...Sunday in the park B.) - I think that the theme in this story is a bit of violence and that’s only because of the big man and the fact that there almost were started a fight between Morton and the big man. I also think that there also is another theme and that I family. In this story you see two different kind of families and I would say that Morton and his family is a family from the upper class if you can say that, and the big man is from the more low class family that don’t care for manners or polite behaviour. - I think the ending the mom to Larry is a bit ashamed of those two because her husband almost got into a fight and her son is behaving like a spoiled kid that doesn’t know how to behave and she is very concerned what the other people in town thinks of her I think. And suddenly Morton snaps because of the big man have gotten him in a bad mood and when Larry cried all the way home Morton snaps and was just about to hit Larry so he would be quiet but the mother stops him and protected Larry, and that is a good example for a man that can’t control his temper but have to count to ten some times instead of becoming like the big man. - The mother to Larry I think is too afraid and just won’t interfere. And then just sits and think of what she would have done instead of doing it, but luckily there didn’t happen anything. Because if there did there would not be much of his husband left because the big man would probably just have broke him like a stick. The fact is that Morton...

...Think like a Man HUM/150 June 22, 2012 Linda Light Think like a Man I choose the movie Think like a Man to present and analyze because, I thought the movie was absolute hilarious. The plot of the movie is based off a novel written by Steve Harvey Act Like a Lady, Think Like a man. The film was released on April 20, 2012. The plot of the movie attracted me to the movie along with the star studded cast. Culver City played host to the movie Think Like a Man. The head of production Glenn Gainor came up with the ideal to use Culver City so they could get the local politicians and shop owners involved. The producer Glenn Gainor thought it would be a great ideal to give the community of Culver City a chance to showcase what the city had to offer. When production of the film started Screen Gems considered filming in Georgia, because it offered a richer film tax credit than California. However the company decided to film locally in part, because it was able to save money filming so close to home. By filming close to home the company cut cost on parking and transportation. The producer got the chamber of commerce on board, the chamber of commerce help enlisted the local business willing to showcase their establishments in the film this resulted in a lower film permit fee for the company and the local business received some recognition as a result of their establishment appearing in the film. The producer’s motivation to shoot in Culver City was inspired by how movies use to be...

...Feb 08, 2013 I think this short story is probably the best example in which a protagonist has a very obvious epiphany. He begins by asking about the blind man’s recently deceased wife, but doesn’t stay on that question for too long before changing the subject. By asking this question and then proceeding to quickly change the topic shows that he really doesn’t have any interest in the blind man or his life. The husband shows his true feelings towards the blind man early in the story and I get the feeling that he will not sway away from them. I feel that he hates the blind man not because of any qualities the blind man has but because he does not understand him. The husband shows this when he becomes upset that the blind man will be staying at his house and he can’t really control that. Towards the end you notice the husband tries to get to know the blind man but is so nervous about it he seems to make the situation a little awkward. It really isn’t until he realizes the blind man is figuratively like the cathedral, with a rough exterior and an unseen beauty inside that he begins to understand the blind man. The language of the text made it seem as if the husband was a little uneducated and very stubborn in his ways. My personal image of the husband is that he might have a little alcohol problem. Maybe in the time period it was ok for him to have several glasses of whiskey before and after dinner but to me it just shows that he is drinking to distract him from interacting with...

...we think a perfect man or perfect woman is. And it is difficult to live up to these ideals, often it is impossible but we are trying really hard anyway. In this story we see how it is to pursue such an ideal from a man, Hank’s point of view. We also see how destroying it can be when a person thinks the ideal is a reality and possible. Hank is a middle aged man, 52 years old, and married to Faye. He has a daughter, Julie with Faye. Julie is married with Russell, but she has just called and said that he has hit her. She specifically asks to see her father. This implies that Julie sees her father as the “Superman,” who will come and save her whenever she is in trouble. We also know that Julie and Russell lives in a house, there is a “replica of his own,” Hanks house. The fact that she is living in a house, which is an exact copy of her father’s supports this. Who builds a house there is an exact copy of one’s parents’? Most daughters and sons would build their own after what they find them most suitable. But she builds a house exactly like her father’s because she still looks up to him like a little girl would look up to her father. The house could also be a symbol of the father, in the way it surrounds her, like a hug, the comforting hug from a father you know always will be there for you. Another thing that supports this is that she did not visit her father at the hospital after his operation. “It was the nature of my operation.” Julie does not see her father like a man, but...

...Hills Like White Elephants In the short story “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway, a girl and a man discuss weather or not she should have an abortion. Because the man and the girl have different views on this subject, they argue continually throughout the story. The man is extremely selfish and is only looking out for his own well-being. “I think it’s the best thing to do. But I don’t want you to do it if you don’t really want to.” If he really wanted her to give her opinion and do what she thought was right, then he shouldn’t keep reminding her that “he thinks it’s the best thing to do”. At the end of the story the man clearly says that he doesn’t want the baby. “But I don’t want anybody but you” It’s really wrong of him to make a comment like that. He knows that his opinion will have a great effect on her decision, but he’ll say anything to get her to do things his way. The girl is consistently asking the man if everything is going to be the same between them. He tells her it will, but I don’t think he is being completely sincere. “ I love you now, you know I love you” It seems like he’s saying whatever it takes for her to agree to have an abortion. “… “I’ll love it. I love it now but I can’t think about it, you know how I get when I worry” When she asks him questions like that he doesn’t sound very reassuring, he attempts to change the subject. The girl is only concerned about her relationship with the man in the future. She is basing her decision on...

