...Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum When I think of musical comedy, Stephen Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is the first show that comes to mind. Just three years ago, I had never heard of Forum before, until my high school choir director announced that it would be our 2008 musical. I was hesitant to audition at first, not knowing the plot or what I was getting myself into, but now I can honestly say that it was my favorite musical production ever to be a part of. Forum, a musical farce written in two acts and Sondheim’s first work on Broadway both as composer and lyricist, is “a non-stop laugh-fest in which a crafty slave (Pseudolus) struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan (Philia) for his young master (Hero), in exchange for freedom” (MTI 1). In Sondheim’s own words, “there’s not a wasted moment in Forum, and the truth and the test of it is that the play is just as funny when performed by a group of high school students as it is when it is performed on Broadway. It is never not funny. The reason is, it is based on situations so solid that you cannot not laugh” (Gordon 25). A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a collaboration between American librettist Burt Shevelove, playwright Larry Gelbart, and musical theater extraordinaire, Stephen Sondheim. Originally, Shevelove had done a version of a Roman comedy in college and thought that a professional Broadway production would be very...

...FIRST STEP TO REACH MY GOALS First step to reach my goals Fernanda Chavez English 1101 Professor McCaughan Keiser University March 4, 2010 FIRST STEP TO REACH MY GOALS First step to reach my goals The most important thing that has ever happened to me is when I got accepted to a university. Some people don’t understand how much difference a good education makes. It opens your eyes to a wider world. It helps you understand things you never understood before. It gives you opportunities for a better life that you would never have had without the education. But education isn’t enough how many PhD degree you get , your heart I till no different than anyone else’s. We’re all still basically selfish, out for what we can get, focused on taking care of just us, and making the best life for ourselves we can. The reason why education doesn’t solve everything is because we have a heart problem, not a head problem. I can have all the education I want, but if my heart is not a good, one I will never be successful in life. So get another degree. Fill your head with more knowledge, but remember to also fill your heart. My major is Business Administration and I dream of having my own business one day, a business where I can make other people feel better about them self, make them feel like they are in place where at that moment nothing matters but their happiness, where problems and worries are outside not inside. Everything started when I was little, my family has hotels in...

...Purpose of Section: To help the believer understand the importance and process of immediate follow-up. Once a person has accepted Christ, congratulate them! This is the greatest decision they will ever make! The old has passed away, and they have become a new creation in Christ! Immediate follow-up begins at this point. Review the four areas that the believer needs to practice as his or her life begins. Use W.A.L.K.: W is for Who needs to know, A is for Assurance of Salvation, L is for Learn the Bible, and K is for Kneel in Prayer. “Follow-up proce¬dures are not complete until the convert has been taught to study God’s Word, to pray, to live the Christian life, and to walk with Christ.” —D. James Kennedy, Evangelism Explosion As you leave the person make sure that they have a Bible and information about your church. Leave them the tract and other tracts. Encourage them to share it with someone they know who needs Jesus. Pray with them and for them. • Every effort should be made to assimilate the new believer into the life and ministry of the church. Continue weekly contact with the new believer, providing him or her with Bible study materials, such as Beginning Steps, or other resources for new believers. • Enroll the person in your Sunday School/small group ministry. • Visit with the person in his or her home. • Be sensitive to the spiritual needs of other family members in the home and share Christ with...

...watch the second black/white part. Then we jump to dot number 4 and so on. The real chronological order would be to first see all the black/white scenes in the movie in the order we see in the movie. Afterwards we would see scene 7, then scene 6 and so on until we have seen the last scene, the scene the movie started with. Because of this structure of the movie you need to follow closely or you need to know before you watch the movie how it works or else it can be very confusing. It also demands from the viewer that he/she notices the little things that happens for example when we see Sammy Jenkins at the institution and when someone walks by and suddenly it is Lenny sitting in the chair. As a viewer you also need to know when we deal with flashbacks and when we just jumped one scene back. Through the story we kind of experience how it feels to suffer from short-term memory loss like Lenny. Because we don’t know what has happened earlier we only know what Lenny has told us and what we can see on Lenny’s pictures just like Lenny. So we don’t know any more than Lenny do, we don’t know how many John G.’s he has killed or if Teddy is the one that raped and killed his wife all we know is what Lenny knows. Lenny Lenny’s disorder definitely creates a problem for Lenny, his identity...

