The idea of friendship is an important theme that has been explored and explained through countless stories and books over time. Shakespeare's Hamlet is no exceptions as the character Hamlet has unique relationships with Horatio as well as Rosencrantz and Gildenstern which dictate different types of friendships. Hamlet seems to have a genuine relationship with Horatio and trusts him while his interactions between Rosencrantz and Gildenstern show another story. He is more suspicious of them and knows that they are working for the king and queen so he isn't always honest with them and ends up turning on them. Hamlet struggles to trust people in the play and it is shown with his trust in Horatio contrasting against his distrust with Rosencrantz and Gildenstrern. Some things that are important between these two friendships are that Hamlet had know all of them for a while. Rosencrantz and Gildenstern are mentioned as old family friends in act 2 scene 2 of the play, "I entreat you both That, being of so young days brought up with him, And sith so neighbored to his youth and havior..."(lines 10-12). The king says this when he is first talking with Rosencrantz and Gildenstern. This means that Hamlet had know them for a long time and therefore would be inclined to want to trust them and believe in the friendship they'd established. In the beginning of the play Hamlet also seems to trust Horatio and also lets him know about his interaction with the dead King, Hamlet's father. Hamlet is a bit weary to tell Horatio about it but Horatio insists that he won't tell anyone and that Hamlet can trust him, "Not I my lord by heaven"(line 124 act 1 scene 5). This suggests that he had known Horatio for a while and felt that he could believe in the relationship that the two of them had even though it took a bit of convincing. His friendships with these men were something that he relied on heavily in the film because he couldn't trust his Uncle or Mother after learning that his father, the king, had been killed by the Uncle and the Mother has recently married. Hamlet was unfortunately unable to count of Rosencrantz or Gildenstern because they were under the Uncle and Mothers influence. The new king and queen tried to use Rosencrantz and Gildenstern to find out why Hamlet had started acting insane. Once Hamlet learned about this he could no longer trust them and knew that they weren't really his friends. This was solidified later on when Rosencrantz and Gildenstern traveled to england with Hamlet caring kill orders for him from the King. Hamlet discovers this and turns the table on the two before escaping. Hamlet's friendship with Rosencrantz and Gildenstern wasn't real and Hamlet had to come to terms with that within the play. Hamlet's only true friendship was between himself and Horatio. Horatio was someone that Hamlet deeply trusted shown in how Hamlet told him about his fathers murder which was something he never told Rosencrantz and Gildenstern.
