Sometimes, there will be people who will be horrific, and try to take power from you, because they thrive on it. To prove my theme to be true, I quote Mari Mancusi’s novel, Gamer Girl. It states, “I could feel the stares as soon as we reached the school entrance and heard the snickers. Grandma stared at a boy. Billy? Billy Henderson is that you? She cried, Hi Mrs. Miller. He mumbled. So, good to see you Billy, She said, last time I saw you, you were four feet tall and still wetting the bed”(Mancusi 16). This states that she feels like she is in a horror movie and can't get out. Also, her Grandma knows Billy, the kid who is determined to make Maddy's life a living nightmare, just because her Grandma embarrassed him, and that makes her an easy

Romulus My Father

...These different aspects of belong are reflected in a variety of texts; “Romulus My Father” by Raimond Gaita explores a sense of familial belonging and how it shapes who we are, “The Comic” by Leunig explores the troubles of being accepted and “fitting” in. Finally, the feature article, “Compulsive Gamers ‘not addicts’” by Pady Maguire explores the need for gamers to belong to a community. In “Romulus My Father” the most profound sense of belonging exists with the narrator himself. The narrator delivers his observations in a reflective and thoughtful tone. The high modality of verb choice suggests a pleasant nostalgia about events in the book. Particularly his recollections of his father, notions such as, “I loved him too deeply… no quarrel could estrange us” displays the sense of belonging \ he feels with his father. This is evident even after Christina dies. He observed, “We came together as son and husband with the woman whose remains lay beneath us”. Raimond’s aspect of belonging is that of family and culture. Juxtaposed against Raimond’s belonging is the suffering of Christina in her displacement. For the mother her inability to belong is described by Raimond as, “a troubled city girl, she could not settle…. in a landscape that highlighted her isolation”. Raimond’s melancholy tone conveys how Christine could not fit into the community and in Australia. As a result her isolation and alienation lead her to betray the institution of family juxtaposed by “I felt awkward with her...

Nintendo Ds – Marketing Strategy

...Court Rye Market Research Nintendo DS – Marketing Strategy Problem/Situation Description: Ten years ago Nintendo dominated both the console and handheld gaming industry. Today the gaming industry has grown so much that it is competing directly with the movie industry! Growth in this industry is occurring in the demographic of 18-34 year olds. Nintendo is primarily focused on 5-17 year old gamers with its first party software, especially in the handheld gaming market. As the industry expands Nintendo is struggling to retain market share percentages as their primary market of young male gamers is already saturated. Marketing Objectives: Increase Nintendo’s market share and boost sales without losing touch with the current market of 5-17 year old males. Target Audience: The suggested target audience for Nintendo to expand towards is 5-17 year old females. Budget: The three tools suggested for reaching the target consumer most effectively are TV commercials, movie theater pre-show trailers, and the actual casing and packaging of the product. A high quality 30 second commercial is estimated to cost $100,000 to $350,000 dollars. Movie trailer slides are estimated to start at $1500+ for a four week period. Casing and packaging redesign costs are unknown but estimated to be relatively small when spread over the number of units being produced. Total costs for the Nintendogs Pink DS promotion would be nearly $30 Million dollars over the span of four months. Strategy:...

The "M" Game Effect

...passed due to its evolving nature. Video games are played by people all over the world ranging from young children to even senior citizens. Given the audiences that have been amassed, the different types of video games are regulated into ratings due to their content material by an organization that specializes in this area for gaming. Now imagine the idea where video games intended for a mature audience fell into the hands of younger children. Video games with themes of constant violence or that of which rewards the players for taking part in acts of violence. This is where most of the controversies regarding video games fall upon, raising the suspicion of parents and scientists alike. Since many of the negative aspects of video games are put in the control of children at such a young age, do kids suffer as a result of graphic contents in video games? Such incidents could possibly play a role in the emotional, behavioral, and intellectual aspect of kids who are exposed to contents like the violence and suggestive themes within the video games that are played. It has been believed by many supporters that playing violent video games that involves shootings and killings would lead children into committing similar acts. Olson, an expert on the effects of electronic media on kids, disproved this hypothesis by giving an example that “Seung Hui Cho did not play video games” even though he had committed a massive school shooting back in 2007 at Virginia Tech (190). What it does show...

...country. A larger gap is shown between the public’s perception of Video games and what research shows. Some people assume that the availability of video games has led to a pandemic in youth violence. According to federal crime statistics “the rate of juvenile violent crimes in the United States is at a 30 year low”. (Henry Jenkins ) “Researchers have discovered that people who are serving time for violent crimes typically consume less media before committing their crime than the average person in the general population”. (Henry Jenkins ) One thing that is true, Young offenders who have committed school shooting’s here in America have been avid video game players. Young people are the ones who are gamers over the adults. “Statistics show that 90 percent of boys and 40 percent of girls play video games”. (Theesa.com) The overwhelming majority of the youth who play video games do not commit any anti –social acts. According to a report by the U.S Surgeon General that was released in 2001. The report “states that the strongest risk factors for schools shootings are centered on mental stability of that youth offender and it’s also based on the quality of their home life not exposure to video games”.( Henry Jenkins) The panic over video games causing violence is doubly harmful to youth. This panicking has led the authorities to be more suspicious and hostile towards kids who feel cut off from the system. This Panicking has also misdirected energy away from the actual causes of youth...