...events that happen that Abigail had something to do with, with each event Abigail always has a different story from what actually happens and convinces people that her story is the truth. One event that happens that displays this would be when Abigail was in the woods with the girls dancing and took it to the next level by drinking blood and taking off her clothing. Before the questioning of what happen in the woods Abigail states “Shut up! All of you. We danced. That is all, and mark this, if anyone breathe a word or the edge of a word about the other things, I will come to you in the black of some terrible night, and I will bring with me a pointy reckoning that will shudder you! And you know I can do it. I saw Indians smash my dear parents' heads on the pillow next to mine. And I have seen some reddish work done at night. And I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!” When it came down to the questioning of what happened...

...Oh Sweet Marilyn, What has happened? Narveson: Josh, would you mind introducing me to Marilyn’s parents? Josh: Not a problem Jan! Right this way. Narveson: I would like to have a word with them regarding the recent loss of their daughter. Josh: Good evening you guys, I would like to introduce to you my newest friend Jan Narveson. Narveson: (Reaches out his hand) I am terribly sorry for your loss. I heard nothing but good things about your daughter. Marilyn’s Father: Hey, uh thank you sir. It’s been tough Marilyn’s Mother: (Continues to sob) Marilyn’s Father: We can’t believe our innocent little girl was taken from us. Do you know Barton, the pilot? Marilyn’s Mother: That man Barton is a monster! He killed our daughter and didn’t do anything to avoid it. Just simply executed our daughter to save some lives? It is outrageous. Josh: Let me grab you guys some drinks.. Narveson: Yes I know Barton; do you really think Barton didn’t do all he could for your daughter? I am kind of torn between the middle. Barton had two choices in what he ought to do in this dreadful situation. Marilyn’s Parents: Well he chose the wrong one!! Narveson: Here’s how I see it, Barton had two choices: Either your “innocent” Marilyn dies or all eight people die; Marilyn, Barton and six men. To whom are all “innocent”. Marilyn’s Mother: I’m glad we can agree that Marilyn was innocent. All she did was stow away on the ship to see her brother. This should never have become a problem; its...

...P1: What happened in the role play? Intro: I am going to be explaining about what happened in the role play? We had a role play, where there was a case about Jackie Jones who was accused of dangerously driving contrary to Section 2 of the Road Traffic Act. The classroom was arranged into a Crown Court. There was one judge, one witness, one clerk, couple of students were members of the jury and some were members of the other juries, there were one usher, there were two lawyers, one lawyer was a defendant lawyer while the other lawyer was the prosecution lawyer, there were press and public watching finally there was a defendant who was the criminal. In this role I was actively a criminal and this is what I fulfilled. When the classroom was organised into a Crown Court, I took my seat and sat at the back of the court room as was instructed by the usher. I kept completely silent for the time being, until it was my turn to go to the witness box and give my statement. The minute the usher stood up and removed me from my seat and took me over to the witness box, this is the exact statement I gave. Statement I gave while I was inside the witness box: “I took delivery of my new Mazda sports car, from the garage Brookside Mazda and I was driving alongside Hillside Road. I live at 32 Able Close and I got stuck in the usual traffic jam. I am very familiar with the road as I drive it every day If I get stuck in traffic when I get close to my turning I have a habit of ...