...Ernest Hemingway, “Hills Like White Elephants” In the story “Hills Like White Elephants” the author Ernest Hemingway tells a story of a couple who are at a train station dialoging about an abortion. Hemingway shows how men do not think the same way about abortions than woman do. Hemmingway also sends a message of how men are manipulative towards women. He illustrates how women seem to have a harder time overpowering a man in a relationship. First, Hemmingway shows how men do not think the same way about abortions than woman do because in the story the man says it is a perfectly “natural procedure” (Hemmingway) not thinking of all of the hardship an abortion brings to a woman. According to the criticism “ it reveals perhaps better than any other part of the story the terms of the central conflict” (Madden). The man does not think of what the woman has to go through in the procedure. The emotional state and the physically pain full procedure she has to endure, knowing that she will not be having a child that could be the start of a new family for her. Because of the way that the man does not seem to care that he is getting rid of a child with life and just wants to continue the relationship with the woman after she has to sacrifice so much with the abortion shows the lack of knowledge the man has about the feeling a woman goes through when they have an abortion. Second, Hemmingway sends a message of how men are manipulative towards woman. In the story the man continuously keeps...

...Women had to endure many negative attitudes during the Women’s Suffrage Movement. like women are insane for wanting men and women to be equal, that women are possessions and children are not theirs, and women want to be like men because they want to be treated equal. For example when a man does something like stands up for what he believes he is considered a hero. But when women do the same thing they are considered crazy or mentally insane. The quote “Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death” is a big example because when a man says this he is taken seriously but if it were a women saying this then people don't take them seriously and think they are joking or they are mentally insane. Another example is men feel like women are possessions and the...

...Clara Kattrup – The Go-Between “The Go-between” is a short story written by Ali Smith in 2009. It deals with many subjects like illegal refugees, human rights and confusion. The short story takes place both in Spain, and also in the northern Africa. It’s just around the Gibraltar. Few and simple places are a very common feature in short stories, and even though it takes place in even two different countries, it’s still relatively simple. In the short story we only meet one main character, which also is one of the short story features. In the beginning we’re being introduced to a 33 years old man, who lives in Ceuta, in Morocco, right beneath Spain. Once he tried to escape from Cameroun, his country at that time, to Europe but unfortunately it never succeeded, therefore he lives in Ceuta. He’s a go-between man – just like the title says. The meaning of a go-between is a man or woman who is a connection between something or a person who’s between something, like in a dilemma – in this case a connection between Africa and Europe. But I also think that the title symbolizes the 33-years old man who helps other people, his a boarder-crosser, but he’s also between two sides, and he has to make big decisions – a so-called go-between. The man talks about his terrible experiences, and how the illegal refugees are being treated awfully. “You know what Spain is?” is the first sentence in the story, and here we are already involved, and it makes the short story more interesting....

...is the Real Man Every boy wants to be considered a man. Some don’t care what things they must do or the way they must think to become a man. Others take it into account and think is this really what it means to be a man. Every kid or boy wonders how they will become one or how they will be considered a man. They start to receive ideas on how they will be a man from idles, social media, and at times from their parents. Kids get the idea that to be a man you have to be brave, fearless, and always be hard. This idea that, anyone who is not any of those things or is missing any little attribute will be considered any less than a man and is often referred to as a sissy or a woman. They loose respect and are looked and frowned upon. To society “men” are not supposed to show any emotion but to be fearless and brave. They must always look hard, and if anytime a man puts his guard down he will be downgraded and will be looked as less than what he is. They will loose respect and will be picked on and/or putdown by others even women. Men in society have a strict way to be and act. Not following this idea that men are stones and must be powerful and strong is shaping and controlling the youth that is growing up and gives them a false sense that they must act a certain way to be considered a man. That they must abandon the way they think and feeling and hide it all to become even noticeable by others and not be disrespected. This is a big problem because to every man, being considered...

...a Husband Every woman wants what she thinks is the perfect husband. Not every woman wants the same thing in a man. Some women want a man who is a little rough or some want a man who is college educated. A few things all women can agree upon is we all want a man who is gives attention, committed, a good provider, great listener, educated, and handy around the house. That is just to name a few things us women want in a man. When I think of what the world says a good man is to me it is like they are looking for the perfect man. To me the perfect man cannot be found every man has there flaws. You just have to find the man with the flaws that you can deal with. Every good man is not college educated; but they know how to get up and go to work to make an honest living. To find a man that is educated is a good thing that means that they are on your level and can keep up with you. Education is important to every woman when it comes to finding a husband, because you know that their values are in the right place if going to school is important to them. What woman you know wants a man that is not committed to them. If a man cannot be committed you might as well say there is not a relationship. Woman want to know that they are the only one in a man's life. Women like to know the man is not out and about doing things that he should not do. When a man is turns into a husband commitment is important. No woman wants to find out that her man was not committed totally to her cause...

...A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings Questions: 1. The title was an indicator of the story being about something fantastical because old men, or any men don’t usually have wings in real life. Marquez’s play on words and the imagery with which he writes with is very detailed. Like the way he describes something so mundane like the beach saying that it “had become a stew of mud and rotten shellfish.”(352) Right from the first paragraph of the story where we meet the old man with the enormous wings was when I realized that it was a fantasy. In the first sentence of the story, Marquez describes the rain saying “On the third day of rain they had killed so many crabs…” (351) I think the second sentence is his whimsical way of saying that it had been raining for a while. Later in the story we see more elements that indicate this story as a fantasy for instance, the woman who was turned into a spider for disobeying her parents or the “leper whose sores sprouted sunflowers.” (355) 2. The old man with the enormous wings represents an Angel; however, the family was skeptical as to whether he was even an Angel at all. The family thought that he was a pretender or maybe even the Devil and they treated him like an animal. He became a carnival act that the family made money off of. It seemed like when the family was in need, he showed up and even though they became wealthy because of the man with enormous wings, they don’t see him as someone who helped them reach that level of fortune...
