles and culture of the disengaged and disenfranchised became overpowering symbols of teenage power and autonomy. Originally a rowdy, dangerous, over-sexed, and insightful piece of alternative theatre, Grease was inspired by the rule-busting success of Hair and shows like it, rejecting the trappings of other Broadway musicals for a more authentic, more visceral, more radical theatre experience that revealed great cultural truths about America. An experience largely forgotten by most productions of the show today. Like Hair before it and The Rocky Horror Show which would come a year later, Grease is a show about repression versus freedom in American sexuality, about the clumsy, tentative, but clearly emerging sexual freedom of the late 1950s, seen through the lens of the middle of the Sexual Revolution in the 1970s. It’s about the near carnal passion 1950s teenagers felt for their rock...

...CONTEXT Growing up, Suzanne Collins was a military brat. Her father was a career airman in the United States Air Force, as a result, Collins and her siblings—two older sisters and an older brother—moved around frequently, spending time in numerous locations in the eastern United States as well as in Europe. The military, in fact, played a leading role in the family’s history. Collins’s grandfather had served in World War I, her uncle served in World War II, and the year Collins turned six, her father left to serve his own tour in the Vietnam War. War, consequently, was a part of life for Collins, something very real and not just an abstract idea. While her father was gone, she would sometimes see video footage of the war zone on the news, and she recognized that her father was there fighting. Though her father returned after a year, Collins’s connection to war didn’t end. In addition to being a soldier, Collins’s father was also a military historian and a doctor of political science. That knowledge and experiences serving in the Air Force and fighting in Vietnam had a profound effect on his relationships with his children, and he made sure they learned what they could about war. While other girls’ fathers were telling them fairytales, Collins’s father educated her about military history. When the family was moved to Brussels, Belgium, for instance, her father educated her about the region’s violent history and took her on tours of the country’s historic battlefields. Eventually...

...[No Subject] Me to Fatema SunelSent Nowadays, people are getting more & more involved in Music & for them, it has become a part of their daily life. Their mind has become so saddled with tension, & tempo of life is so fast that they seem to accept high blood pressure & nervous breakdown as the unavoidable side effects of modern civilization. It is a pity that they do not pause to think the adverse effects of music on their physical & mental health. I have endeavored to present in this booklet the scientific & spiritual points of views on music & dance etc. These observations have been quoted from various books of Persian, Urdu & English languages. I am very grateful to Maulana Seyyid Saeed Akhtar Rizvi, the Chief Missionary of the Bilal Muslim Mission of Tanzania for editing & scrutinizing this effort of mine. I hope this booklet will help the readers in understanding the philosophy of the rule of Islam which forbids music. A.H. Sherriff 1/5/1983 W H A T IS M U S I C ? Music, according to the New National Dictionary, means "Art of combining sounds or sequences of notes into harmonious patterns pleasing to the ear & satisfying to the emotions; melody" According to the Great Encyclopedic Dictionary, this combining of sounds is "for reproduction by the voice or various kinds of musical instruments in rhythmic, melodious & harmonious form so as to express thought or feeling & affect the emotion;" & the word is also used for the "sound so produced," & for 'written...

...In Other Words This book addresses the need for a systematic approach to the training of translators and provides an explicit syllabus which reflects some of the main intricacies involved in rendering a text from one language into another. It explores the relevance of some of the key areas of modern linguistic theory and illustrates how an understanding of these key areas can guide and inform at least some of the decisions that translators have to make. It draws on insights from current research in such areas as lexical studies, text linguistics and pragmatics to maintain a constant link between language, translation, and the social and cultural environment in which both language and translation operate. In Other Words examines various areas of language, ranging from the meaning of single words and expressions to grammatical categories and cultural contexts. Firmly grounded in modern linguistic theory, the book starts at a simple level and grows in complexity by widening its focus gradually. The author explains with clarity and precision the concepts and theoretical positions explored within each chapter and relates these to authentic examples of translated texts in a variety of languages, although a knowledge of English is all that is required to understand the examples presented. Each chapter ends with a series of practical exercises which provide the translator with an opportunity to test the relevance of the issues discussed. This combination of theoretical discussion and...