...Chapter I “How are you feeling now? Do you still ‘see’ those weird things?” “I am fine; for now. I just really hope that it’s working as intended to be.” “That’s good, you’ll be up and well again in no time. Don’t worry - you’ll get used to those implants soon.” “I really do hope so…” The pale girl was still uneasy despite what the physician said, probably just because she was still recovering from her recent operation. It was just like what most patients that have undergone a major one would feel. Everything looked mundane and seemed in order. The room’stemperature regulated, spacious enough, and everything was tidied and regularly checked by sanitary personnel; the flowers on the vase on top of the table beside her bed was frequently changed by her visitors. However, there was something that kept bothering her periodically during her whole stay in the hospital while recovering. She could not describe nor explain it, but there is definitely something bothering her. “Well I’ll be going now Ms. Lilde. Make sure you call any of the nurses immediately if ever something happens again.” “Will do sir.” “I’ll see you again later for your next check-up.” The physician left the room after checking the condition of the girl’s eyes. She was still not allowed to remove the bandages and open her eyes yet but seeing that she’s in a steady rate of recovery, it would just be a short amount of time now before she could finally see the light again. Or so they...

...The Great New York statesman said, “Memory is the treasury and guardian of all things.” To psychologists it is an indication that learning has happened over a period of time and our ability to store it and recall it. Memory and memory loss has always interested me, ever since I was young, so I will be talking about different aspects of our ability to remember. When I was younger, it always bothered me that I couldn’t remember exactly what had happened in my life while I was a baby. I have one memory of chasing my grandma around in the hospital while my sister was being born, but I’m not even sure if that’s legitimate. I remember seeing an old family video of the supposed memory, so I am not sure if I really remember the actual event or if I just remember the video. Some other things in my childhood have led me to an interest in memory. While in high school I experimented with different drugs, such as marijuana and LSD. I certainly not proud of this but it has led me to be thankful that I never got too wrapped up into drugs. I believe that my memory has not suffered from the minimal use but I have close friends that have obviously suffered memory loss due to drug use. There are other things having to do with memory loss that have impacted me and left me to really appreciate my own health. The first time I met my girlfriend’s parents I went to a family reunion with them in Indianapolis, Indiana. We stayed with her aunt and uncle. While there I was never able to...

...will this affect my family, and will I change? Who would do this to a fourteen year old girl, I thought to myself, still lying in the ditch trying to wrap my mind around the situation. Then that’s when I told myself, “Shena, you have to get up and you have to muster up enough strength to run and run until you can find help.” I slowly tried to get up; however, every time I did I felt pain from every angle of my body. This only reminded me of the horrible things that just happened to me. I keep replaying this incident in my mind, him pushing me from behind as I was walking my bike down the steep hill. He then drugged me into the ditch behind the school, near the playground. I could hear myself scuffling, screaming and pleading for help, while he is telling me, “to shut up or I will kill you.” At that point I felt like I had to fight for my life. Therefore, I fought hard slapping him, punching him, kicking him, and biting him. I did everything I could to get him to stop and to leave me alone, but nothing worked. The next thing I knew, I felt pain between my legs from him pushing deeper inside of me and that is when I realized I was being violated. I fought some more trying my best to break free, but all this did was make him mad and it just got worse. I could feel nothing but pain from this point on. I felt pain through my whole body. From every hit, push, and thrust I could smell nothing but his sweat and my blood. I started to cry, thinking if I cried harder he would...

...Well Doc, I don’t quite know what to do. I haven’t been able to sleep, and when I do get the privilege of sleep it only lasts for a few hours before I wake up due to a dramatic nightmare. So many bad things had happened on that island, so many bad things that I cannot get out of my mind. No matter how much I try to forget about it I just keep reliving what had gone on. I need your help; I don’t know how long I can go on like this. I learned a lot about myself and others, sadly I don’t know if I like it. When the plane crashed on the island I thought I was with the most able bodied kids to help all of us survive. We were all from a higher end academy and had vast knowledge in miscellaneous subjects. Also, we were probably the most mature kids for are age, coming from the U.K of course. Yet, I was wretchedly wrong. One thing I found out about those kids is that naturally humans are savages. Another boy on the island, Simon, was viciously murdered because we were all dancing and in the moment and acting wild. Looking back on this event I don’t remember much of what went on except the fact that we killed an innocent boy just because we were dancing and having fun. That was not the only time I saw savagery. It happened when Jack and his hunters killed the sow. They didn’t just kill a pig for food, the vindictively and ruthlessly murdered a pig. The kill of the pig seemed as if to give them a high. The hunters were in awe of the fact that they could dominate another...