Are Video Games Educational

...Are Video Games Educational? (based on 27 ratings) By Jayel Gibson Video games. While they may seem like the bane of every parent's existence, they don't have to be—many of them offer unique learning features. And with increased requirements in schools placing unprecedented demands on children and parents, it may be time to start thinking about video games as teaching tools. The learning component of gaming can be optimized with parent involvement. That means understanding what makes a game both fun and educational. What makes a game fun? * Challenge and strategy – this is the core of the game. It includes the objective, the play and the scoring. The game should provide a challenge for its players and allow them to use different strategies to gain a level or win. This is what determines the age group or skill level. * Element of surprise – this is the variation of the game. The element of surprise must be built into the game to provide laughter, excitement, regret or risk. * Replay ability – this is the ability to play the game over and over with different outcomes each time. This is measured by the ‘boring’ factor. If the child gets bored fast, the game lacks replay ability. What makes a game educational? * New information – this is the educational information provided. It may be text or graphics, and is normally unknown by the age group or skill level for which the game is made. * Memorization – this is the part of the game that rewards good memory...

Retrieved from http://psychcentral.com/news/2011/08/11/medias-growing-sexualization-of-women/28539.html In this article, Rick Nauert, a senior news editor for Psych Central, explains the observations he and his colleagues had made while analyzing Rolling Stone Magazine’s covers and contents from the 1960’s to relatively recent. They created their own “Scale of Sexualization” where they different covers were awarded points for the different elements deemed sexually charged. Their findings were that although men were increasingly being sexualized throughout the cover timeline, overall, women were experiencing more, 10x more to be exact. Nauert concluded that the problems created by the over sexualization allow for more opportunities of violence towards women because women have been given the status of sexual object and submissive. Sexual harassment in the workplace and in the community has also elevated. It also gives unrealistic expectations for females and therefore women and men are open for disappointment. Rolling Stone was chosen as it is a founded publication that analyzes music, politics, film and top news stories. Clymer, C. (2013). ‘Woman’ Should Not Be Another Word For Sex. Huffington Post. ...The Benefits of Playing Video Games Isabela Granic, Adam Lobel, and Rutger C. M. E. Engels Radboud University Nijmegen Video games are a ubiquitous part of almost all children’s and adolescents’ lives, with 97% playing for at least one hour per day in the United States. The vast majority of research by psychologists on the effects of “gaming” has been on its negative impact: the potential harm related to violence, addiction, and depression. We recognize the value of that research; however, we argue that a more balanced perspective is needed, one that considers not only the possible negative effects but also the benefits of playing these games. Considering these potential benefits is important, in part, because the nature of these games has changed dramatically in the last decade, becoming increasingly complex, diverse, realistic, and social in nature. A small but significant body of research has begun to emerge, mostly in the last five years, documenting these benefits. In this article, we summarize the research on the positive effects of playing video games, focusing on four main domains: cognitive, motivational, emotional, and social. By integrating insights from developmental, positive, and social psychology, as well as media psychology, we propose some candidate mechanisms by which playing video games may foster real-world psychosocial benefits. Our aim is to provide strong enough evidence and a theoretical rationale to inspire new programs of research on the largely unexplored...

Sexism in the Video Game Industry

...Linzy Waltke Professor Andrew Forrester Discernment and Discourse 1313 5 May 2014 Sexism Sells: The Male Dominated Video Game Industry Only 4% of video game titles released in the past 10 years feature a playable female character as the leading role, and there are even fewer female protagonists on the list of the top grossing video games (ESA). This trend of male dominated storylines is evident in other forms of media as well: movies and television shows tend to be centered around men, but video games show the least diversity in protagonists and often have regressive views on women and their position in society. Women make up 20% of console video game players and 46% of computer and mobile game players in this 20 billion dollar a year industry, meaning they are contributing a large amount of profits (ESA). Despite their significant purchasing power, they are not represented equally as characters in games, and continue to be used as a plot device or sexual being to attract the male target audience. Neither are they allowed to be a compelling character with a story arc and personal growth as we see with the male protagonist. Female characters, when included, tend to be one dimensional and only valued for typically how they fit into traditional gender roles by being submissive and innocent. This narrow portrayal of women comes from the fact that the developers of video games are predominantly men. Only 11% of game designers are women and only 3% of programmers, even though...
