Students have their own different learning styles. According to Grohol (2013), students grapple with many issues in their lives, and because of all of the competing things for their attention, it’s hard to concentrate on studying. And yet if they’re in school, they have to do at least a little studying in order to progress from year to year. The key to effective studying isn’t cramming or studying longer, but studying smarter.
Henry Tenedero in his article Learning Styles and Teacher Education mentioned the need for the teachers and pre-service teachers to focus on the learner. Since the Philippines is gearing up toward the K to 12 program, much preparation is needed.
According to Fairhurst and Fairhurst (1995), many teachers are familiar with other learning theories. One theory describes learners as auditory, visual or kinaesthetic. Howard Gardner (1983), describes learners as verbal/linguistic, logical/mathematical, spatial, musical interpersonal and intrapersonal. These theories are valuable in helping teachers recognize and respond to differences in learning styles. However, like most available learning theories, these theories focus primarily on the student’s learning process without taking into account the needs and skill of the teacher. According to Vygotsky (1978), also raised a significant point about teaching style when he argued that children’s understanding was not only developed through their interaction with the physical world but also through their active encounters with other in relation to the world.
