Supply chain management (SCM): It is the management of the flow of goods. It includes the movement and storage of raw materials, work-in-process inventory, and finished goods from point of origin to point of consumption. Interconnected or interlinked networks, channels and node businesses are involved in the provision of products and services required by end customers in a supply chain. Supply chain management has been defined as the "design, planning, execution, control, and monitoring of supply chain activities with the objective of creating net value, building a competitive infrastructure, leveraging worldwide logistics, synchronizing supply with demand and measuring performance globally. A supply chain, as opposed to supply chain management, is a set of organizations directly linked by one or more upstream and downstream flows of products, services, finances, or information from a source to a customer. Supply chain management is the management of such a chain.
Goal of supply Chain: The primary objective of supply chain management is to fulfill customer demands through the most efficient use of resources, including distribution capacity, inventory and labor. In theory, a supply chain seeks to match demand with supply and do so with the minimal inventory. Various aspects of optimizing the supply chain include liaising with suppliers to eliminate bottlenecks; sourcing strategically to strike a balance between lowest material cost and transportation, implementing JIT (Just In Time) techniques to optimize manufacturing flow; maintaining the right mix and location of factories and warehouses to serve customer markets, and using location/allocation, vehicle routing analysis, dynamic programming and, of course, traditional logistics optimization to maximize the efficiency of the distribution side.
Why is SCM difficult? : The problem turns out to be one of

Factors Influencing the Sustainability of Supply Chain

...FACTORS INFLUENCING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF SUPPLY CHAIN 1. RESEARCH AREA The importance of operations logistics and supply chain management has shown a tremendous growth in the past decade. One main area which remains underestimated and not taken care of by supply chain practitioners is sustainability management. The practice of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) is still untouched by many organizations and not fully understood by many practicing companies. So this led to increasing amount of research in this area of supply chain management. (Seuring & Muller, 2008) This paper aims to address the research questions which can able to explain the major factors influencing the sustainable process of supply chain management. On the sustainable side, it involves addressing environmental, ethical, social, economic problems. So the purpose of this paper is to give a proposed approach to effective SSCM. (Faisal, 2010) 2. RESEARCH PROBLEM Acquiring and maintaining sustainability in supply chain management has become the key problem in supply chain practices. SSCM has gained more interest by the companies and also by the researchers. (Colicchia et al, 2011) The more vital process involved is quantifying the sustainability. On considering quantifying, the key issue is considering system boundaries, i.e. analyzing the single organizational operations or the entire supply process as a whole, or considering the direct impact from internal environment or the direct impact...

...IJOPM 26,7 Supply chain management: theory, practice and future challenges 754 John Storey and Caroline Emberson The Open University Business School, Milton Keynes, UK, and Janet Godsell and Alan Harrison Cranfield School of Management, Cranfield, UK Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to critically assess current developments in the theory and practice of supply management and through such an assessment to identify barriers, possibilities and key trends. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on a three-year detailed study of six supply chains which encompassed 72 companies in Europe. The focal firms in each instance were sophisticated, blue-chip corporations operating on an international scale. Managers across at least four echelons of the supply chain were interviewed and the supply chains were traced and observed. Findings – The paper reveals that supply management is, at best, still emergent in terms of both theory and practice. Few practitioners were able – or even seriously aspired – to extend their reach across the supply chain in the manner prescribed in much modern theory. The paper identifies the range of key barriers and enablers to supply management and it concludes with an assessment of the main trends. Research limitations/implications – The research presents a number of challenges to existing thinking about supply strategy and supply chain management. It reveals the substantial gaps between theory and practice. A...

Supply Chain Management

...Supply Chain Management Concerns BUS630/Managerial Accounting 8/22/2011 Supply Chain Management Concerns In the modern business world with an increase in technology and information-based consumers, it is no wonder why there are many issues that deal directly with supply chain management. The authors of Managerial Accounting for Managers define supply chain management as, “A management approach that coordinates business processes across companies to better serve end consumers,” (Noreen, Brewer and Garrison, 2011, p. 25). More and more consumers are increasingly trending toward a mass of buyers that crave instant gratification, whether it through technology, delivery or service. Common issues in supply chain management involve stock availability, inventory purchasing and order to delivery timeframe. Other concerns focus on the next generation of business, which involve cost effective and green supply chain, outsourcing, new technology, consumer behavior and most importantly emerging economies. With different views and theories on supply chain management it has become an increasingly important role for businesses in order to deal with these major problems that have arisen in the past few decades. Supply Chain Management Jobs Along with all of these progressively escalating concerns comes the increase for demand in the supply chain management career field. Firstly supply chain management can be defined as the management of the interconnection of organisation that relate to each other through upstream linkage between the different processes that produce value in the form of product and services to the ultimate consumers.(Slack et al. 2004, p. 445). Thinking Differently About Purchasing

...York University ZHAOHUI WU Oregon State University MICHAEL E. WASSERMAN Clarkson University Kraljic is widely viewed as a driving force behind the concepts of supply management and purchasing portfolios. Kraljic proposed that supply management professionals needed to engage in a new approach, embracing globalization, technology and risk. This article marked a critical juncture for supply chain management. Almost three decades later, it is evident that the purchasing portfolio concept has been widely adopted as an effective practitioner tool and a well-accepted tenet in the supply chain management literature. However, a recently completed study yielded interesting evidence of a potential shift in supply chain management, specifically, in sustainable sourcing. We recently observed that a number of leaders in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) were not organizing purchasing portfolios in the manner suggested by Kraljic. We found organizations buying what would traditionally be leveraged commodities in a manner more appropriate for strategic suppliers. This unexpected observation suggests that the supply chain field may face another critical juncture, this time related to SSCM. This manuscript describes the observed phenomena and then, using an inductive approach, enhances the existing theory to explain what was observed. The end result is a modified sustainable purchasing portfolio model that should provide a strategic tool to help both academics and practitioners...

An Introduction to Supply Chain Management Commerce Essay

...An Introduction To Supply Chain Management Commerce Essay The term supply chain management was first coined by a U.S. industry consultant in the early 1980s. However, the concept of a supply chain in management was of great importance long before, in the early 20th century. Supply chain management is the word coined for the effective management of all the partners and the information disseminated between them. Take an example of Dell computers, Micheal Dell cant built his business just by selling the computers to the customers, but he need to see the complex problems of the customers and solve these problems through just in time manufacturing of the product, then how to minimize the wastage in the production then to evaluate what customers are doing and how they can make their production efficiently (NYT 2010), as the manufacturer cannot sell the product at the higher prices than the competitors are selling but through effective management you can actually reduce the cost, so concisely he need to be a master of supply chain management. Before supply chain management there was effective inventory control system exist but due to some pit falls like; no supply chain metrics, inadequate definition of customer service, , organizational barriers, inaccurate delivery status data, simplistic inventory stocking policies, inefficient information systems, ignoring the impact of uncertainties, and an incomplete view of the supply chain (Teigen 1997). There is a need for another system...