...contained, we as well realize that Oedipus is completely oblivious to all these facts and completely unaccepting of the mere concept of things such as this being remotely conceivable. In this section of Part I in Oedipus the King, Sophocles gave the audience/readers some major information towards the plot and how the rest of the play will proceed. One of the biggest revelations that occurs in this section is when the shepherd who was revealed to be the only survivor of the slaughter of the crossroads refuses to go anywhere the city or especially near Oedipus and specifically asks Jocasta if he can be sent to the fields and never see that place ever again. Jocosta stated that the shepherd, “...came home again and saw you king and Laius was dead, he came to me and touched my hand and begged that I should send him to the fields to be my shepherd and so he might see the city as far off as he might. So I sent him away. He was an honest man, as slaves go, and was worthy of far more than what he asked of me.” The shepherd knew that he was the murderer and did not want to have to see the man face to face so that he would potentially be exposed of the crimes. The audience as well knows about everything because it was stated that the slaughter happened at the crossroads and Oedipus states that he was arriving at the city only days after that had happened and that nobody even thought it was him because he was considered to be a ‘hero’ after he drove...

...Difference between journals and diaries:- The difference between a diary and a journal is that a diary is where you can write down what happened during the day and keep a record of stuff. A journal is to write your own personal feelings in, and things that happened, and how they happened. A diary is a report of what happened during the day—where you ate, who you met, the details that what was happened in the office, and who took whose side. It is a like a newspaper about you. A journal is completely different. A journal is about examining your life. It’s a GPS system for your spirit. Journals lead to insight, growth, and sometimes, achieving a goal. You can keep a journal in anything that feels comfortable and that’s portable–a spiral notebook, a bind book you have put together with lokta paper, index cards held together with a rubber band. You can use a computer; keep a blog, although that doesn’t work as well for me. But things on the internet are simply not private, password protected or not. To keep a journal on paper, pick a time of day to write. Keep it regularly. It makes it easier. Try that you didn’t stuck to an exercise program because then it can nailed it into schedule at a certain time. Writing works the same way. First thing in the morning, last thing at night, while eating lunch at your desk. Write with a good pen that feels good and whose color you like. In the beginning, you may have to set a time limit. Three minutes is good. Just write whatever comes...

...Ways of Remembering Things You've Forgotten Personally, when I want to remember things I have forgotten, I put myself into a relaxed light trance, "space out" for a moment and think to myself "I am remembering" until what I want to know comes back to me easily. I wanted to jump into this article with an example of what I do when I lose or forget anything. It is so simple that I would be cheating you if I did not tell you about it in the first part of the article. The relaxed light trance can be done at any time really, once you know how to do it and it is second nature. The thing is, though, you must fully let it go and let yourself forget, to remember what you wanted to remember. At first, it seems like a hard process, but as you make it a habit, it is easy to get away from the problem, relax and find the solution. The most important way to remember something you have forgotten is that removing yourself temporarily and completely from your problem until the answer comes to you. Because, being nervous never does any good or benefit to you. In fact, all you are is nervous and excited, that is it. Problems are never solved in this state, if anything they become worse in every way. The kind of light trance I am talking about is not a "Svengali stereotype" thing, anyone can do this at any time, especially when in the heat of an activity such as running or strenuous work, because you can become so in concentration that answers you want just come to you powerfully especially...
